Has anyone else been checking out this mindf*ck? Trent has created an entire storyline and webgame to promote his new album "Year Zero."

The lovely people at echoingthesound.com have created a wikipedia (http://www.ninwiki.com/Main_Page) for the game, which is the best way to start off. One of the songs, My violent heart, has been "leaked" as part of the game.

I've not been clued in! Dangit! I heard the first single, "Survivalism" on the radio yesterday. Very cool. I'll need to check this out.

[edit]HOLY CRAP! This is AWESOME!

NIN is one of my fav bands of all time and i just saw them last year, awesome show. I heard survivalism and violent heart and i like them both but perfer violent heart. it kinda sounds like his old stuff so i cant wait till this comes out and hopefully he will tour back here in the states again.
Also he has a DVD coming out of his current WITH TEETH tour on february27th i believe, so that should be cool too.

Anyone remember The Beast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beast_%28game%29) game when A.I. came out, or the ilovebees game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_love_bees) that advertised the release of the Halo 2 video game? They were both products of the ARG (alternate reality game) company 42 Entertainment (http://www.42entertainment.com/default.html), the same people behind this new Year Zero game.

I remember how incredibly detailed the ilovebees game was, and how involved it could become at times, so I can't wait to see how this game keeps progressing.

Minion: Loves Trent Reznor because he has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with current trends in rock music, especially...*shudder*...emo music.

Emo is the new goth, and Trent was and is loved by the goth crowd, especially back around PHM time.
I'd classify PHM as a sort of electronic, gothy industrial, but I see where my sister was going with the comparison.

FROM US WIRETAP---(via year zero)

AGENT SIKES
Good morning, Officer Slanski. My name is Claire Sikes. I’m with the Feds, and they have yanked me out of my cozy bed to wrap up this mess.

SLANSKI
Mess? I guess that’s one word for it.

AGENT SIKES
OK, let’s just step through the formalities.

SLANSKI
That’s not an FBI badge.

AGENT SIKES
No, it’s not. Officer Slanski, do you understand that this is an official inquiry into events surrounding the terrorist incident on the seventh of February?

SLANSKI
I do.

AGENT SIKES
And do you understand that what you say today is held to be under the force of oath, and any deviations from the truth will constitute perjury and be punishable as such?

SLANSKI
Do I need a lawyer here, or a union rep?

AGENT SIKES
Do you understand?

SLANSKI
I do.

AGENT SIKES
So. February seventh.

SLANSKI
I was walking my beat—

AGENT SIKES
Walking? Isn’t there a civilian patrol for that?

SLANSKI
I like to do it myself every few days. People will tell you stuff if they know you.

AGENT SIKES
Very commendable I’m sure.

SLANSKI
I got a 10-48 to the Star Chamber so I got there as fast as I could.

AGENT SIKES
Star Chamber?

SLANSKI
That’s what they call the building. They used to print the Star out of there, back when there were newspapers.

AGENT SIKES
But the building is empty now.

SLANSKI
Yes.

AGENT SIKES
And locals call it the Star Chamber.

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
Officer Slanski? You seem to be taking a long time to answer the question.

SLANSKI
I’m trying to guess how much you know already.

AGENT SIKES
I know.
Why don’t you assume I know everything, and go from there? It will save time.

SLANSKI
No, it’s just called the Star Building. But underground, where the printing presses used to be, there’s a big open space. That’s the Star Chamber.

AGENT SIKES
Which is a …nightclub?

SLANSKI
It’s just a place. Sometimes people get together there. Sometimes they play some music. It’s not very organized, as far as I know.

AGENT SIKES
As far as you know? I would think it would be your job to find out exactly how organized it was.

SLANSKI
I guess I’m not a very good cop.

AGENT SIKES
Actually, you know, I was looking at the stats for your districts. Over the last eight years, when you have been shift boss, districts under your supervision have consistently reported violent crime rates 15 to 20 percent below comparable districts matched by demo-profiles.

SLANSKI
There’s good people in the district.

AGENT SIKES
Curiously, your districts also consistently under-report violations of the Freedom Act.

SLANSKI
It’s pretty sleepy out here.

AGENT SIKES
Criminal speech, negligent morale, that sort of thing.

SLANSKI
People just want to watch TV.

AGENT SIKES
The difference is, citizens tend to report violent crime, whereas usually law enforcement officers are driving Freedom Act investigations. But you don’t have much of an arrest record on that score.

SLANSKI
There’s a lot of law-abiding folks in my district. Just bad luck, I guess.

AGENT SIKES
(no response)

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
Did you know any of the dead?

SLANSKI
What?

AGENT SIKES
The dead. There were 112 people locked in an underground nightclub you permitted to operate in your district. They were murdered over the course of 2 days, hunted down and torn to bloody pieces. I’m asking if you knew any of them.

SLANSKI
Yeah.

AGENT SIKES
Do you find yourself wondering if they would have been alive if you had shut that place down? I mean, if I was you, that’d be all I could think about.

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
You answered the 10-48 and went immediately to the Star Chamber.

SLANSKI
When I got there a couple of feds were already stringing quarantine tape.

AGENT SIKES
Could you hear anything?

SLANSKI
Screams. Screaming and yelling. People beating on the doors, but the feds had already padlocked all the doors.

AGENT SIKES
By Feds you mean people like me.

SLANSKI
Yes.

AGENT SIKES
What was your role?

SLANSKI
Crowd control. Some phone calls got out. We had people showing up trying to get into the Star building.

AGENT SIKES
And your job was to keep them back.

SLANSKI
People had kids in there. Brothers and sisters.

AGENT SIKES
And according to these notes, you did your job very well.

SLANSKI
It wasn’t my wife or kid dying in there.

AGENT SIKES
But you were “sick about the fucking feds and you wanted to kill someone.”

SLANSKI
The psychologist? You have a bug in the fucking office of the police psychologist?

AGENT SIKES
Don’t be paranoid, Officer Slanski. The psychologist turned over her records voluntarily.

SLANSKI
Of course she did.

AGENT SIKES
Apparently she isn’t as willing to look the other way as you are when it comes to subversive thoughts. About some things, maybe—but in the face of a terrorist incident which had just taken the lives of 112 Americans….

SLANSKI I
’m not a fucking politician. I just said it made me sick to hear those people in there. There wasn’t anything we could have done? I can’t believe there wasn’t anything.

AGENT SIKES
Try.

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
Hard.

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
Two days later you were called back to the scene. Describe what happened then.

SLANSKI
You know what happened.

AGENT SIKES
Yes, but I’m very thorough, so I’d like to hear you tell it. Tell me what happened yesterday.

SLANSKI
Crowd control again. A bunch of guys in bunny suits went into the building with some very serious equipment.

AGENT SIKES
What kind of equipment?

SLANSKI
I don’t know. Flamethrowers and shit.

AGENT SIKES
And then?

SLANSKI
Then nothing. That’s it.

AGENT SIKES
(no response)

SLANSKI
There was an agent.

AGENT SIKES
Yes.

SLANSKI
Like you. Same badges.

AGENT SIKES
Yes.

SLANSKI
And that’s it. She ran the clean-up. Went inside, saw what she came to see I assume, pulled out the decon unit and left.

AGENT SIKES
Not quite like me.

SLANSKI
Listen, I really don’t need to know anything here. I’m not a great cop but I like the job, I like the guys, I like my family.

AGENT SIKES
Yes. I have pictures of your little girl. Would you like to see them?

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
I like this one the best. She looks adorable.

SLANSKI
(No response)

AGENT SIKES
The other agent wasn’t quite like me.

SLANSKI
Fuck.
I wasn’t trying anything. I was just being polite, I just opened the car door for christ’s sake.

AGENT SIKES
(no response)

SLANSKI
She smelled strange. Coppery. She brushed by me as she got in the car and it was like I had a penny
in my mouth just for a second.

AGENT SIKES
Anything else?

SLANSKI
(no response)

AGENT SIKES
Jeff, I can’t help you if you aren’t 100 percent—

SLANSKI
She was crying.

AGENT SIKES
But that wasn’t the strange part.

SLANSKI
And her tears were orange.

AGENT SIKES
That’s right, they were.

SLANSKI
I didn’t mean to see that!

AGENT SIKES
I know.

And, I’m sorry.

So Pretty Hate Machine with its industrial style is EMO?? And ur justifacation for it is because he says heart or love? You just described about every song there is. So all songs are emo? im just curious and confused.

Help me out here, bands that cry about that crap are EMO bands like Fall Out Boy, Good Charlette, Matchbox Romance, Panic! At the Disco. Its just weird cause i have taken shit for listening to him and have heard countless times about how he "cries and whines" but have never heard NIN referred to as EMO, thats a first to me.

And when he says he doesnt like all the bands that are coming out nowadays, i agree with him but at the same time that is his opinoin and try not to take it to heart.

oh dear, sensitive much?

Whenever I ask people what defines "EMO" I hear that it's guys who whine about their relationships. So... that would put PHM right up there. it's not because he references love or "heart." It's because of lines like "you're the one who taught me how to kiss."

I am not in any way trying to bash Trent. But, while I do not like any of the bands you listed above, I do not like the labeling of bands as "whiny guy music" (EMO). Because if EMO is qualified as music that guys listen to when they need to cut themselves then PHM qualifies in a MAJOR way.

I mean seriously... Ringfinger??

Obviously I like NIN, I started this thread didn't I? And I don't think that all NIN is EMO - for instance, the Downward Spiral is really novel in album form. It tells a specific story about human darkness etc... But, like Jake said EMO is the new Goth and whether Trent likes it or not (he has said in interviews that he does not), he helped usher in the Goth- era. Plus, Trent's look at the time of PHM was perfect EMO - skinny as a rail rocker in tight leather pants.

Gentlemen Death
02-23-2007, 10:35 PM
You know what, i agree 100% with you. I loved PHM and i can def see what u are saying about it. From when it came out, if EMO was assaciated with music terminology back then, then i can see people calling this EMO. Of all his albums PHM, if i were to say it at all, would be the closest to EMO then his others, hands down

See to me i dont consider NIN goth at all. I went to see them in 2000 with The Fragility tour and last year With Teeth, and i saw alot of gothic peeps, i mean alot. And when i listen to his cds, like Broken, i get confused when people confuse that with gothic music i mean i can see HOW they could, but just not computing with me. Why just because its dark and deep does that mean its gothic? No, but i believe thats what its interpeted as. Goth music in my opinion is Cradle of Filth or even H.I.M. And u know what, even then i dont know if i would lable those as goth. H.I.M would be Love Metal and as for Cradle Of Filth, maybe speed metal.

As for EMO being the new goth, i could believe that. Alot of that music is pretty suggestive to wanting to hurt themselves or tear it apart. What throws me of about EMO being the new Goth, is that statement alone, EMO=Goth. I dont understand it and dont know if i ever will. When i was younger goth was the music like cradle of filth, nin, skinny puppy, marylin manson and now its being compared to taking back sunday, fall out boy, my chemical romance and so on.

Im curious to know what u think of what Goth music is, marylin manson, skinny puppy, cannibal corpse? I dont know.

Jakester
02-24-2007, 06:14 AM
Isn't cannibal corpse more death metal?

No. Goth is Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Cure, His Name is Alive, This Mortal Coil. Then you toss in NIN, and Curve (Yeah, weird but I knew a lot of goths who were into them, but that may have more to do with Toni in black leather than anything else) and you start to have Goth fuse with industrial. Since, after PHM, Trent was the new Prince of Goth, and it's just a title he hasn't really shaken, because so many goth (and now emo) kids can identify with the lyrics.

Oh...no, I didn't make myself clear...as always. It's not that I don't think Trent has his emo tendencies....but come on, you can listen to that stuff. The lyrics may sound Emo, but Trent can make it sound awesome. I simply hate the 'sound' of emo music these days, and the sound of the singers, and...well, the lack of originality it has generated. I'm suspecting that is where Trent is coming from, especially considering the experimental sound of the new album....not neccessarily the subject matter (if being emo is simply whining about forlorn love...well, everyone is emo) but the sound of it.

Minion: Does not recommend listening to the song "Right Where It Belongs" when drunk....you'll start questioning WAY too much.

You think NIN would go so far as to release the whole album one song at a time?

Gentlemen Death
03-02-2007, 12:00 PM
I personally, like waiting untill the album comes out to even hear one of the songs. But with NIN i listened to 'Survivalism' and 'Violent Heart' which were both decent. I never got into the free downloading or the 'slips' of the song that the Artist never let 'slip'.

I always enjoyed the waiting, like waiting for christmas or even your birthday. I am not saying that NIN has done any of this and i am not saying is doing it.

I checked out the YearZero stuff and honestly, i do not really care for the whole conspiracy or whatever it is. Just give me the album and i will determine what the songs mean for me. Although, the yearzero stuff is pretty crazy.

Minion
03-02-2007, 12:26 PM
You think NIN would go so far as to release the whole album one song at a time?

Doubtful the whole album, but you never know...it's definitely experimental and releasing the album like some sort of leaked information to go along with the game would be cool.

Didn't Trent say that he's been working on another album that'll be released a year later as well? I swore I heard that on the radio the other day...

Minion: We have a saying in the radio business: "We're in the radio business and if you saying something on the radio, people will listen!"

Jakester
03-02-2007, 01:19 PM
GD, the "leaks" aren't really leaks. The songs are being legitimately released as part of the game. At this point, I'd say that the understanding of the world of the game is integral to the understanding and real appreciation of the album. I expect that it will be able to stand on its own merits, but when you know the story behind it, you will be able to better appreciate it.

Travis, yeah...Part one is Year Zero, and I believe the next album will be a thematic continuation of YZ. And when that's out, apparently With Teeth willl make sense, too.

Ughh....getting into this thing is going to be a bitch. Except for standing outside the place for, at the very least, 4-5 hours in advance, it's going to be luck alone. The local radio station (X96 (http://www.x96.com)) is giving away wristbands to get into the show, so hopefully I can score one...if not, well hell...I might be screwed. The Avalon doesn't hold that many folks, and it's first come first serve.

Perhaps I can just stalk the morning show folks (Radio From Hell (http://www.x96.com/12605TIME/djs/rfh.asp)) and get one off of them....

As for the album itself...hell, I'm damn impressed. So far I'm addicted to "Me, I'm Not". It never leaves the playlist...something about that chorus and the "Hey, can we stop.....me, I'm not" that just freaks me the hell out.

No, I didn't make it...but not for lack of trying. There are a LOT of NIN fans in SLC and everyone knew about this listening party. Why? Because the damned radio stations (like three of them...one of which I didn't even realize played NIN) announced it ahead of time and were giving out wristbands to get in. You basically had to win a wristband from the station to get in.

I recently went to the listening party in San Francisco on 11th st.( weird st. by the way, can not explain it, just had to have been there at night) and i do not know if it was the fact that everyone was there for NIN, but this CD kicked major ass and all the people there enjoyed it and i did not hear one mixed review about it.

I cant believe all the rare shit that they had when i walked in through the doors. They had NIN stuff i havent seen before and stuff from there Downward Spiral tour and more. I can not wait to see him on tour this year and hopefully he grew some hair back...that was weird to see him like that; was not used to it.

He's been all ripped and had short hair for a while. I think he looks great.

So...Year Zero was leaked for like a day or two??

I was able to download Hyperpower but had to wait 8 mins to get the next song and never made it back. I check today, and it's all gone.

Damn...Missed out.

Sweetcheeks, get the c0ck out of your ears and listen. I said "download" as in to keep, to cherish, to burn on CD and rub over my body. I've listened to the streaming version online already several times. Which I might add was freaking awesome.

It just happens that there was a day I checked ninwiki and each song had a link to allow for download. I'm sure it wasn't official (who knows, maybe it was) but the links and any comments regarding it have disappeared.

Rub all over your body? Will you have an Oompah perform this service for you?

OIC. Yeah, sorry about the dick in ear thing. It's a fetish.

There were links to...er..4 songs. While you'll never hear that they were officially leaked, the fact that USB drives would miraculously appear in restrooms during concerts with various songs (and in one case, the "Survivalism" video) encoded at 320kbps, one would think they had to come from someone with connections. In fact, they were part of the ARG, and the USB drives also had other info hidden by various means on them to help move the game along.

BTW, one more week and we'll have the shibby thermachromed CD in our grubby little hands.

Holy....okay, NIN is now just...yeah, they are above all artists. I'm sorry, but anyone who puts on an underground concert for ~60 people and stages it being raided by SWAT.

Yeah, they kick ass.

Don't trust me? Watch it here:

Minion: Starts around 30 minutes or so.

Yeah, that's just amazingly cool.
What do you think of the CD, the package, and all of the snazzy hidden stuff?
The CD trick is AWESOME!

I loved that I bought the CD between classes one day, and as I was reading the liner notes this girl next to me pick it up, opened it and must have touched the CD itself. The thermochrome activated and she freaked the hell out!

I'm scanning the big mural of the desolate future into my computer, doing a little fixing up, and turning it into a poster for my apartment.

Minon: Can't believe all the crazy crap...he also wishes he lived in L.A. and got to see the secret concert.

Godamn, that whole experience sounded AWESOME! At least we can relive it through AIR!

Uh...GD...touch the CD. Play it for a while and look at it. The binary actually means something. Decode it.

Oh, you could also read from the beginning of the thread!

HEHE, thanks jakester.
I noticed what happens when you touch the cd, which is fucking awesome. As for all the little decoding, i am not to sure about that.

I know that in each song that is written down in the booklet, that there is a letter that is highlighted in red, is that what you mean? Also that each page has hidden #s that i have not quite figuered out yet, any insight to that?

Man, that is some deep shit! Listened to all the audio files they had on there(gameover, inahurry, etc.) some really weird shit, kinda creepy.

Now i also got the link to bethehammer.net. That one was a little more weird. Talking about going out and killng people, and blowing up military gyms and communications arays.

The funny thing is, is that Trent better be careful of what he puts up on the web here, the government is going to get ahold of it and try and shut him down, and say he was avacating violence.

What is your take on this???

Jakester
04-27-2007, 06:23 AM
That's all old stuff, too. There's the audio (also old) of a government led massacre at an underground club, and what they're putting in the water...there's lots of freaky shit. It's very well done, and some of the stories are really moving.

Go to http://www.freerebelart.com and follow the directions.

Just for people who want to catch up, there is now a site that acts as a sort of compilation site: http://www.exhibit24.net/

Minion: Is branded on the lists. He is now part of the problem.

This is some really deep shit. So what are your guys take on all of this. I mean i know it is all fake, but it certainly makes you think.

As for the new cd, freaking awesome. Everytime i listen to a different song i find new stuff in it, and that just makes the whole experience better. Trent really outdid himself this time. Crazy shit!
