I know this may seem a little early to some . . . (philistines), but are we going to have another Yahoo league this year? Last year was great fun and I feel I do need to avenge my second place finish.

Adam54
02-20-2007, 05:46 PM
For sure.

I suppose I'm commish by default?

I'm only going to let people in who PM me if interested, so we don't wind up with two teams owned by one person like we did that one year. Or was it last year? *shrug* They all blur together.

Yeah, PM me if you're interested people, and I'll get something set up by March.

It's been a year already? Holy crap.

Anyway, I'm in. I'll send you a note pretty soon.

My new favorite quote:
"Watching Cubs fans get excited about an upcoming season is a little bit like watching a toddler play with a balloon - you know it's all going to end in tears, but why not let them have some fun? "

Adam54

hah! I like that. :D

Two PMs in my box so far. Scotia has promised, but not delivered.

So counting her, and counting me, that'd make 4. Halfway to our normal league.

Who else wants in?? Come on people! It's low maintenance!

"HER" is it? Niiiiiice..........

So, what's the format this time around. The 5x5 head-to-head was ok, didn't generate that much trash talk thou. I was throwing insults all over the place and barely got a grunt out of most of you ('cept Droogie, he's my bitch).

A 5x5 ROTO is my favourite way to roll, my first choice if I had to pick.

Adam54

I have been strongly misled, Bree. :p

And yet we still love balloons. And one of these days we'll figure out not to stick a pin into the side, and look out.

I usually prefer to do head-to-head, but I'm willing to try a rotisserie this year.

Reduced to being Scotia's baseball bitch . . . oh what a sad commentary on our times.

I'll go with any format, head to head is easier to catch up if you fall behind. regular 5x5 is easier to maintain. I'm flexible.

I'll set something up this weekend, I hope.

But we definitely could still use a few more people.

Where ar we at now Adam?

Is eight the minimum?

Adam54
03-07-2007, 03:01 PM
There's technically no minimum, but 8+ makes it work the best.

Can somebody give a primer on how fantasy baseball works? I got a PM that I've been too lazy/busy to respond to asking about it, and haven't replied.

But it'd be good to have out in public in case there's more than one who doesn't know what's the what.

Here is a link to a simple Fantasy FAQ. Try this for starters. I'll try to find some others.

Yeah, fantasy BBall is not near as complicated as you might think. If you like baseball and understand player postions and stats, then that's half the battle. You'll easily catch on to a fantasy league. 'Course guys like Droogie and Adam still look to their moms for help.

I found a decent summery at Wiki in case anybody needs further explaination.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_baseball

And Adam, is there any way Mania can throw in some prizes this year. Hats, DVDs, tickets? These guys seem to have a lot more cash on hand then Cinescape ever did. Can you make it so?

Adam54
03-12-2007, 07:32 PM
Heh, that'd be a question for Jarrod.

And I guess I'd better set up a league fairly soon. It'd just be nice to get a couple more people in first though.

Where's negs when you need her?

neglet
03-13-2007, 05:32 AM
Going to Opening Day at Tiger Stadium. :D

I dunno, manipulating baseball lineups sounds like too much work to me, especially when you're talking such a long season. I suppose I could actually read the explanation of fantasy baseball and see whether it's something my lazy ass could actually do.

<reads info on Yahoo.>

Eh. I'm really not that up on MLB players, and not into statistics, so it sounds like too much work just to offer up my ignorance for your easy victories. I think I'll stick with watching the Tigers. It's actually not a shameful pastime anymore! My friend and I plan to get T-shirts that say "I was a Tigers fan before 2006" to wear to Opening Day, our fifth consecutive. (That's right, we went the year they almost broke the MLB record for losses.)

Here's the irony, Negs. It seems like a big ordeal to switch out players everyday for good half year but it's not actually required.

I used to change out baseball fantasy players all the time and my sister ended up beating me and she NEVER changed out her pitchers, lineup, etc....I couldn't stop laughing because there I was switching out IR players, starting pitchers..and everything else.

She didn't even knew she won...I just said it one day...."Hey, sis....you won!" with as much discipline and frustration as I could.

:D

Just sign up to fill a team coach role...and a team slot. I'll do the same, Negs. You seem to beat most of us anyway so even if you're not familiar with baseball, I bet you do good.

Scotia reminded me of the baseball league...I'll join it too, Adam. I was reluctant on joining because I'm trying to set up interviews with John Carpenter, George Romero, George Lucas, and other industry people for the main site. That and I have 3 weekly columns to do now over there...but I'll still be a team to see if I can keep up with the rankings....Hell, maybe my sister being lazy is the right method to go...Get a good team together and leave it alone.

And I can see about getting a prize package for winners of this years league. If anything, I'll buy the prizes with money I receieve from Mania for my columns. I'll try to get some prizes together...we can all talk later in the baseball season about it.

So we have eight.

I also have one outsider looking in, which would bring us to nine (and it is a shame, he's usually great with these things).

But nine is an odd number. Odd numbers don't work well with head to head.

Without anybody even *trying* to back out of this (here's looking at you, negs :p), does anybody know of anyone who'd want in? Just one person, so we can add Mister Pike, and then give us a ten?

Or should I just say "eight is enough, get your drafts ready, we'll do it this weekend."

Regardless, if you have a friend, let us know within the next day or so, preferably.

That is all,

Signed,

Mod/Commish.

Oh, as opposed to being a fan of the Minnehaha Gophers? I hope you like wrestling, cuz there's no point in following football or basketball.

Or the wonderful Vikings? Yeah, they're a class organization with many successful seasons ... thirty years ago. I think they had as many wins in the courtroom as they did on the field last year.

Oh, I suppose the Twins do okay. But who were the AL champs last year? Please remind me, my memory is short.

The Timberwolves? They can't even win "most Northerly NBA team" any more.

Do you even have an NHL team up in Minnesota? Didn't they desert for more desert-like climes?

And so, dear Adam, I wouldn't throw too many more stones from inside your frost-covered glass house.

But to nitpick?

1. New coaches in football, and Tubby F'n Smith in basketball! :D

2. I'm a Colts fan.

3. Nobody in Minnesota cares about the Wolves. Nobody.

4. The Minnesota Wild play hockey, and do it well.

5. SI picked the Twins to finish fourth....in the DIVISION!

that'd be blasphemy.

I'm most excited about Markakis and what he can do this year. He came around nicely last season and could be a real sleeper pick. I really wanted Utley too(cuz 2b is so f*cking dry) and somebody stronger than Fielder at 1b. Giambi's best days are behind him.

Anyway, right now im looking to deal for another closer. So, maybe Bree can part with one of the five he's got.

DarkJedi
03-26-2007, 12:06 AM
Watch Giambi slug 40 homeruns and average .299-.315 for the year. :D

I've been ready since Day 1 but I have to be honest when saying EPSN Magazine almost had me cheating (ala listing to their Fantasy Choice Picks).

If anyone familiar with EPSN Magazine knows, they're like wrong always... Their NFL season picks were laughable at best. Their fantasy choices last year was an utter joke.

No, I will continue with my own picks as it is and go with the consequences from it.

I'm also worried about only having one position player per field spot. Dear lord, our Mondays and Thursdays(when half the MLB are on off days) will be skewered.

Okay, can someone give me the retard's guide to how this league works? The one player per fielding position makes sense, but what is the UTL position for? Is that where you can slot in a DH player, or what?

Some pitchers are listed as SPs (starting pitchers), whereas others are just Ps even if they're a regular starting pitcher for their team. Does that mean I designate 3 (or whatever) pitchers to be my starting pitchers for that week, or do I have to go in every friggin' day and figure out who's scheduled to start? Since we're head-to-head weekly, is there any point in changing your lineup daily? Or do you just need to swap out players who might be resting, or who you think will underperform?

This already looks like too much work. It makes me want to go to the Park right now and get one of those giant daiquiris.

The Utl or "utility" slot can be filled by any hitter on your team. It doesn't have to be a DH. Think of it as just another way to get an additional bat in the lineup.

Some pitchers are listed as SPs (starting pitchers), whereas others are just Ps even if they're a regular starting pitcher for their team.
The SP, RP and P lists are pretty much the same, with just some minor exceptions. You can fill the "P" slot with any pitcher on your staff, a starter or reliever. It doesn't matter. Think of it as the utility spot for your hurlers.

However, the SP and RP slots themselves can only be occupied by their respective pitchers. That is, a starter is the only player that can occupy the SP slot. Likewise, the RP slot is limited to relievers/closers. Make sense? It's just a way to insert as many arms as possible into your rotation.

Does that mean I designate 3 (or whatever) pitchers to be my starting pitchers for that week, or do I have to go in every friggin' day and figure out who's scheduled to start?
Once the regular season starts, you'll notice little icons (that kinda look like this " ^ " which indicate that your pitcher is expected to start. You can look a few days ahead and schedule all your starters in the "SP" or "P" slots. However, the system in not 100% reliable, guys get hurt, scratched, whatever. And that can f*ck you up. It's a good practise to check in a few times a week to see whats going on and to see if a starter got moved up in the rotation.

Since we're head-to-head weekly, is there any point in changing your lineup daily? Or do you just need to swap out players who might be resting, or who you think will underperform?
Daily edits are encouraged, Negs, for all the reasons mentioned above. Of course, since you and I are squaring off first, you can disregard any advice I've given you. :Smirk:

How do you get your DL guys on the Yahoo DL, anyway? Just add a player, and they automatically bump your DL player to the DL?

Droogie
04-22-2007, 03:17 PM
Naaa, the pull down next to the player is a designator for DL. You have to move your dl player there first before you can add anyone.

neglet

I eventually figured out that you have to have your listing in "classic" mode. If it's in the drag-and-drop with the pretty colored buttons, then you already have to have a DL position to drag someone down there.
