This would actually be funny, in a dark-humour Tarantino sort of way, except you've gotta feel bad for the guy who got shot. Kinda too soon to laugh about.

Until he gets better. Then it's okay!

Maybe it's just as well Tricky Dicky never served in the 'Nam.

I laughed the first time I heard it, an my mind is so twisted, I probably would have laughed even if the man died. God, Dick is such a dick. Well, one thing is for sure, that is just what the administration needs right now. Luckily, they had one really fantastic medical team accompaning them, because Cheney was there.

Actually the "Cheney kills hunting partner" headline made me laugh just now. I'm a terrible person. I think it's because it just sounds a bit more like premeditated murder than an accident.

I guess though that we shouldn't feel too bad for the guy who got shot. Read the last sentence of the article that Space linked to: "The nature of quail shooting ensures that this will happen. It goes with the turf." So apparently, everyone who participates in this activity knows what they are getting into, and it also seems like this guy didn't exactly follow proper procedure. So to be fair, I guess we can't really blame Cheney.... which ultimately makes this whole story much less funny.

The weirdest thing is that I've had a craving for quail for days. I nearly bought a couple last Saturday but decided otherwise when I saw the price tag. Perhaps it was me who made Dick do this?

This is not nearly as bad as it's been made out to be. What happened is the guy got hit by the pepper in a shotgun shell. Essentially, he got hit by some relatively fine gravel that was superheated because of the reaction that propels a bullet. He didn't get hit by any of the bearings or the shell itself.

Essentially, he got hit by some relatively fine gravel that was superheated because of the reaction that propels a bullet. He didn't get hit by any of the bearings or the shell itself.

The way I read the article, and apologies if there's a newer article with better information, he got "peppered by bird shot", i.e. the actual shot load.

When you're hunting quail or other fowl, you're using birdshot, which means a cartridge containing lots of small BBs - more pellets increasing the likelihood of hitting a small flying target, and the shot can be small because it doesn't take much to kill fowl. For bigger game, like deer, you use a cartridge containing buckshot (fewer, larger BBs) or a single slug. And the only way to be hit by the "shell" is to be standing in the way when the shell case is ejected from the action.

So, yeah, he actually got hit by the shell load. But I agree it's not as bad as it's been made out to be in some reports. It was bird shot at 30 yards - unlikely to be lethal, but it'll draw blood. It's the eyes you've gotta watch out for.

And this is all written from the point of view of the high school me. I haven't been out hunting since I left behind rural life to go to college almost 14 years ago. If I got any of the details wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me :)

In the break room at our office we have the TV on CNN. The sound was turned down, but we were reading the captions during the press conference about the "shooting." Anyway, The Onion (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/45363) has some comments on the Cheney incident as well.

As did others:

"Late Show with David Letterman," CBS
"Good news, ladies and gentlemen, we have finally located weapons of mass destruction: It's Dick Cheney."

"But here is the sad part -- before the trip Donald Rumsfeld had denied the guy's request for body armor."

"We can't get Bin Laden, but we nailed a 78-year-old attorney."

"The guy who got gunned down, he is a Republican lawyer and a big Republican donor and fortunately the buck shot was deflected by wads of laundered cash. So he's fine. He took a little in the wallet."

"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," NBC
"Although it is beautiful here in California, the weather back East has been atrocious. There was so much snow in Washington, D.C., Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fat guy thinking it was a polar bear.

"That's the big story over the weekend. ... Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter, a 78-year-old lawyer. In fact, when people found out he shot a lawyer, his popularity is now at 92 percent."

"I think Cheney is starting to lose it. After he shot the guy he screamed, 'Anyone else want to call domestic wire tapping illegal?"'

"Dick Cheney is capitalizing on this for Valentine's Day. It's the new Dick Cheney cologne. It's called Duck!"

"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Comedy Central
"Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a man during a quail hunt ... making 78-year-old Harry Whittington the first person shot by a sitting veep since Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, of course, (was) shot in a duel with Aaron Burr over issues of honor, integrity and political maneuvering. Whittington? Mistaken for a bird."

"Now, this story certainly has its humorous aspects. ... But it also raises a serious issue, one which I feel very strongly about. ... moms, dads, if you're watching right now, I can't emphasize this enough: Do not let your kids go on hunting trips with the vice president. I don't care what kind of lucrative contracts they're trying to land, or energy regulations they're trying to get lifted -- it's just not worth it."

"Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," CBS
"He is a lawyer and he got shot in the face. But he's a lawyer, he can use his other face. He'll be all right."

"You can understand why this lawyer fellow let his guard down, because if you're out hunting with a politician, you think, 'If I'm going to get it, it's going to be in the back.' "

"The big scandal apparently is that they didn't release the news for 18 hours. I don't think that's a scandal at all. I'm quite pleased about that. Finally there's a secret the vice president's office can keep."

"Apparently the reason they didn't release the information right away is they said we had to get the facts right. That's never stopped them in the past." link

Interesting note on this -

On Monday when I first read the whole story (I beleive from CNN) it was pointed out that Whittington was invitied to the hunt by the ranch owner and not a guest of Cheney's. It was unknown to the rancher if the two men had ever met.

Last night on Foxnews, Van Susteren was labeling Whittington as Cheney's "friend" and that upon hearing of the mild heart attack, he rushed to the Hospital. Actually their website (Fox) now states that Cheney called the hospital to check on his condition.

Hmm.. No desperate political spin by Gretta there huh? After all, these guys need all the good press they can get.:smirk:

Well, I guess even his mother calls him that.

Now he's of course taking "full responsibility" for all this. I guess it's harder for his political opponents to attack him when he says "It's all my fault" than when he says "Look, it's mostly that other guy's fault."

All these jokes would be much funnier if this accident had really been mostly Cheney's fault. Now it just feels like people are trying to milk this as much as possible, because it's been a while since Cheney has been in the public crossfire (no pun intended) like that.

And it's "a stigma", not "a stigmata" (perhaps "a case of stigmata"?), as "stigmata" is the plural of "stigma". Retarded, indeed.

All jokes aside, the issue is the lack of response, the refusal to respond which points to a blatant attempt to downplay or cover up the incident and as usual wth this administration, the outright inability to fully disclose or comment for more than 1 week.

They are in the hot seat for once again proving they don't want full disclosure to the public about anything they do.

That is something I really don't understand. The person who was hunting was Dick Cheney, not Vice President Dick Cheney, i.e. the quail hunt was not a part of his duties as VP, so I don't know why the administration should be expected to comment on something that happened in his private life. If he had shot, say, the Canadian Prime Minister during an official visit - now that's something where I'd expect immediate official statements from the administration.

I'm always confused by this, and chalk it up to my being eleven years old at the time, but how is it that the Clinton-Lewinsky affair warranted a grand jury investigation in the first place? It's always seemed to me that this was just his private life being dragged into an incredibly public light, and I've never understood why that required a grand jury.

The Duck of Death might be "retiring" after mid term elections:

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year. (http://www.insightmag.com/Media/MediaManager/cheney3.htm)

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.
