Nah, it's only March.
Actually, I should ask "Can the Cinescape Forums actually handle another female NFL fan?". What can I say guys, you got us started on this stuff by inviting us over on Sundays to flirt and make nachos, and now some of us are hopelessly hooked.
Disclaimer: I do not now or will every claim to know everything about the NFL.
BUT
If I could watch every game, I would. Because I live in the Midwest, I don't get to see too many of the West Coast/Southern teams, with the huge exception of Dallas - I don't know why, but I see a lot of Dallas. So some teams I never know how they are doing except by looking at their scores on a week by week basis and listening carefully to pre-game coverage.
So let's do a little "Team", "Coach" and "Player". Who do you like? Who do you hate? Who needs what?
TEAM
You know what I like to do? Around week 5 or 6 I pick two teams or so that I think have potential and see how they do. Last season, I picked Atlanta and New Orleans. Atlanta proved they had talent, but absolutely no discipline. I was very satisfied with how New Orleans performed, better than I could have expected. Kansas City seems to be the born spoilers of the league. I can never figure out KC, or Miami either.
COACH
I'm not good at remembering coaches' names, and it sure doesn't help when Andy Reid is Mike Holmgrum's doppleganger. He's been created so Mike can get two paychecks, right? Actually I feel the coaching has dramatically improved over the years - I've been watching for 20+. I think Lovie Smith is dreamy*sigh*, and I can't stand that blonde screamer Tampa Bay has. :puke: Damn that boy is a channel changer.
PLAYERS
I thought Romo really brought Dallas back from the dead last season. Before he came up I would have given Dallas maybe three wins for the whole season. Maybe three. The Bears lost Thomas Jones. Big, sad loss there. Whoever gets him will be very happy though.
OK enough of my prattling. Anyone have any stuff of their own to add?
Otherwise, wake me when it's August.

It's almost draft time! And if the Lions spend yet another top 10 pick on a receiver, I think I will scream. And I'd rather see them make a good trade down than pick Brady "choker" Quinn.

Please please PLEASE have Millen select Calvin Johnson. I swear, I may shit myself and pass out from laughter if that happens.
Oh and in terms of 'choker' Quinn, wasn't that the same knock on Manning when he came out from Tennessee? He couldn't win the big game? I think he turned out to be a pretty decent QB. :Smirk:

If that happens, please take a picture and send it to me. It will be the only thing able to make me smile, unless Bill Ford then fires Millen and/or sells the team.

I don't think Manning had the rep of underperforming in big games, though. If you look at Quinn this year, his stats look good except when Notre Dame played anybody decent. Then his completions were under 50% and he had a couple of turnovers. I dunno, I just thought all year he was overrated because he plays at Notre Dame.

Well, they went 7-9 this season with a few close losses. They've already sewed up pretty much everyone who was a threat to leave (including Frank Gore in the last couple days -- 4 years, $14M guaranteed... he's gotta be a happy guy and he's worth every penny of it), made some good coaching changes since the end of the season and have been making solid draft picks for the last couple years (B to B+, maybe A- in the case of some individual picks). I think 8-8 is almost expecting them to underperform. 10-6 sounds realistic to me.
RedKarma
03-31-2007, 07:06 AM
I had no idea they finished that well last year. Like I said, I don't get to see many West Coast games, but I did see one if their close ones early in the season.
You've got to be happy they made some good picks in the past, a lot of fans think some teams don't shoot for what the team seems to need.
neglet brought up a good point about a school's reputation "making" a player, and I agree that's a dangerous game. The numbers can't tell you everything you need to know. Maybe I remember the story wrong, but back in the 90's I thought Minnesota made some huge trade agreement to get a QB at the expense of four or five others and they guy turned into a total albatross. Turned out he wasn't so much a great player as his team was #1 in defense that year. Sure he had a trophy, but he wasn't the play maker, he was just benefitting from his team's awesome D. If a team doesn't do their research, and have their own scouts watch the players, that's the kind of crap that happens.

Wait...are you from Minnesota? *eyebrow raises*
Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota T-Pups could teach clinics in disasterous trades and contracts. I'm not sure which QB you're referring to, but the Hershell (sp) Walker deal in the early 90s is widely considered one of the worst NFL trades ever.
And the Vikings continued struggles and acceptance of mediocrity makes me all the happier to be a Minnesotan Colts fan. *beams*

I have no doubt you took some grief for that, but it worked out nicely in your favor in the end. Nothing like having bragging rights to rub some choice noses in, isn't it?
Actually I'm in Bear Country, but I've found I've become more about the game over the years.
I thought it was for a QB, but I could very well be mixed up, it could be the Walker deal I was thinking of. In the Walker deal, didn't they trade something like two years worth of picks in advance too? Eee gads, that was terrible.
Adam54
04-01-2007, 07:48 PM
Oh it wouldn't shock me if they made a bad trade for a QB somewhere along the line. The Walker deal was...God...let me google it quick.
Vikings in bold. Cowboys not. Too difficult to line everything up just right so it's all pretty. :p
The end results of the trade after 1992:
Vikings Cowboys
WR Jake Reed RB Emmitt Smith
DT Russell Maryland
CB Kevin Smith
S Darren Woodson
CB Clayton Holmes
Players selected with the actual picks traded to Dallas:
1990 1st Round (#21) TE Eric Green Pittsburgh
1990 2nd Round (#47) DT Dennis Brown San Francisco
1990 6th Round (#158) LB James Williams New Orleans
1991 1st Round (#11) OT Pat Harlow New England
1991 2nd Round (#38) DB Darryl Lewis Houston
1992 1st Round (#13) OL Eugene Chung New England
1992 2nd Round (#40) QB Matt Blundin Kansas City
1992 3rd Round (#71) RB Kevin Turner New England
And Walker only played a year, I think, for the Vikes.
This was the trade in it's original form. The above is what happened after Dallas moved around some of the Vikings picks.
Vikings Cowboys
RB Herschel Walker LB Jesse Solomon
Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1990 (54) LB David Howard
San Diego's 5th round pick -1990 (116) CB Isaac Holt
Dallas's 10th round pick - 1990 (249) Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (21)
Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1991 (68) Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1990 (47)
Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990 (158)
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional)-(11)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (38)
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) - (13)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (40)
Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (71)

Damn that's one tangled mess. Three years worth of picks? I know some of them were conditional, but please. They did a total gut job on their own team for this madness. I used to like the Vikings in '88, but then they just stopped producing. Now I know why.
And then, to top it all off, Walker winds up at Dallas. Too funny.
Thanks for the link Adam.

Hmmm... 49ers will see the difficulty ratcheted up a bit on them this season. Here are their home and away games (dates and times still TBA).
Home
Arizona, St. Louis, Seattle, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Baltimore, Cincinnati
Away
Arizona, St. Louis, Seattle, Atlanta, Carolina, N.Y. Giants, Cleveland, Pittsburgh
Of their division rivals, only Arizona is less than 8-8. Of non-division, conference opponents, only 2 of the 6 teams finished less than 8-8. Of the AFC teams rounding out their schedule, only Cinci is less than 8-8 (4-12). Baltimore was second in the AFC only to San Diego's 14-2. 10 of their games are against teams that ended the 2006 season 8-8 or better.
How do your teams schedules look, Maniacs?
omicron
04-04-2007, 07:56 AM
Dallas Cowboys
HOME
09/09 NY Giants
11/22 NY Jets
Washington
Philadelphia
New England
Green Bay
Minnesota
St. Louis
AWAY GAMES
Washington
NY Giants
Philadelphia
Chicago
Detroit
Carolina
Buffalo
Miami
Other than the Pats, I am not too afraid of the AFC schedule. And the NFC North division doesn't scare me too much either.
Adam54

the NFC north division IS the Chicago Bears.
The Vikings are going to suck. I heard that in the Minneapolis Paper a couple weeks ago. They were quoting the OWNER of the team as saying "yeah...probably not gonna be much better than 6-10 again. But it's still not the coach's fault!!!"
The Packers won't be good because they have an over the hill QB and a bunch of second tier role players.
And the Lions. Well, they'll be out of the race as soon as Matt Millen drafts. And yet another promising wide receiver will have his career killed.

I'm getting ready to cut holes in another brown paper bag. Although I do have to say that some of the free agent moves the Lions have made in the off season are not bad, so if they don't waste their draft pick again I think we'll see definite improvement from 3-13. (Woo f*ckin' hoo.)

I'd like to see more of San Diego this year, I can't believe they did so well and yet I didn't see hardly any of their games. Same thing for the Jets.
I wish I could say I had a lot of interest in Chicago even though they're my home team, but I don't think they'll do as well in 2007. The McCaskeys have proven time and again with few exceptions that if they can't get a player for bargain basement discount prices, they'd just as soon lose. That and I have no faith whatsoever in Rex Grossman.

It's about time. 10 years is far too long to allow this crap to go on in professional sports. It all started with Sprewell choking out Carlesimo and went downhill from there. Honestly, though, I don't think this is enough. I've been telling people since then that criminal acts should net you a lifetime ban from whatever league you play in.

Ok, the draft's over and your team has new players. How do you feel? Who had the best draft?
Obviously, I think the Browns did some fine work. They could potentially have their starting QB and his blindside protector for a decade to come.
I am ok with the Cowboy's draft. Spencer might turn out to be a nice bookend to DeMarcus Ware. I really would have like to have gotten a good receiver.

I felt pretty bad for Brady Quinn sitting in that room with his skanky girlfriend for so long. I mean, hour after hour, waiting....depressing.
Denver came out pretty well, although I questioned trading a 3rd round pick to move up 4 spots.
I think we're going to Chicago this year for a Broncos game if we can work out our schedules. Anyone nearby want to meet up?

Strange as it seems, I'm okay with the Lions drafting yet another WR in the first round. This Johnson kid seems to have the skills, and his head on straight. Since they couldn't get a trade offer they like, why pass up a guy who could be the next Randy Moss (the stats, not the attitude)?
Now, I thought it was crazy to draft a QB in the second round, but since they traded up to get two more second round picks (on defense), and still had a third, fourth, and two fifth rounders left, I can't say the Lions had an awful draft. I think they did pretty well with free agents in the off season; most important, we've got a new coach.

He's like Superman AND Lex Luthor.
He's saving you, or he's killing you, or he's saving you while killing you or killing you while saving you.
Aikman said it best when he espoused the theory that Rex is making fundamental mistakes. I don't know how this guy still has the top spot. Several of the wins last year were pulled straight out of thin air in my opinion, mostly due to the actions of an individual player recovering the ball or Hester's runbacks.
Ah, hurry Sept. 9, Mama needs her some real NFL. Pre-season just isn't enough to quench this thirst.

No kidding. Although it is nice to turn on the NFL Network any time of day and find a game going on. It's better than being stuck with golf or racing, which is about all I can find on TV on the weekends.
My Lions are saying all the right things this year. They seem to have the right attitude. They've won their first two preseason games. Jon Kitna looks sharp. But then, that always happens before they head into the toilet. Ah, hope springs eternal in the heart of a Lions fan! Maybe this year I won't have to get the paper bag out until December!

You got that right- Grossman is the one chink in the armor of an otherwise superior Bears team. Fantasy Football means picking players..changing lineups and seeing if your 10-12 players/Defense/Kicker beat your opponents...like your Running Back racking up 200 yards & 2 TDS the next week vs. your opponent's running back only getting 50 rushing yards & 0 TDS...
Pick em League is just seeing if you can pick which team wins...Like...."I think the Giants will beat the Eagles this week...!" or vice versa...

Alright, I knew the Colts would win tonight but I was still actually surprised when watching the opening game of the season. I can't believe the Saints secondary got tore up as bad as they did in that game. Obviously, this is Manning/Harrison/Wayne we're talking here so they can do damage even to a good secondary but I'm surprised they took New Orleans for that kind of ride.
Equally surprising is the Saints falling apart like that in the 4th quarter...

I thought the Philly/GB game would be pretty evenly matched, that was actually fun to watch since I'm not emotionally vested in either team. I figured GB would win since they were at home.
Disappointing would be the word I'd use for Chicago v. SD, come on people, ALL of the points were on turnovers?! ALL of them?! I think the Bears Offensive Coordinator needed a brisk slap upside his head. ("Let's run it up the middle. That didn't work, OK, how about running it up the middle. Nothing? All right try this on for size, run it up the middle!")
Don't worry Trek, I'm sure Rex Luthor will probably make an appearance soon and hopefully be torn apart by foaming at the mouth die hards - or maybe the turf at the first dome game will do it for us. But for once it wasn't about him pooching it up too much.
Buffalo may be in serious trouble as they now have Dick Juran. (sp?) Chicago had him for a while, we call those the "Sucks Almost As Much as Wannstedt" years.
I didn't get to see any of the Monday night action, anyone have any comments?

09-12-2007, 12:56 AM
Sure..
Not sure why the Niners gameplan was so conservative but they should have gave Alex Smith some more aggressive play calls. I understand that Arizona's defense was playing better then usual but 3 runs up the middle in top of the 4th quarter for 2 consecutive drives make little to no sense...They weren't even running to open up the pass game as is the normal strategy.
It was just way too conservative a game plan.
In the end, Alex Smith put the team on his shoulders and carried their asses to the endzone in the last two minutes but it should have never come down to that..

Any thoughts about the Pats getting caught cheating?
Honestly, I don't really care. Pats are good, and I really don't know how much they could benefit by trying to read signals.
DarkJedi
09-15-2007, 09:16 PM
I think ESPN and various media outlets are jumping on this story like the normal sharks they are all for the benefit of ratings...which is usually the case. They're making the Pats to be sneaky villains because it makes an engaging story after so many years of them on top. First, they prop them on the pedestal and now, they want to tear that pedestal down...They know full well that everyone probably tries to cheat, it's just a matter of getting caught with your hands in the cookie jar as is the case with the Pats right now.
Understand, I'm not talking "conspiracy" theories here when I stated earlier that ESPN and media outlets are making the Pats to be the villain. It's just a really engaging story..and we know media wants the "top to fall" after a fashion because it makes a really good story.
The NFL has become a booming business and media outlets would love to tear it a new hole and reveal weakness all for great ratings..The very same thing happened after Baseball came into the spotlight. Yes, Baseball Players have been cheating for decades but when they were gaining such a following after the homerun era became known, ESPN and various outlets literally jumped at the chance to tear them down and reveal themselves...Even now, there is still a blind eye towards Baseball from media outlets. While the outlets focus on "homeruns" and people like Bonds, they still ignore the fact about cheating in Baseball for decades...They still refuse to admit that "pitchers" may have used the drugs also. When a pitcher gets caught, then they(ESPN and Co.) will start focusing on pitchers because that will be the engaging story at that time...
The same will be true for the NFL one day very soon. Media wants a good story and this makes a good story...an engaging story....
Yes, no matter how idealistic it is to believe otherwise, most (if not all) teams cheat in one way or another. Whether it's "sanctioned" by the owner/coach or not, every game has some form of cheating when those guys line up at the ball line.
Patriots were caught here..As you see NFL and NE are already trying to spin this ...and that spin may involve the truth...i.e "They caught them early into the game!!!".
That's the spin factor at work there. Of course, this is the Jets here so they'd probably beat them at any rate..but spin is spin.
I know when I turn on my NFL ticket and watch my Chiefs, I know there will be cheating. That's not so much my own cynical mind at work so much as the theory that in any sport...Winners>>>Losers. Sports is mainly about winning. Loyalty to our teams keeps us attached even if they're losing but media and advertising revenue wants winners first and foremost. They'll exploit the hell out of winners and when there is no more story to tell, they'll switch and talk smack about those winners years later for another story. The Pats are the latest example. I'm sure the same thing would happen years from now on the Colts if they took take over the top spot for the next few years. As soon as they become ready, the media will look to tear holes into the phenomenon..
While I don't particularly like the Patriots, I do acknowledge what they've done. I acknowledge that my jealousy for their SB rings causes me,... said jealousy. The last time the Chiefs were in the true spotlight was when the NFL was beginning. I have the same feelings towards the Patriots as I do with the Broncos..division rival or not. I have to face the facts that Elway and Terrell Davis lead the Broncos to a Ring in the past two decades while my team has endured playoff loss after playoff loss..."Marty, I'm looking at you..."....But I acknowledge the Broncos getting the ring in the same way as the Patriots getting the rings....in the same context that the Colts finally got their rings last year.
Everyone cheats, pessimistic or not...It's the one who gets caught which gets punished but the NFL really doesn't care as long as they don't get caught. ESPN and media outlets will continue making this into a bigger story for their own ratings...but we shouldn't be blindsided enough to realize that our own teams cheat in the games...or any chance they can if they know they won't get caught.

Major props to Gore for showing up today and showing up today. I don't think anyone would have been upset if he took the week off to deal with his mother's death and funeral arrangements but you'd never know the guy had lost someone close if it hadn't been mentioned. He's got game!
Hopefully the offense will really gel and capitalize on this now.

Yeah, sicks...But what the hell is up with the play calling at the end of the game. I'm excited they've started the season 2-0 ...but are they purposely trying to give Niner fans heart attacks? I mean, wtf was up with them giving 2:00s to go at their home stadium when the lead was only 1 point? Running 3 plays up the middle like that instead of a safe screen pass and going for at least 1st down to seal the victory?
lol Not to mention calling a time out when their kicker was running out of the field..the kicker had only 10 seconds to line up for a 56 yard fieldgoal..and they had no timeouts yet. What happens? The Niners called a time out!!
My bro in law looked ready to keel over from either pain, frustration or anger at this point..

Well, the Lions are 2-0. They and Vikings were fighting over who should let the other win. "You take the ball." "No, you take the ball." "Here, YOU take the ball." The Lions, being polite hosts, finally let the Vikings give the game away.
Still, I can't remember the last time they even won two games in a row. And Mr. Neglet made the remark that Jon Kitna is the first Lions quarterback in a long time who actually looks like he wants to win. Now if they could only develop a leetle bit of a running game, the offense could be unstoppable.
As for the Pats, I think the "cheating" story is overblown. They still had to go out and play the games and execute their plan; I don't see how stealing signals would help them that much. Still, they were caught cheating against the Lions last year. How low is that?

While I am happy my Boys are 2-0, I am still worried about their apparent inability to get to the QB. Their DBs aren't that great, and they seem to be living on borrowed time. Against Wrecks Grossman/Tavarius Jackson that's ok, but I can see Brady or McNabb torching them.
Biggest surprise? Houston. 2-0 is shocking enough, but I read that their 34 points was a franchise record. That's sad.

Steelers 2-0! YEAH!
I just can't wait till we play an actual good team. Our defense has only allowed 10 points so far. We held the Browns to 7 points, and then the Browns go score all over Cinci, granted it was a two-way scorefest. Does that mean we'll be able to run up the score on the Bengals when we play 'em. Hopefully, and maybe we'll even be able to shut down Palmer too.
I felt really, really bad for Buffalo yesterday. Their team is just falling apart with injuries. I was impressed that they managed to keep us to four field goals early on.
My picks this week were a bit better, but I'm still in last place :( My fantasy teams didn't do very well either. My WoW guild league I lost like 129-60, but of course the person I was facing off against happened to have Palmer and his ridiculous 6 TDs and 400 yards passing. I came in last place in my office pool with only 6 correct choices (7 if the Eagles win).
But at least the Steelers are doing well.

I agree 100% with you, DJ. They are starting to drive me nuts with the last-minute theatrics and leaving the door open for their opponent. What bugs me more, though, is that the intensity and talent they need to go to the playoffs is there but they never show it (minus Gore) except in the last 3-5 minutes of the game so far. Only 2 games, I know, so it's only anecdotal at this point but anecdotal has a tendency to turn into empirical trend in the NFL very quickly.
They're a talented team and it shows -- no way they would have beaten both the AZ and STL of 2007 with the 2006 team... in fact they may have lost both by a TD or more -- but this 2nd-gear offense isn't going to hold up much deeper into their schedule. Only 6 of 16 games are against division rivals and they've already played 2 of those games. By the end of 4 games, they will have played 3 of their division contests. Next week is @ Pittsburgh and 2 weeks down is vs. Seattle. Pittsburgh is still a legit force in the league even if they aren't the #1 or #2 team in the AFC. They can make or break teams on the bubble. Seattle is a team I'm still not certain the Niners have the psychological fortitude to beat on talent alone and not let the past bug them.
If they'd just play the first 55 minutes like they have been playing the last 5, I think they've got a legit shot at beating any team they play this year. If they keep up this 5 minute game crap, they're going to get walked on by Pittsburg, Seattle and New Orleans, at least, and probably the Giants as well. This kind of play won't fly against better teams during the regular season and will amount to a quick exit from the playoffs if they manage to get in which would probably be on the basis of winning their division.

Man, that's why I'm getting frustrated at the Niners right now. They have so much bloody potential with Alex Smith whose already proven himself to be capable...
I think the new Offensive coordinator is being a little too gunshy because they have no true #1 WR right now..nobody that can get seperation. That doesn't mean ignore Battle though because from what I've seen of Battle, he's one of my favorite players on the team. The man is a former QB himself, he blocks, he catches nearly everyone thrown his way...He's a team player who does what it takes. If Battle can't get enough seperation like a Moss or TO..or any other true #1 WR, then get some plays which are designed to his strengths in there..Rather then having him become a 50 yard a game player as he's been the last two games.
That's a worrisome facet about the first two games. It won't take defensive coaches long to realize if they cancel out Gore and Battle, they'll stop the Niners.
Fact: Through two games, Alex Smith doesn't have ONE passing TD. Not one. This type of one dimensional plan will have future defensive coordinators ripping a new one into them.
Some more aggressive play calling is needed and Nolan and Co. need to get to it.
Not the current "wait till the last moment" bs which has Niner fans reeling in frustration & anger.
Alex Smith has proven already he's capable of putting the team on his shoulders and marching down the field in pressure situations. It's time the coaches let him do that same thing WITHOUT the pressure...i.e start letting him take control earlier in the game..not the damn 2 minute drill time.
lol You can hear my frustration..
They have so much bloody potential but this conversative game calling is driving me up the wall.

Actually Omi, I think Dallas would do OK next to Philly. Whatever McNabb had, it's gone. As for what Dallas can do D-wise, I haven't seen them play yet this year to know. But hey, a turnover is a turnover, screw the QB, get the BALL.

Two more black QBS have chimed in after McNabb had his fit to the media this week..Vince Young's comment had me laughing..
Jason Campbell: Early in my career in college, I felt like people looked at me differently and expected a lot more," said Campbell, the Washington Redskins' starter since November. "I felt I had to do a little extra. At that point, I did feel that way. I don't feel that way now in the NFL."

"It's the hardest position to play in professional sports, and you get graded differently than any other position on the field. Nine times out of 10 the ball is in your hands, so everybody is watching you. Since you're in the spotlight, the mistakes get recognized. You need thick skin and a short memory."

Apparently, Fox Sports has turned me into Pavlov's dog this season.
I would hear that "doo doo dah, doo doo ding" noise and no matter where I was in the house I would automatically look at the TV because that meant they were going to show the scores for all the games.
Now, Fox shows the scores constantly in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
But they still use the "doo doo dah, doo doo ding" to promote upcoming games, or play Fantasy Football, or whatever else they want to hype.

I assume we're talking about your local Fox Sports (Region) channel here. I know they play that ding quite a lot.
Another good channel is Epsn News..they have the constant updates but they don't have a constant theme sound. Then again, you'll have to hear their talking heads about every single sport going on..
I've never kept it on very long on the NFL channel itself..(outside of my Ticket channels)..They have a ticker going at the bottom, right? Wonder what sound effects they have going on..

I'm just keeping up my smacktalk comment from last week. I wrote "Damn you, McNabb" for being a failure and causing my loss in Fantasy..
He's on the "can't cut list" so I just delegated him down to the Bench until I can.
Then, yesterday, he does that?
I should change "Damn you, McNabb" to "Fuck off, McNabb"...At least, I got 3 TDs from Brian Westbrook and I won the week in Fantasy..I still won't be starting the bastard.
In fact, I probably have too many QBS and RBs on my roster. Most of my bench consist of them.
Oh and I got totally nailed yesterday on our Fantasy Pick Em League...Very bad day. There goes my second place standings. Bring on next week.

I heard a truly diabolical rumor first thing yesterday morning.
A Daily Herald sports reporter was on the early AM news on ABC said he thought Grossman's contract, due to expire at the end of the season, would NOT be renewed in favor of picking up a new, experienced QB....Donovan McNabb.
Now before Trek throws himself out a window, personally, I think it is just that, a rumor.
Chicago teams historically don't shell out for big name guys. We like to pick them up BEFORE they get big, and get them for cheap - at least at first.
Personally, I'm more worried about the 4 pro bowlers that got injured in the last one. I can't worry about stuff that hasn't or may not happen at all, at least in the NFL.

The Falcons are 0-3 and going nowhere but it doesn't just have to be the Falcons- other teams are hurting at the QB position (Delhomme seems to be nursing an injury at Carolina, Green is ineffective in Miami and the season is still young so that means plenty of opportunities to trade that ****).

I'll always love Brian Griese, after he led Michigan to the national title in 1997. I'd like to see him play well, but still lose to Detroit, because I'm just a hopeless fan when it comes to the Lions. And because it's just like them to lay a turd like the game against the Eagles and then beat a playoff team the next game. (Plus, da Bears' defense is hampered by injury and the Lions will get their passing yards.)

This is a weird season already. Out of last year's playoff teams, only New England, Indy, Dallas, and Seattle are above .500. Instead we've got Green Bay undefeated, and Detroit and Tampa Bay at 3-1.
And I told you Detroit would beat Chicago this week. But next week they'll probably lose because they're at the Redskins and they haven't won there in something like 20 years.

I contend that the Cardinals had an unfair advantage against us this week. Whisenhunt, being our old offensive coordinator, knew our offense too well and probably our defense as well. Plus, no Hines Ward and Polamalu out a good bit of the game did not help matters. I know, I know...excuses excuses. :p
On the bright side, Ben looked really great moving the ball down the field for the touchdown late in the game. And Santonio Holmes played extremely well in Ward's place.
And holy shit, I like the Eagles, but they got very much OWNED last night, especially the offensive line. How many times did McNabb get sacked? 10? 11? The defense was literally wallking all over the o-line.

I watched part of the Pats/Cowboys game, but with Tom Brady playing like he came down from Mt. Olympus, it seemed a foregone conclusion.

Of course I watched the game. I was screwing around playing a game on my laptop, so I was only half watching. I remember seeing them go up 28-24 in the 3rd, and then I looked up and it was 41-28. Apparently I wasn't paying as close attention as I thought. :headscratch:
Do I think the Boys could have beaten the Pats? Sure, if they played a perfect game. They didn't and for some reason the coach decided to stop the run (Like that's the Pat's strength) instead of concentrating on the pass. Then again, you have to admit that Moss/Stallworth/Welker can and will kill you. They did get to Brady more than he's been hit this season, and that's good.
All in all, a loss, but not a back breaker. Of course, if they go and drop the next 3 games, then there might be a suicide watch needed.
I watched the LSU/UK game also. I love watching the top teams lose. Now if only my Buckeyes can avoid the Upset bug that's going around the NCAA.

Just remember TV. As much as I love them, it was still just the Ravens. Karmic retribution for last year. That's it.
Ike Taylor still needs to come up with those interceptions and Willie needs to learn that he can't go up the middle unless there is a hole the size of the Fort Pitt Tunnels for him to use. He's better at running the end and using his speed and blockers to keep the lanes open. Davenport is your bruiser.
Although on the whole. Ben had a phenomenal game. 5 TD passes. Constantly in motion shaking off the sack at every given turn and as Billy Hillgrove said, Silverback Security was on the job. Harrison's first tackle looked like the body slam he put on that Cleveland fan awhile back.

11-12-2007, 06:12 AM
Holy Come From Behind, Batman! Man, who would have thought the Brownies would be formidable? But, hey, I will give credit where credit is due. Roethlisberger had another amazing game throwing his body in harms way for two important plays that suceeded in a 30yd run for a TD and a 10yrd run completing a 3rd down conversion that set up Heath Miller for another touchdown.
Plus, both coaches made errors in judgement challenging plays that were pretty clear cut. However, Romeo Crennel added insult to injury by calling time out to decide whether or not to challenge Miller's TD catch resulting in a loss of a challenge and another time out.
IMO Cleveland should have at least been able to tie the game if Crennel had not called the first timeout and just challenged the call to start. An additional timeout in the pocket would have given the Browns an opportunity to safely move the chains further into Steeler territory to allow Dawson a more comfortable attempt at a FG to send the game into overtime.
But....that is why they are the Browns and we are alone at the top of the AFC North looking at a three game stretch against teams who should prove no significant threat.
Jets (1-8)
Dolphins (0-9) looking to be the Anti 73 Dolphins
Bengals (3-6)
Then it's on to New England in Foxboro which I hope will give the Pats their first loss of the season. The second will hopefully be in Pittsburgh during the playoffs.

Thankfully, Westbrook saved my ass against you but they announced Clark's concussion the night before (supposedly) and I never heard about it until Sunday afternoon. Same deal for Alexander. I don't buy that he was really injured..Just think they did that because he was struggling.
It was certainly going through my head Monday night because your Burleson was playing while Alexander was sitting out.
Still, Westbrook did save my ass for the matchup.
McNabb supposedly threw 4 TDs too and I had him on the bench. He's staying on the bench or I'm trading him to someone who wants him..This week, he's going up against Miami and I'm STILL not starting him. I don't trust McNabb..He's burned me too often.

Yeah, but who has tiebreaker victories over the Lions? The Cards, the Giants, the Eagles, the Redskins. If they can win one of these last four games, I'll be amazed.

I wouldn't worry about my Chiefs. They'll roll over and play dead. Keep that draft pick high...
Watching them lose these games in Arrowhead has been a bit frustrating for me. Are you playing Green Bay in the last game of the year? I haven't checked the schedule but if you are, it's likely GB will have locked up the 2nd seed by then. They'll start Favre to keep his record but I doubt they'll keep the starters in if they know they can't move up or down a playoff seed. It may be a winnable game, depending on their outlook at that time.
You'll definitely beat my Chiefs. *Roll over! Good boys!*

I don't really care about the Falcons or Arkansas but this is the latest NFL hot story and the Falcon players are hurt...Something I sorta understand. A headcoach quitting them 13 games into the season in his first year of a five year contract??. Ugh...
Here's the details:
ATLANTA (AP) -- Bobby Petrino resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach on Tuesday, a person within the league told The Associated Press. He lasted only 13 games with the NFL team.
Petrino left Louisville to become Falcons coach in January for a five-year, $24 million contract, largely because Atlanta felt he could help star quarterback Michael Vick reach his full potential.
A few months later, Vick came under investigation for a grisly dogfighting operation that eventually led him to plead guilty to federal charges. He was sentenced Monday to 23 months in prison without ever taking a snap for Petrino.
The person familiar with Petrino's decision requested anonymity because the team has not yet announced it. There was immediate speculation he had quit to take a college job, with Arkansas among the schools seeking a coach.
Arkansas has been looking for two weeks for a coach to replace Houston Nutt, who resigned after a tumultuous season and hours later took the Mississippi job.
After losing Vick, Petrino tried three other starting quarterbacks without success. The Falcons are 3-10 and assured of the 32nd losing season in their 42-year history.
The resignation of Petrino was another jarring blow to the Falcons, who dealt with Vick's legal troubles since the first day of training camp, when a plane flew overhead pulling a sign that said: "New Team Name? Dog Killers?"
Petrino assembled one of college football's highest-scoring offenses at Louisville, but the Falcons were anemic without Vick. They also were plagued by injuries on the offensive line, which forced them to start two players who weren't even drafted out of college.
Just hours after Vick's sentencing in Richmond, Va., Atlanta took its fourth straight double-digit loss, 34-14 to the New Orleans Saints.
"Not a good day," Petrino said afterward.
Here's the Falcon Reactions:
"We kept hearing rumors and stuff like that," running back Warrick Dunn said. "It got to the point where guys really didn't care if he left or not. But the way he decided to leave, to me, was just not right."
Falcons owner Arthur Blank sounded as though he had just been stabbed in the back. He got a call late last week from Dallas owner Jerry Jones, an Arkansas alumnus, to say the school was interested in talking to Petrino about its coaching vacancy.
Blank said he told Jones the Falcons had no intention of letting the Razorbacks speak with their coach, and general manager Rich McKay confirmed that position in a follow-up call with Jones.
That was followed by a series of meetings over the weekend in which Petrino laid out some of his concerns, and the Falcons thought they had addressed them all. In fact, Blank said he met again with the coach on Monday, just hours before Atlanta's 34-14 loss to the New Orleans Saints, to make sure he wasn't planning to leave.
"He stood up, we shook hands and he said, 'You have a head coach,' " Blank said.
Twenty-four hours later, Petrino submitted his resignation, hopped on a plane to Arkansas and signed a deal as Razorbacks coach.
All he left behind for the players was that letter.
Safety Lawyer Milloy had a copy of it taped above his locker, with a red "X" through Petrino's words and the player's own assessment written in: "Coward."
"I feel like I've been sleeping with the enemy the past eight months," Milloy said.
The Falcons were particularly upset about Petrino's jovial demeanor at his first news conference in Arkansas, where he even participated in the school's "calling the hogs" cheer. It was the first time any of the players could remember him smiling.
"That's what I think brought up the anger, to have him talk about family, about team and about commitment, and then to come in here and have a form letter at your locker," quarterback Joey Harrington said. "That's not how a man acts. That's how a coward acts."
Defensive end Jamal Anderson, the Falcons' first-round pick from Arkansas, was asked what he would tell his alma mater about their new coach.
"One word: Disloyal," Anderson replied.

That's pretty cold alright. He should have at least finished out the season with Atlanta. It's not like there would be any massive change to Arkansas' standings - their season is over, whereas Atlanta still has more than a month left of ball to play.
I liked Atlanta at the beginning of last year's season, I thought they had some potential. It all fell apart somewhere around week 8 or 9, and I thought part of the reason could be discipline problems within the team itself; there seemed to be a lot of finger pointing among the players and amateur theatrics on the field. Just my impressions, mind you, I didn't do any following up or research on the team itself.
Still this sort of behavior out of a head coach makes me think one of two things: either the team owners/organization are ogres to work for, and the environment is so oppressive it's either leave and be sane or stay and go crazy. Or like the one player said Petrino is a coward alright, a truly special type of rat-headed coward. All I know is I wouldn't have let my team down with so many weeks left to play. But then, I have honor, and am used to working for ogres (and lesser demons too).
Just my $.02
Thanks for posting this DJ.

Yeah, this was an extremely shitty way to go. Be a man, finish out the year, and then take a new job. It's bad enough he left before the end of the season, but right after a loss? Asstard.
I read somewhere that he's signed 15yrs of contracts in his past 2 jobs, and hasn't worked a full year on either. What a fuckface.
