yes, I know it's not the most popular sport, but we have several Canuckleheads and some northern people here so someone besides me must care.
NHL Playoffs start tonight! (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2007/index)
Obviously, I am rooting for my Dallas Stars, but I admit Detroit again looks like a favorite.

I think the Red Wings are pissed off about last year's early exit. I think they'll at least make the conference finals, if not the Cup finals.

Freaking 4OT game. I stayed up until 2am local to watch, but I couldn't keep watching. AND they lost.

That's why, unless it's a deciding game in a series, I always go to bed. Because if they lose, I don't wanna see it. And if they win, I get to see them play the next game. Being sleep-deprived just sucks.

Welp, after digging themselves out of a 3-1 hole, the Stars just couldn't come up with one more miracle. They've been eliminated. It's too bad, since they would have been up against the DeadThings if they advanced.

Too bad about the Stars. (Their goalie, Marty Turco, is a former Wolverine.) I'm sure the Wings would've preferred to play Dallas instead of the Sharks, which looks like a really tough matchup. I hope they rise to the occasion.

Sadly my Pens got knocked out in 5 games by the more experience Senators. :(
I haven't decided who I'm going to be rooting for now.

Hockey talk, WTF?
Don't worry about the Pens. If they ice this same team for the next couple of seasons, cups will come back to Pittsburg. They are sooo young and speedy. The first two lines have some of the best hands in the game right now. All they need is time. And another vet on the bench cuz Recchi is hanging it up very soon.
I was in Ottawa last week and had a chance to see game 7 of this series. Box seats thru a vendor from work. It wasn't needed, obviously. But damn, would've been fun. I'd be fall down drunk on $9 beer.
Anyway................
GO SENS!

Sharks are up 2-1 against Detroit.
Hopefully Wilson (Shark's coach) will keep whipping the boys into the finals. I swear, I've never seen a coach actually be upset with his team after they won until I saw Wilson at the press conference after Game 1.

Yeah, it's Wilson's pissed-off attitude that has taken the Sharks to the second round. And Nabokov's superior net-minding. The Wings we're all over them in game one despite coming out on the losing end and I think that's what set Wilson off. His team was outshot 34-19, which is huge. On top of that, San Jose skaters had to block like another 18 shots in front of the net. Way to much offense in their own end. No wonder he had a breakdown.
In other news....
My Senators go up 2-1 against NJ! I was expecting some kind of controversy with this game, and I got it. The nudge Fisher gave Brodeur was questionable, but the refs had to look away to even up the series for that bad goal in game two. At least they're being consistently inconsistent.

Dammit!! Dammit!! Dammit!!
A 2-0 lead, and the Sharks lose in OT 3-2 to tie up the series.
Honestly, I'm getting to the point where I'm hoping that Detroit scores the first goal in every game just so that the Sharks get off their asses and play offensively.

Vancouver (my team) just couldn't pull it together against Anaheim. We proved we could match them after a horrible first game, but then quickly proved that we forgot how to play hockey...
I can't be that upset though...
1) I won $20. I said Ducks in 5.
2) My girlfriend is going to be needlessly upset and in need of comfort.
3) I can get home from work (I work next to the rink and get off at about the same time the game does)

Well my Rangers are out. The little (very little) interest I had in the NHL playoffs is now gone!

The Sabres are all but done.
I expected the series to go 5 or 6 games. Instead Buffalo is getting their asses handed to them. They are completely shut down. Sluggish and just horrible on special teams. Lindy Ruff is going to take a head cramp and die.
I didn't see this coming.

Well, I think the Wings have the momentum in their series against the Ducks. But the longer this series lasts, and even if they make it into the Finals, they have a serious disadvantage: they've had to travel to the west coast for every single series. I saw a stat for Game 3 that they had traveled over 16,000 miles during the playoffs already. Add another 3K for the return to Detroit for Game 5, and if there's a game 6, add another 6K.
That hardly seems fair. But the Red Wings have been defying expectations so far this playoff season--they seem to running on pure will at times. If they do get to the Finals, I expect them to put up a good fight. Plus, they won't have to travel so far, maybe they'll find it relaxing in contrast.

Pronger was suspended one game and will be sitting out game four so pressure is on Detroit to put a strangle hold on this series. The hit, which was a vicious run at Holmstrom's head, was textbook intent to injure and from behind no less. It should have warranted a muti-game suspension, but this is what happens when a Norris trophy winner gets in trouble with the league -- nothing.
I found a clip. Hitting from behind, elbowing, and intent to injure in a span of 3 seconds.

I wonder if you canuckleheads are going nuts realizing that the last 3 cups have been won by Anaheim, Carolina and Tampa?

Nuts? Nah. We're just all sobbing in our far superior Canadian beer. :Smirk:
But hey, the Blackberry guy is trying to buy the Nashville Predators. If successful, they figure he'll move the team back to Canada. This is a good thing as I have a frightening mental image of the Stanley Cup being used as a spittoon in Tennesee.

Scott Niedermayer had a SWEET beard by the end of the playoffs. Even though the Senators were really, really good this year, I was rooting for the Ducks, mainly because it still stung to be eliminated in the first round by the Sens.
The last game was pretty exciting, though it was the only one of the finals that I got to see.

I'll live. My team went further this season than ever before. I watched them play in person twice. They managed to beat the Leafs pretty near every time they faced 'em, which btw, means a hell of a lot in my end of the world.
It's little consolation for a Cup thou, but what are ya gonna do?
*Wish to the Gods for Pronger to fracture his femur in a horrible golfing accident*
