The latest JAMES BOND, actor Daniel Craig, has told the Daily Express that the producers would like more humor interjected into the next Bond film (currently titled BOND 22). Craig re-invented the 007 character in last year's CASINO ROYALE with a tougher grittier look and feel but that doesn't say the next movie will be as serious.

"They [the producers] just want more gags. The next one’s going to be a lot funnier. Octopussy and Pussy Galore style gags. They’re all great names – but that’s the thing, the Bond jokes will be flipped on their heads.”

The Cheshire-born actor is keen to make Bond his own creation and that will apparently mean showing a softer, less macho side to the character.

“Bond is supposedly the most male moment [in film] but to me he’s never been macho. That Bond is something that Sean Connery created in Dr No,” he says.

“I don’t know Sean but I wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley – he was a big strong guy and he had a big male presence about him.

“Everybody was in an uproar when he was going to be James Bond. He got flak because he was basically an Edinburgh bricklayer. And everyone who read the books thought how can he possibly do it? But he created a style that was unique and kind of sexy.”

Not that Daniel wants to imitate Connery or any other preceding Bond, adding: “There’s no point in trying to compete with every Bond that came before. You manage to make it your own.”

I've heard before that the Daily Express isn't that trustworthy...So perhaps they took Craig and quoted him out of context. Who knows really...

The Daily Express is a Princess Diana obsessed rag with the WORST showbiz staff out of all the UK papers.

I also think DC will enjoy messing with Bond fans in the run up to Bond 22, after the "Craig Not Bond" people..... and then CR knocking it out of the park.

You give good blog !

However I am still worried. I don't think they necessarily know how to reign themselves in over at Eon.

Y'know, it's all wait and see, but after CR, my optimism is set to STUN.

I got THE FEAR reading this one... should have remembered that any Bond news this early in the pre-production process that isn't an official confirmation from Eon is nothing to get worked up about.

After the critical and commercial success of Casino Royale only a complete nincompoop would think a return to the tone and style of A View to a Kill was in order.

So long as the humor is subtle, I can see it as a natural progression. Bond was dark and serious, but played around with the subtle one-liners, and hit rock-bottom at the end - the only way to go is 'up.'

But, subtlety is an absolute must. Bond winning the Aston Martin and adding, "Oh, and the valet ticket?" was subtle and very funny. As long as we're not talking slapstick physical comedy, I'm ok with it. (Fingers crossed)

Exactly. One of my favorite things about CR was the way they made the humor so subtle that it didn't take away from the tone of the movie. Loved his "You noticed" line to Vesper after her "perfectly formed ass" line.

I see one Keystone Kop or open-mouthed extra gawking at a stunt and I'm out of the theater.

Oh, who am I kidding, I'll stay to the end. But with a nod to Comic Book Guy, I will immediately be on the net registering my disgust on websites throughout the world. :)

They always, always drop the ball.

DAD - kick ass premise, great opening and then BAM.... all the worst excesses of 70's Bond all over the place and every single bit of goodwill the first half builds up gets used in about 10 minutes flat.

TWINE - human Bond, maybe falling in love again with a girl who reminds him of Tracey..... and she turns out to be the bad guy !!! Should have been all kinds of fantastic, and then they give us Denise Richards.

TND - Brosnan's best work as Bond, real sense of urgency, cracking pace. Allowed in the second half to descend into generic Hollywood action movie.

GE - almost there.... but just couldn't resist the hollowed out volcano type lair. I will almost give that a pass though, but not quite.

Not to be a smartass, but how did they "always, always drop the ball" in Casino Royale?

As per my earlier response, I put that down to CR being the first Bond on the new watch at Sony, Haggis' rewrite, Craig having some influence over how he wanted to play the character, external pressure after DAD and in the face of competition in the genre etc. etc.
