View Full Version : SPECULATION - the answer to Lost

Okay, had this thought at 3:00 while breastfeeding:
Locke was reading An Incidence at Owl Creek Ridge, which is a book about a man having a flashback of his entire life in the split second between life and death.
What if that's what's going on here? If every single person on that plane, their lives all eerily connected to each other's, is a second away from dying? If they all are still on the plane with about a second before the plane completely explodes and they're all dead? And they're all sharing the same seeing-my-life-flash-before-my-eyes moment? Mind you, it's strange that they're all seeing it together.
In the context of the format of the show, it makes sense. Every episode, we see a portion of one of the "survivor's" life flash before their eyes as he/she struggles to make sense of it all.
Maybe the Others are in a battle for the souls of the "survivors." This is a lot like the Purgatory theory, the only main exception being, they're not quite dead yet. (Say that in a Monty Python voice.)
I'd love your opinions on this, even if you think it's a stupid theory and that I'm just sleep-deprived because I've got a 4 month old!

Very interesting theory. I too have my best ideas while I'm breastfeeding.

I'm sorry. I know you said something that was intelligent and worthy of discussion, but I got stuck thinking about you with your boobies out.

Trust me. Boobies are not sexy when there's a baby attached to them. Ask Claire. You know she's GOT to be breastfeeding. Not like there's a supply of formula on the island.

Lemmetellya, Claire's boobies are double damn sexy, baby.
And so are yours, damnit.
My wife is currently breastfeeding our 3 week old son. I'm trying to think about Roseanne Barr. It helps a lot.

Mazel Tov, Jakester! Ask her if she's had any revelations about the meaning of Lost while she's feeding the little guy. And I'm waiting for some semi-serious discussion of my theory...

And this is why i could never keep a straightface in the buffy forums in CA and cinescape all those years....

Kah, I'm not sure if you were reading(or lurking at) the old Cinescape UBB software boards but sometime in the past, Jakester posted a link to a really stellar theory...probably one of the best ones out there, purely on research and speculation from a fan.
It's called the Ultimate Theory.
Here's the link to that:

I almost feel like posting a Spoiler warning(it's so good) but it is just a theory in the end.
This particular link was forwarded to quite a bit of Lost fans after Jake provided the link to it.....I know for a fact(my forward), it went through 3 downtown Continental building email systems and one floor on a Fbi branch in Virginia to any known Lost fans.
 It got passed around about as much as an old RPG World War II spoof, Boki boy posted last year.
I only started watching Lost this past summer in reruns, and I just made the switch from CA to Cine (I hate change, so sue me:ohwell: ), so I missed the old thread. I like the theory. I have to say, though.... Do we really think they put this much thought into this show? I understand that Lost is very deep and mysterious and strange, but honestly, are we maybe overthinking this? Or are we not thinking deep enough? I don't think any theory can be called a spoiler, since no one knows but the creators. They may not even know. They may be making this up as they go. I just hope they pick the pace back up and get the viewer's interest piqued, or we may never get all the answers we want. I believe they will have a season 3, but if they keep going like they have been this season, we may never get a 4. And wouldn't that suck?
I wonder if maybe the scientists were just trying to test a theory about brain activity and behavior when exposed to electromagnetism, but because of the results (as in the Others), they abandoned the experiment and the island.
Honestly, I understand that the world is a small place, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how they can make so many connections between the characters. I could maybe accept all the connections between people on the plane, but then to have Ecko's brother crashed on that island? I sometimes wonder if everything is a collosal joke, and the writers are trying to see how far out there they can get before people just give up guessing.
Hell, if I was the writers, I would probably be stealing some of the ideas from the theories above.
Maybe this is all a dream, and we all play a part? All the actors, the writers, the viewers? Maybe WE are the collective conscience? Maybe someday we'll all wake up in our own pod on the island? What if I'm right? What if we are all stuck in the Matrix?
lol. Sorry.
I have to say, Lost has only made me confused. And I am ok with that.

Possible spoilers!
Okay, here's my theory: We don't know who these people really are. We never saw the plane crash other than in flashbacks. How do we know they really crashed? My guess is that this is all one giant experiment, and that these 'flashbacks' have been implanted in people who (probably) volunteered for the experiment. This explains how everyone can be so interconnected in their past lives, how Locke is able to walk (a false memory that he wasn't able to), etc.
I think the Others are the staff members of the project, who perhaps went Lord of the Flies. The shark, polar bear, and horse can all be explained by the zoological hatch, and the reason QUARANTINE was writtin on the inside of the hatch is because the outside of the island itself is the zone where the experiment is being run, and to enter it (as Desmond did) would contaminate it.
What do y'all think?

I think the producers have said that the plane actually crashed, that the plane was intentionally crashed, and we will learn what caused it to do so this season.

I never trust producers. They are like sheep. They are going to take over!

The sheep are going to take over? There'll be some very scared Scotsmen, let me tell you.

Check out Entertainment Weekly this week it has some wild speculation on where this is all going. Very cool stuff.

Still sticking to my last-moments-of-life theory. Of course, when we DO find out what caused the plane to crash, this may (or may not) change. Time will tell...
