Hmmmm.......good Idea, lets see this is a tough one, cause to me 70's really set the tone for alot of modern Sci-fi blockbusters, so heres my picks
ALien (thats a gimmie, come on!)
Dawn of the Dead (cheese fest galore, but it was a awsome cheese fest!!)
Star Wars (dont' even have to say why)
Halloween (hands down one of the BEST slasher movies ever, and awsome music!)
Jaws (omg, would not go in my pool for months!!)
Dirty Harry ("you feeling lucky punk??" best line ever!)
Blazing Saddles (lol, i would laugh sooo hard at this one, omg great times)
The Godfather (i wanted to be a gangster after this one)
Rocky (come on, Eye of the Tiger makes me want to kick some ass!)
Taxi Driver (messes with your mind, and ole Robert ROCKED THIS ONE)
but I have to ask this one, no Planet of the Apes???? come on man, are you some kind of Damn Dirty Ape???......lol, and Logans Run!!!, tsk tsk tsk, your pending wedding has softed your wits me lad, but thats ok I forgive you.....lol, j/k

Out of those 20 picks, these are my ten favorites of the group...
Halloween
Alien
Star Wars
Dawn of the Dead
Dirty Harry
Jaws
The Dear Hunter
The Exorcist
The Godfather
Taxi Driver
I won't mention all the movies you missed. Whitetemplar pointed some out but I could think of quite a few more selections...Still, that's not what you asked...You gave 20 options and I selected from that group. :D

Hehe, it was hard to narrow down the selection to 20, but I felt 15 was to little and 30 to much...I might have done 25 but for the most part I am happy. I went to a couple of different websites and did a tally of all the movies and to believe it or not, these 20 were the most voted or mentioned....

lol, yah we could sit here forever picking good 70's flicks........but Jedi, I have to ask, why Deer Hunter?.......that movie just put me in a down mood whenever I saw it, to the point where I would make a point to avoid it.......I don't know, im a escapist, when I watch something, I for the most part don't want gritty bleak tales of post war problems.......lol

Heh, if you'll notice most of my list is escapism entertainment as you like... :)
But I had Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now staring me in the face and wanted to choose which one out of the two I prefer more...I'd say Deer Hunter because it gave a gritty reality for post war vets.

The Deer Hunter is a very good movie, but watching more then once every 3 years puts me in a down mood, for sure.
Perfect example: The Passion Of The Christ. I thought it was a very good movie, but I have not watched it since it came out.

For me, the list starts with Jaws, ends with Star Wars and has Superman : The Motion Picture in the middle.
But I have all the depth of a puddle.

I'm having a real wave of nostalgia here. I spent my formative years lazing on a couch in front of movies from the 70's and the early 80's. My folks were big-time horror buffs, which of course meant that I'd be watching a hell of a lot of shit. Once in a while though, I’d discover a real campy gem. I clearly remember my first viewings of The Wicker Man and The Towering Inferno and the endless number of sleepless nights they helped spawn. Goddamn, I think I slept in my parents’ room for 14 years. Anyway, my taste in film has expanded, somewhat, and I've managed to watch a few 70's movies that I think are rather extraordinary. My list includes '70's canon and some other stuff that I think is worth mentioning.
In no particular order....
Holy Grail
The Exorcist
Star Wars
The Wicker Man
Dog Day Afternoon
Midnight Express
The Deer Hunter
Marathon Man
Deliverance
Jaws
The Omen
High Plains Drifter
Watership Down

Debbie Does Dallas
Deep Throat
A Clockwork Orange
Alien
Jaws
Rocky
Star Wars
Holy Grail
Godfather
Taxi Driver
It was ET. Close Encounters was the same year as Star Wars: 1977.
