Those of you I chat to "off-forum" will know what I sometimes get involved with for a living. Just read about this in the office. An outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has just been confirmed by the WHO.
In Kasai province at least 166 people have died plus there are 372 other cases so far.
Containment porocedures are in place via WHO and Medecins sans Frontieres.
An emergency response team of clinicians, water and sanitation experts and logisticians is on the way to organise clinical care and establish appropriate isolation facilities. WHO has also requested additional support from the global outbreak alert and response network. So far Gabon, Canada and the US will share the analysis.
They say there could be a "possible concurrent outbreak of another etiology" as three months ago people started falling sick from a mystery virus in several villages around Kananga, the capital of West Kasai region.
Despite what the movies and fiction might say the mortality rate is usually around 60% rather than 99%, however it is pretty much untreatable and that average death rate is usually only due to viral burn-out. Suffice it to say, should an infected person manage to get onto a plane that is heading to a major hub airport, and get there, it would cause a bit of a flap !
