Okay so here's my story. It's been a fun day. Last night was even better.
My part of NY got a freak band of Thunderstorms last night that blew through my area in a matter of about 5 minutes, but it was nasty.
Mrs K and I are relaxing, taking it easy and round about 10:30 there is a crack boom thunder rumble and my house (this is the best term I can come up with) lurches a touch, from a 70 something mile per hour wind gust. And it wasn't just alike a little mini gust of wind. It was a big, honking, sustained blast, I swear it must have lasted like 5 minutes.
So the wind lets go and we hear this massive Hrrrummmphhh type sound.
Trees. Good Christ.
So then we're going around the house, window to window to figure out what fell and where. Turned out it's this piece of shiznit.

Doesn't look like much, I know, but that little gem is a 60 ft elm. That branch is about a foot and a half thick and it is, as we speak laying on top of my neighbor's house. This pic was taken from my second floor window.
I don't know how it is where you are, but here in these parts, if it's on your proerty it's your problem. Sure it's my tree but since I didn't intentionally put the branch there, not my fault, not my problem.
Except that I like these folks. I have young ones running around, they have a few carpet rats too and I want the thing done asap.
The way it's set, it would just take another good wind gust to get the thing sliding down and causing a lot more harm. So I get some tree guys out here this morning and the first two say "Have you talked to the owner of this house?"
No. It's a rental. And none of the tenants speak English, so, no.
"Well, I can't get up there until he calls his insurance and gives me the go ahead."
For the love of Pete.
So I track the guy down and he starts playing dumb, Oh I have to call my insurance? Jees, uh, maybe I can get one of the tenants to clean it up. No, it weighs about a ton and will kill someone.
So in the course of this conversation a 3rd tree guy shows up and says, all right, $300 lets get this guys out of here. He's got the boom truck and everything.
Wait, haven't the word from the homeowner and frankly this isn't my problem. But now tree guy is gone. And Mr Landlord want's to take advantage of my good will in setting this shit up.
So 3 more conversations later and I have finally gotten the guy to agree to pay for half of it since it's still technically connected to the tree on my property and since there's clearly a large black spot where the thing had been rotting anyway. He is obviously NOT going to call his insurance company.
And the tree guys can't get here until Friday.
