SCI FI Channel and BBC Worldwide Americas announced today a major licensing deal for the first series of the latest Doctor Who adventures.
The 13-part drama is about a mysterious time-travelling adventurer known simply as "The Doctor" (Christopher Eccleston) and his companion, Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). The Doctor and Rose risk death and danger, battling aliens and monsters.
The deal, brokered by Lisa Hofer, Director Co-Production & Sales, BBC Worldwide Americas, grants SCI FI Channel the first run rights for series one with an option for series two. The award-winning series will premiere on SCI FI beginning in March, airing Friday nights at 9.00pm.
Russell T Davies, Head Writer and Executive Producer told us: "The Doctor's made all sorts of journeys in Time and Space, but this is one of his most exciting yet! I'm a huge fan of the SCI FI Channel, and I'm delighted that Doctor Who is appearing on a channel that supports and enhances the entire genre."
"With its rich history of imaginative storytelling, Doctor Who is a true sci-fi classic," stated Thomas P. Vitale, SCI FI's Senior Vice President, Programming & Original Movies. "We're excited to add the show to our lineup."
Commenting on the deal Candace Carlisle, Senior Vice President, BBC Worldwide Americas, said: “The new production has fantastic storylines and production values and has already gained an iconic status around the world. SCI FI Channel is the perfect home for the show and will introduce Doctor Who to a whole new generation of fans in the US.”
In addition, BBC Video has moved the US release date of the DVD from February 2006 to July 4, 2006 to capitalize on the exposure from the TV broadcast. As part of the deal, BBC Video and SCI FI Channel have agreed to work together on joint marketing promotions to support the brand launch.
Burton Cromer, Vice President, Consumer Products, BBC Worldwide Americas said: “We are delighted to be working with SCI FI Channel on the launch of this exciting new take on Doctor Who. The additional marketing support from SCI FI, as well their ability to reach such a broad audience base, made moving the release date an easy decision.” Executive Produced by Russell T Davies (lead writer) and Julie Gardner, the first series of Doctor Who attracted huge ratings and received critical acclaim when it aired on BBC ONE in March 2005.

I haven't been so excited about a Sci Fi Channel original in a looong time. This looks awesome!:D

Okay, I moved it. Only Woof-woof (and I call you that with the greatest of affection, baby) has rights to this forum, so he will have to merge the two threads for you.

I hate Tom Baker. If I saw him on the street with that stupid scarf, I would punch him in the face. This comment has nothing to do with this particular subject of discussion. I just hate him that much! :angry

Alright then lets begin.

Doctor Who made it's UW television premier last night with 2 Episodes back to back on Sci Fi Channel.

Doctor Who is a piece of my science fiction childhood that plays a vital role in my love of the genre. Now at the age of 30, I confess that the majority of my exposure to the show was at a very young age so my memories of the broader story of The Doctor are lacking somewhat.

It's the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker who I remember best. And in spite of some folks apparent hatred for the manI would punch him in the face He's he one I know and automatically associate with The Doctor.

The show as I do remember it had a quirky humor intermixed with the other-wordly feel of the adventures. K-9 was by far my favorite character an the concept of the Tardis itself just about blew my 6 year old mind, and I always used to think that the Daleks would be the masterminds over the rediculous Cylons over on BSG. Hell Twiggy from Buck Rogers had it all over the Cylons. But back on track.

I loved that show. It sparked my young imagination and last night when I saw the logo spinning in space and heard the eerie music I got goose bumps. The show brought back a perfect mix of modern special effects and culture while recapturing the character of The Doctor just as I remembered him.

Chris Eccleston's Doctor is brilliant, aloof, slightly forgetful protagonist who has a broad grasp of the nature of the Universe, yet could still be counted on to miss the fact that what he's looking for is directly behind him.

My only dissapointment is the word that Eccleston's Doctor will be short lived and apparently they've already moved on to a new lead man, David Tennant. Tom Baker had the longest run by far, 6 years as The Doctor and I would have liked to see the lead man stay put for a couple of seasons.

But I'm hooked. And if the quality of the series maintains what I saw last night then I'll stay hooked. Bring on the Daleks!

I was in my 20's when the Tom Baker episodes came out and while I would not...
...punch him in the face

I certainly didn't come to love Doctor Who. I did think Baker did a wonderful job with the role, but did not feel the story was sufficiently interesting enough for my interest in the story to survive "new" Doctors after Baker.

Stillllll. I taped the premier last night and will watch it sometime today and get back to you on what I thought.

...and how many threads are we going to HAVE on this show?

...well I watched.

It has a charm that will have me continuing on to watch it.

The new Doctor makes it work. He has just enough quirk and the show reminds me just enough of the old show.

Jon Pertwee rocks. I would buy that man a beer. For all I know, he may be dead. In which case, I will buy a beer and drink it myself. (I would do that anyway.) I will still punch Tom Baker in the face, with his stupid clothes.

A Sci-Fi channel original? What? I've allready watch that. Came out in Canada last year same as in GB.

Baker is my favorite, infact I wear that scarf, but now I have a feeling I'm gunna get punched in the face.

I've only recently discovered Doctor Who, and the show rocks. I got ahold of the original tapes, you know William Hartnell. Man those were bad. Like writing was non-existant, I then got Tom Baker stuff, and those were (although still not great to look at) really fun to watch. I'm not pickey when it comes to TV viewing really, but I can't wait for the new season with Tenant this October.

What's your hair style? Do you have the same coat?

If I could get hair like that, I would. I have a coat of similar colouring and cut, but not identical to any of his. I also once went downtown with a pocket full of gummie bears and asked people if they would, "like a jelly baby"

I was meh after the first 5 eps but after 6 this show picks up big time. The last ep has one of the most disturbing deaths scenes I've seen in a while.
