Just a link for now, hopefully someone will find and video later to stick here.
Sweeney Todd trailer (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809834155/video/4367764)
Looks great, but I wonder why they aren't pushing it more as a musical? There's just that one scene in the trailer with Depp and nothing else.

I just discovered the trailer and was about to post it... alas KingV beat me to it.
It looks nothing short of spectacular. Exceptionally exquisite.
And the quick shot of all the characters, from the snivelling Beedlebaum,
to the devilishly brooding Judge Turpin, appear to be turning on the
wicked charm of their roles to a hard eleven.
Hearing Depp sing was odd. He carries it enough for the role, but looking at the
amazing set designs, and character driven scenes, the singing almost seems
a bit secondary, which in my book, is fine with me, and makes perfect sense.
Depp, after all, should play towards his strengths in the making of the film.
Not try to focus in being an operatic tenor from hell. But I was pleasantly
surprised with the direction and found that I will be in the theater to see it.
In short, Depp's done it again. :D

The studio is nervous about it and is trying to hide the fact that it's a musical? :headscratch:

There, now that's the kind of family movie I want to see this Christmas!

Well, I'm up for it. I've never seen the original musical, but I like Sondheim a lot, so that's good for the music. Burton and Depp usually do pretty well together, so there's that. Should be good.

Good news is that it looks like it still has a "R" rating, even though there were stories that it was being knocked down to a PG-13.

sascha baron cohen is in this! I had no idea.
I saw this show in new york, and I'm not one for musicals, and I thought it was damn fine.
I'm excited.

I've seen a tape of the musical (with Angela Lansbury in Helena Bonham Carter's role no less) and loved it. Can't wait for this film.

This film should kick some serious ass! I've not seen it on the stage, but the theatre group I'm in is seriously geeked about the prospects for this picture. I was so happy I could have busted when I saw the trailer in front of Beowulf. "Rated R for graphic, bloody violence," if I remember correctly.
One complaint, though. I'm sort of bummed Depp hasn't come up with a different accent for this part. I figure the guy is awesome enough he should be able to do a voice that doesn't sound exactly like Jack Sparrow.
Anyway, if that's all that's wrong with this production I should just quit bitching.
As for the musical and the singing aspecta, I'm not sure why studios are afraid of releasing them at this point. There have been some pretty big winners in the musicals to big screen category in recent years. Moulin Rouge, Rent and Hairspray come to mind, and I'm thinking there were others. Plus Johnny Depp's singing voice sounds perfectly fine to me. That's one of my beefs with my theatre group right now. They're hesitant to produce musicals because if anybody is even so much as half an octave of pitch it will ruin the production. Not everybody has to be fuckin' Pavoratti here, people!
