Alright, just some news I found here:

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, is of now, a free agent. Here is a statement he released this morning:

"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
Exciting times, indeed."

So, it is going to be interesting to see what he has in store for NIN and possible other projects...I wonder how this is going to effect his tour....I was really, really fucking hoping he would be back in the Bay Area before they took a break for awhile....I guess we will just have to wait and see!

This is the third 90's heavy in 4 years to celebrate free agent status (Collective Soul in 2003 and Radiohead in 2005, both of whom have since released at least one album). Could this be the new trend? Use record companies to make a name for yourself and then turn the band into a private enterprise to do with exactly as you see fit even if you only sell a quarter of the records since you wouldn't get 25% of the sales value with a major? Not a bad idea, and it seems to be working so far.

Does anyone think we'll see a band on the scale of, say, U2 do something like this in the next 3 or 4 years?

It would not surprise me one bit. It seems studious have always been greedy and pushing what the market says is good music on the artist...It is about time the artist lifts his middle finger in the air and does it the way it is supposed to be done....Their way.
