I don't think, being in the military, that he's permitted to enjoy a hosed-down Bill.
Happies, anyway, Trey!

Not a huge kids fan. Don't dislike 'em, just not so comfortable around them. But they seem to like me, go fig.
Anyhoo, Romania is a country vibrant with possibility, but she's climbing from an era of despair. And lots of problems here to overcome. The Navy SeaBees got together to do a good deed, under the mission profile of civil support. Seems a local orphanage needed some refurbishment help. Even moreso, this is an orphanage with special needs kids, mostly autistic kids.
But this is my last weekend in Romania and I wanted to do a good deed. So Saturday, I answered the call for volunteering and off I went to help.
Hard work, but the kids were darling, dammit.
Accidently hit one of the orphanage workers with a small board. But she was ok. Felt like a douchbag, big time.
Best thing? One of the walls on the second floor had some doodling from one of the kids. I suggested this wall be left as is, for something the kids could continue doodling on, to express themselves. And it seemed like the facility manager was going for the idea.
Thanks, all! And nice new avatar, Negs, Darla all vamp'd out.
I haven't had much time for anything besides work, but I've seen much, done much. The above is an example, and I'll post more from my blog...

Transylvania, some quick descripts...
How does it look? Well, going across the country in a bus early in the morning, mountainous terrain, isolated, quaint villages, one large city (Brasov). On this particular morning, low, grey clouds, foggy mountains, nice n' spooky. It looks pretty much like you would image.
Hammer horror meets Cold War relics.
Lots of religious iconography everywhere...

Ok, not a lot of time, just some quick points to put out...
1. Drac's Castle-Actual name, Bran Castle. NOT built by Vlad the Impaler. He occupied it for a time and laid seige to it another. The REAL Castle Dracula, smaller, currently a ruin being excavated. The locals play up the "Castle Dracula" connection for the tourists, complete with a haunted house in a local village that ends in a bar.
2. Bram Stoker did NOT take Vlad as inspiration for his famous vampire. Chances are, he heard the name and thought it was cool.
3. Romanian castles are awesome. I have pictures.
4. Field life makes a nice break. A week is my limit. Saw a castle way outside the training range. No chance to explore.
5. Can't wait until I get more time for these things.
One week left...

Got Drunk for the first time...
I'm not a drinker. I'm a wine conniseur. I don't drink to get intoxicated. I just enjoy wine. Now, because of some knuckleheads, the rules on drinking here at the base in Romania are really lame. And sealed or not, no bottles of wine in your posession. Ie, no taking any good stuff home.
Well, I hit a real Romanian restaraunt while on the town. Enjoy good bread, great chicken livers and a beef fillet with stewed tomatoes, pesto, onions and more. And a really good wine from Mufatlar, the great local wine region, that I didn't get to visit because that occasion fell through due to lack of interest. :(
Anyhow, I wanted to order a glass. Got a whole bottle. Well, I paid for it, couldn't take the leftovers back to post with me, and I was alone...so...bottom's up.
So tell me? Does a wine drunk feel like you are partially out of your body? Almost animating it, rather than truly inhabiting it?
That's what it felt like.
Weird. Didn't really care for it.
Love wine, don't care for overindulging...but GREAT to enjoy some Romanian culture...

Building a community...
Here we are at a Romanian military airfield that saw it's heyday sometime during the Cold War, and is now long past. The Army and Navy engineers have worked wonders with this place in the last several months, but it's definitely seen better times. But she's more than she looks.
We've a local clinic that is performing at a level of a well staffed small town hospital. Local police, firefighters, gym, internet cafe, and a first class radio station is in the process of being built.
I'm rather proud of the last one.
I'm AFN Romania's first morning DJ. Small market radio being built from the ground up. Tuning into my show, you'll hear stuff ranging from Rush to Drowning Pool to Duran Duran to Johnny Paycheck, to Ice Cube.
And I'm doing news stories, production and updates to network Europe.
Busy as hell, but still managing to get out into the community on the weekends...including a possible visit to Dracula's castle...
How cool is that?
