I need some technical advice...(DVD authoring)

I need to convert some home movies to dvd, Anyone know where i can get some software to format the files to mpeg-2? Or a general video conversion program?

What exactly are you trying to do? Most DVD burners come with some kind of cheap "lite" software that allows you to create a basic DVD menu, add your video files in fairly few steps, and then it does the conversion and the burning for you. Or do you want to create a DVD without a menu? Even then, I think just converting the video to MPEG2 and burning it onto the DVD won't do the trick (never tried it though, the result may depend on the DVD player).
