People on the main page are making noise about the organization behind Le Chiffre being S.P.E.C.T.R.E. again. One, it's codswallop! Two, why the hell do people want to see them back to begin with?! Any insight here would be appreciated.

Eon has coyly not answered when asked this directly, leaving the fan base open to rumors.

What people really want is a continuing villain of some kind. It makes the movies less predictable. I mean, back when there was SPECTRE, it wasn't invincible James Bond vs. inevitably defeated Anyone Else. Sure, that movie's villain bit it, but a larger villain still lurked, and that added tension and excitement. SPECTRE represents all that.

Plus it makes the plot a little more distinctive. Other action heroes routinely battle against terrorists, or criminals, or even their own governments (a la Jason Bourne). The latter option isn't available to Bond--licenced to kill by Her Majesty's government is part of his allure, after all--so how do we distinguish Bond from John McClane or Ethan Hunt or any of their counterparts? One way is to create a global criminal conspiracy larger than any of the other heroes' opponents. It's another way of making Bond larger than life and setting him apart from the rest.

And the creation of a wholely original criminal organization can't accomplish this? Why rehash? Forge ahead, I say! :)

It's possible...it's even likely. We'll see.

I don't mind SPECTRE coming back just so as long as they put a different take on it- the old club of laughing maniacal villains in their multi-billion dollar secret bases (along with dim-witted henchmen who can't shoot straight) trying to take over the world has been done to the point of parody (Dr. Evil, anyone?)...

I think the Sony angle makes it interesting as that might circumvent the "McClory Question" somewhat, but I am no legal expert.

I agree that the organisation probably shouldn't be SPECTRE. It would be cool for one movie, but then it would be too hard to keep it clear of the parody.

i think it would be awesome to have bond(craig) go up against spectre. all they have to do is keep the serious modern tone like they did with the last movie.

I fully agree. Now that we've established a fresh new reboot with Craig's Bond, let's start introducing more of the traditional Bondian elements, making them fresh again. SPECTRE's on the top of the list, as are the gunbarrel sequence, Monty Norman's score and Q and Moneypenny.

Welcome aboard, June!

I'm accustomed with not having Q. Don't get me wrong his one of my favorite characters. However, It really wouldn't make a difference to me if they brought Q back.

As for SPECTRE..Arnold Vosoloo http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/74/27/12m.jpg
Reminds of my favorite portrayal of Blofeld (OHMSS). I can picture him going head to head with Craig's Bond.
