View Full Version : Winehouse

The queen of Bond wannabes (whether by her own intention or just lazy internet reporting) gets another notch on her belt today with a quote from Michael Wilson saying she was a possibility - not confirming anything, although I'm sure some sites will run with this as "proof" that she's got the job. After this latest round, I have only one thing to say.
F*** Amy Winehouse.
I'm pretty sick of the hype surrounding this messed-up crack junkie and can't understand why she gets the praise she does, especially among Bond fans. Okay, fine, she can sing, but is she the only person out there right now with a jazzy voice? In my opinion all she is is a very, very angry twenty-something white British girl who sells records largely on nostalgia because she sounds vaguely like a 60's Motown artist. If Eon wants that kind of sound for the next theme (and no one can be sure they do at this stage), then why not hire someone like Alicia Keys, or hell, even American Idol third-runner-up Melinda Doolittle? Ask yourself which person Eon would most want to be associated with - Keys used some of her income to set up a charity for African orphans. Winehouse spends her money on crack. To paraphrase Vesper Lynd, hiring Winehouse for anything is directly financing drug dealers. And after her drunken slurrings on the Grammys, ask yourself is this someone (and her currently jailed rageaholic husband) you want to be introducing to the Queen at the royal premiere?
ABA. Anyone But Amy. From a deeply fed-up Bond fan.
And as a side note, I'm thankful to be able to post this little rant in a forum where even though people may disagree with me, I won't get any responses like "you izz just a hata becuz you iz jealous hahahahaha ROTFLMAO". Thank goodness for that.

She may be a train wreck who would draw all the wrong kind of publicity to the project, but there is no doubt she is a talented artist who has struck a cord with popular culture. That might be all people need to rally behind her because they think she could produce a title track that would get lots of buzz and sell records.
Personally I'd rather she clean up her act before landing this gig, but I'm also painfully aware that in Hollywood you don't have to be a saint to get work.

To this I all, I say...

The music is powerful, not just because she can sing, but because of the control and nuance she brings to her singing. Her life may be a train wreck, but that's just more proof of how talented she is, because normally, with the female singers, if they're druggies or whatever, the media LOVES to throw them away, and she still gets rave reviews for her latest album.
There's a big push to discover the next vocalist, not in rock or pop, but in jazz or blues or country; something back to roots. So you find these tiny, young women like Winehouse or Norah Jones or Joss Stone with these HUGE voices.
Vocalists are finally getting a chance to be vocalists again, rather than band leaders or whatever.
Anyway, I hope Winehouse gets her thing together and doesn't destroy herself. But I doubt that Wilson was being anything but polite.

To be honest with you, I had the same exact reaction when I first heard she was rumored to be doing the next Bond song. In fact, the first thing I heard about her (along with the Bond song tidbit) was her drug problem. I had never heard her name before and wouldn't have even known she was a singer if the article(s) hadn't mentioned it.

Something like 5 Grammy's and 3 Brits, I think the producers would be lucky to get her ! The downside is that I can't see her doing anything too groundbreaking. It would probably just be a typical Bond theme.

She won five of six Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. The only one of the big four she lost was Album of the Year. Don't know how she did at the Brits, but she got her Grammy nods while being a notorius drug fiend. I'm with Kara. That's impressive regardless of how you feel about her personal behavior. Think of what she could do to the world of music should she clean up.
I'm not so sure we're in for typical Bond themes for the next few outings. I'm confident Babs and Michael will want to build on the buzz created by "You Know My Name." That one didn't hit it big in my area, but it seems to have done well elsewhere.
A throwback of sorts to Goldfinger or Diamonds are Forever, while not entirely original, could turn out uber cool in the hands of Winehouse and would be anything but the typical title track. Are there others who could do just as well? They just have yet to catch the same widespread attention this girl has.
EDIT: I guess to be fair I should point out that, in spite of multiple awards, it wasn't all that long ago that she walked on the stage so f---ed up that she blew her performance, broke into tears while on stage and swore at the audience who booed her. If that is the only press you have ever heard about her, I can see why you would be quick to judge her as just another crack addicted rock star. I guess I've got to hold out hope she'll get this gig as a sign that her life it turning around for the better. I'd rather hope for conflicted starlets like Spears and Winehouse to battle back from the abyss than tear them down and discard them. Except Paris Hilton. She's just a whore. :D

I may have missed some announcement, but is it a sure thing or just a likelihood at this point that the next vocalist will be a female?

This is all just fun speculation. Typically the official announcement on the title track doesn't come until late summer early fall.

The big name in the frame over here in the UK at the moment is Duffy.

There's now talk of Adelle as well. Forgive my ignorance, but my initial response to both was "who?" :headscratch:
