From what I understand, New Line is technically dead as a studio, but Warner Bros is going to keep the name for use as a distribution label.

Warner was worried about getting cannibalized by New Line. The success of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy propelled the studio into the big league. New Line is contractually obliged to distribute "The Hobbit" but you can bet after that it will go on a diet and return to its roots. Sadly it looks like Hollywood is going back to the bad old days with a small group of owners running the whole show.
Next to fall .... Picturehouse. N

C2 is just their plaything which they might as well call Terminator Pictures. So far, their only non-Terminator productions have been I Spy and Basic Instinct 2.
I wouldn't call that running a production company. It's more like playing around with other people's money.

have existed.

so Lav, whats this mean for the two part The Hobbit? I read that New Line cinema is still contractually obligated to distribute it but what other changes can we expect without Bob Shaye and the rest of the original New Liners?

I can possibly see WB taking over. But heres the possible reason why New Line went down tthe way it did. Tolkien Family, Peter Jackson, Weinsteins, and most of the other groups involved with Lord of the Rings did not get payed for what they had earned with the films. And Time Warner couldn't account for the money.

Last 'Harry Potter' Book Becomes 2 Films
Thursday March 13 5:50 AM ET
Harry Potter was the center of seven novels, but he'll star in eight films. The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Producers are expected to announce Thursday that J.K. Rowling's last "Potter" installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.
"It was born out of purely creative reasons," producer David Heyman told the Times. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book."
The two final "Potter" films will be shot concurrently, much like the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel "The Lord of the Rings"
Another famous Tolkien tome, "The Hobbit" is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.
Filming on the sixth "Potter" flick, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," began in September.
"It's been brilliant," said star Daniel Radcliffe. "It's also, I think, the funniest of the films so far."
The "Potter" film franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.
