Things To Do on Sundays When There Is No Football

Revive your on again, off again relationship with baseball.

Put little football helmets on your hampsters and lecture them on the forward pass.

Go to hockey's house and ask repeatedly "How many teams get in your playoffs?".

Visit your nearby stadium, pick a nice seat, and boo continuously.

Watch rugby while rugby's parents go out for a night on the town.

Remeber: Unlike the great astroturf vs. grass debates, there have been no attributable deaths to football withdrawl. Yet.

I'm currently checking the free agent swaps thats happening and I'm somewhat happy Lance Briggs stayed with the Bears- it takes some of the sting off that Grossman deal. :D

The Bears lost Bernard Barrian to the Vikes & traded Brian Griese to the Bucs for a draft pick. They also didn't renew that one player who I won't even try to spell his name - the one with about a dozen vowels in it. Heck I'm not sure I got Barrian spelled right.

I feel sorry for Griese. Unlike Grossman he really didn't get a chance to play, and when he did, he didn't have great games - it was a lot of pressure.

Anyone else have trades or drafts to chat about?

Wow. A class guy, a giant in the game, he goes out on his terms. The NFL will never be the same--I don't think we'll see any QB ever match his consecutive games played streak.

As a Bears fan I'm somewhat elated that Farve has retired, he used to pwn us a lot back in the 90's and early 2000- but in the last few seasons the Bears have finally gotten the better of him- he's a great QB though and my hat's off to him.

What's going on with the free agent spending sprees of the Raiders and Jets- does anyone actually think they will get better this season? Has Alzeimer Davis finally lost it? I heard he gets fed Gerber baby food and has to be burped by Art Schell... :eyebrow:

They played some of Favre's press conference on the radio. Eee gads, but I feel like crying myself.

When he started getting really choked up talking about the team, you can hear about a thousand strobes flashing in his face.

Poor Brett, it's tough to leave and even tougher with those media scum hawking you when you're vulnerable.

It's like TSH says above...Even fans of teams he royally screwed over respects him..I think that's the biggest thing on Favre. My brother in law is a hardcore Niner fan and we remember the Packers and the Niners in the 90s...even if they're not divisional rivals. But over the last few years, even the bro in law softened on him.

As a NFL fan first (and a Chiefs fans second), I will never....ever.....ever...forget that Packers-Raiders game a day after he lost his father.

But it's not just that. Favre, even if he beat our favorite teams, embodied the NFL spirit that we like in a lot of cases.

I mean, even if he wasn't on our teams, as NFL fans, we could respect him for the love he gave for the game. He was like a big kid on the field throughout his career.

I think it's really shitty thinking about him out of the game and I like how he was honest in that press conference...i.e "I'm not going to say I have no regrets about retiring..and that I won't be thinking still 'I could do that' on Sundays..."

That's another thing too. In our Free Agency age, we hear so much about QBs who spent their careers with one team only to end it with another...Joe Montana, Warren Moon and Drew Bledsoe spring to mind. Brett hasn't done that...unless he comes back out of retirement and I don't think he will. That's to be respected as well.

Some part of me wishes he was still playing...but I like how he went out this week. That's cool too.

I saw a friend the other day that I hadn't seen in a little while. I asked him "How are you hold up on Sundays, with no football on?"

He says to me "I watch golf."

OK, I can see playing golf. It's social & good exercise, so even if you suck you still get benefits from it.

But watching golf to me is boring, second only to watching tennis. And as far as a off season substitute for the NFL - no. I've never seen anyone whip a beer can across the room and scream bloody murder because somebody missed a putt.

The closest replacement I could ever find for the NFL during off season was rugby. And now that I don't have cable, I clean the house. Last weekend I cleaned out the fridge. It was still better than watching golf.

neglet
03-20-2008, 06:17 AM
Good God, save me from weekends where the only thing to watch is golf or NASCAR. Look! Maybe you can see the little ball go up and down! Ooo! Cars going in circles! Wow! That's why I have a DVD player in my workroom. When its not a football weekend or March Madness, that's what I watch.

But hey, it's only a month until draft day! I'm crazy enough that I'll watch the early rounds. It's like cookie crumbs when you're on a diet.

Well, there's always Arena Football. And NHL is coming down to the wire towards the playoffs. I do occasionally watch PGA, but usually only if Tiger's playing. Cmon, this last weekend when Tiger won it by draining a 25ft birdie on 18 was amazing.

Just to make Negs feel a little better, why don't you read about Peter King's take on Matt Millen's draft record with the Lions (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/03/16/draft/1.html)?

Just think about it this way. .268 isn't bad for a batting average. :) :smirk:

There's some interesting draft scenarios in King's latest column (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/03/21/mmqb/index.html). He's got the Cowboys trading up to 4 to get Darren McFadden.

I don't see them doing this. MB3 has been a great back, and they got rid of Julius to avoid all the confusion about who's the lead back.

He also makes the hypothetical of Ocho Cinco(Chad Johnson) getting pissy with Cincy, and being traded to Dallas next year. How'd you like to line up against TO and CJ??

Ah, to dream away waiting for the Draft in a month.....

He and his out-country doctor are claiming he's got multiple personality disorder. I didn't catch all of it, but I guess he's trying to blame a domestic problem on the "other" guy.

Wow, what a headscratcher that is- it seems the Chiefs are in rebuilding mode year after year, Allen was their best player- he is young and has got a lot of years ahead of him so trading him away to me seems kinda boneheaded.

I heard today on the radio that Allen had gotten into some trouble(a couple of DUIs) and the Chief's president called him out and Allen then responded that he would never sign a longterm deal.

By what I saw in the draft, let's put it this way: if everything works out as planned, we'll have one great player on each segment of the team but there will still be holes in the other positions. In other words, we'll still need major O-line and defensive secondary help.

NFL Withdrawl Symptoms

Stage 1
* Cold, clammy hands unless touching pigskin.
* Frequent and urgent need to use remote to "flip to the game" on Sundays.
* Strong desire to wear football jersey to bed.

Stage 2
* Sleep interrupted by shouts of "What down is it?! What down is it?!"
* Inability to load any game other than John Madden's into game console.
* Driving is not recommended. Patient will repeatedly stop at high school football field and try to ref imaginary games.

Stage 3
* Vision becomes impaired by floating helmets.
* Patient unresponsive to friends & family members unless addressed as "Coach".
* Patient will only be lured from home with promises of "box seats".

*RK crawls from the room with eyes tightly shut against floating NFC helmets*

I don't want Grossman dead, I just want him to be someone else's problem, like Miami. Of course, I'll probably change that opinion right about during the first game of the season.

I don't know it sounded to me like those boat cops were out to get Benson. Getting "pulled over" 6 times? That's a hint and a half for your ass to either go find something else to do with your family & friends, or drop you at the pier and let them party without you. I would have after the second time the cops pulled me over. The DUI, well, that's different.

The worst part of it is that teams will actually agree to such deals. Owners have no one to blame but themselves when they hold all the cards. How often do all top 10 picks from a single year beome HOF candidate stars? Really, these guys are not worth the money but it won't change as long as ownership is willing to dole out the dough for a "maybe" at best.

The league has no one but its own membership to blame for this.

A Trib reporter this weekend said he couldn't picture Favre in a Bears jersey. I think the reporter was a pud, I'd take anything, anyone, any species over what the Bears are sportin' now.

I must say that I have lost a lot of respect for Farve- if he really didn't want to retire then why did he announce it IN THE FIRST PLACE?! He really puts the Pack management in a bad position and not to mention he's just screwed Aaron Rodgers big time. I thought he was a man of honor and commitment but it seems that he is actually a whiny primadonna douchebag who just seems to love attention. He single handedly lost the NFC championship against the Giants with a Grossman-like throw to the opposite team- what a maroon.

How stupid has this become? Was Brett hit with too many concussions? What a moron- so it wasn't the Vikings coaching staff who tampered with Brett Favre but instead it was actually Favre himself- and Sports Illustrated named him Sportsman of the Year last year?

Now if the Bears had any brains they would trade SeeDrink Benson (pity they cut him) and Wrecks Gross-man for this old fart- he may be dumb as a doorknob but he can throw better than Wrecks.

TrekSucksHard

He might have said he was retired but to call up an opposing team (plus a conference rival) to talk about coming back while still technically under contract with the Pack when he told everyone he was done (via a teary-eyed press conference, I might add), then going on FAUX News saying that the Packers management forced him to retire and using a cellphone supplied by the Pack seems pretty boneheaded to me- it kills his image as an honorable guy.

I don't know if they'll have a choice. It seems that Favre and the NFL are determined to have him play this year. If the only viable contenders are Minn or Chi, then they'll force GB to trade him there.

Personally if I was GB, I'd tell Favre tough titties. You either go to where we can trade you, or your ass sits on the bench. You retired, you go through this drama queen situation every offseason, we've moved on.

sickness
08-06-2008, 06:39 PM
Well, since the time you posted this, it seems as though he has become a lock for either NYJ or TB. We'll see what happens.

I think GB will tell him to go to hell as you suggest if he's going to stomp his feet and insist on playing for a division rival this season. His unfavorable number in Wisconsin has shot through the roof in recent weeks, up from 7% at retirement to 34% last week with his favorable taking a precipitous drop from 73% to 43% or somesuch. He's got no leverage no matter how much the league might support him. In the end, trades within a division at the demand of a star player can only happen with the support of the fans.

The Packers management better hope that Aaron Rodgers doesn't choke or else their jobs might just be in jeopardy. I can't believe they let Favre go and they are going to gamble with an untested QB like that.

An untested QB who they spent a first-round pick on? A QB who is not at the end of his career? It wouldn't be the first time that a replacement for a legend sucked (see Smith, Alex) and it, even combined with the sour grapes between the team and Brett on his departure, certainly will not form a chopping block for management. It may for Rodgers but not management. Shee-it. They went to the NFC Championship just last season and lost to the team that schooled New England. They can't be doing that bad a job.

But I think Rodgers has had a great mentor in Favre and he'll at least not make the team explode. He's a wildcard but he's better than milking one or two more seasons out of a guy who clearly is on the verge of true retirement whether he wans to admit it or not. Always gotta be looking down the road.

TrekSucksHard
08-09-2008, 03:07 AM
Brett Favre is not at the end of his career- he took the Packers to the NFC championship, I believe he has a good two years left. This whole affair is nothing more than an ego trip by TT, he couldn't swallow his pride and welcome Favre back so instead he gets rid of him and takes a gamble on Rodgers just because he already made a verbal commitment that he was the starter. All he could have done was say, "Brett is back and we have a competition at QB." But his ego wouldn't let him.

Favre is the Green Bay Packers- he was the one difference all these years- I remember the Packers before he came in, they were nothing more than mediocre as the Bears and Vikes ruled the division back then, looks like that will happen again- if hopefully the Bears will get their sh*t together...

sickness
08-10-2008, 08:22 AM
A couple years left in him after 16? I'd call that being at the end of his career. GB is doing a smart thing and looking to the future. Favre was doing the selfish thing and trying to hold the team hostage to his demands to play until he goes out on a nasty injury and Rodgers is not prepared to take over because he's been forced to sit on the bench for another 2 years. If they've managed to keep him at all in that scenario.

Sadly I don't think the Bears will do much this season- waay too many problems on offense (the o-line, RBs, WRs and of course, the QBs). I predict 8-8 or at my most optimistic at 10-6.

I hope Lovie Smith finally gets his head out of his a$$ and designates Kyle Orton as the starter- the offense needs focus and this constant QB circus needs to end (so that they can get to work on their other problems...). Then trade Wrecks Grossman for anybody (preferably an offensive lineman) and grab Chris Simms once the Bucs cut him.

I hope Favre does well with the Jets and hope Rodgers chokes in GB. :eyebrow:

Sadly I don't think the Bears will do much this season- waay too many problems on offense (the o-line, RBs, WRs and of course, the QBs). I predict 8-8 or at my most optimistic at 10-6.

Mr. Karma thought 10-6 for Da Bears this season too. I'll split the difference between you & go 9-7.

So glad Kyle got the top spot, I was liking Hainey (sp?) too, and the O line looks improved in pre season play. I hope the O gets a bit better, there are some devastating defences out there.

So how 'bout everyone else? Predictions for your teams? Anyone got a few words on promising new players?

Omi how the 'Boys looking this year?

Any news out of Chiefs territory, DJ?

Come on, don't be shy, predictions and stuff welcome. :D

I wasn't too worried until I started watching the preseason games. It doesn't appear the Cowboys are doing too good. I am worried that they might be buying into the hype they are getting as the best team in the NFC. Hopefully they will get their heads into the game and just play to their potential.

I'm going out on a limb and saying .500 for the Lions, 8-8.

If the 9ers get their QB sitch straightened out (Alex Smith is either the man or he is off to another team... but then there's the new guy vs. the guy who gave the best performance of all three QB's last year and has gained a multi-year multimillion dollar deal for it: Shaun Hill), I can see them going 8-8 just on having that settled. 10-6 seems like a real possibility if they keep improving the way they have been so far what with Mike Martz coming in and already making a major impact on the offense.

omicron
08-27-2008, 06:35 PM
Sickness, if the 9ers win more than 6 games I'll be surprised.
They have to play Seattle twice, plus the NFC east and New England.

Plus they are starting JT O'Sullivan, which sounds like it should be the name of a chain resturant. Not to mention he has been in the league for 7 years and with 7 different teams and has NO starts.

sickness
08-27-2008, 10:29 PM
Can't be worse than Alex Smith. I'm still wondering what happened to last year's hero, Shaun Hill, though. How did the guy who gave the only solid performance at QB last season end up 3rd behind a lackluster free agent and an overpaid underperformer who should be traded or cut by now?

Seattle sucks balls. Haven't been the same since they lost the Super Bowl.

New England is on their way down, especially since they can't cheat anymore what with the League having eyes on them at al times. Dynasties only last so long. Besides, that's only one game.

With Martz on board, I could see them doing 8-8 realistically. After all, St. Louis and Arizona are in their division. That's 4 wins right there.

JarrodSarafin
08-28-2008, 03:15 AM
RK, I'm full expecting the Chiefs to suck dingo balls this season.

My long time owner dies...What does his son do? Oh, let's get rid of Trent Green (that was probably a wise move after the fact), get rid of Dante Hall, pay Larry Johnson too much money...

And to top it all off....Let's trade Jared Allen!

Yay! (Feel the hatred inside me.)

I guess the good thing about expecting to suck is there is only one direction to go from there as a fan.

Up, right?

Right?!?!

I mean, we can't suck any more than the Raiders. At least, we should be above the Raiders. If we hit last place in the AFC West, we will have sunk to new lows. Lose more than the Raiders? Now, that's low...

I will be happy with a 9-7 season...but I seriously doubt it's happening.

This season is shaping up to be wonderful for me. I get to listen to my older sister go on and on about the Cowboys (after 29 years of listening to my father go on and on about the Cowboys) while watching my team suffer. Bring on binge drinking during football!

Yeah, I am interested to see what is going to happen with the Patriots now that their star player is out. I am sure with Brady's injury that most of the other teams will have a sigh of relief.

Also, you gotta give props to Farve with his game today. It seems like he is still on top of it....Then again, it IS only the first game of the season.:smirk:

It's the Superbowl loser curse, I tells ya- it happened to the Bears last year when almost the entire defense went down with injuries (if only it happened to Grossman instead we would have still been in the hunt last season!). I still imagine at times that if only Griese or Orton had played in the SB we would have won it...

Now if we could just trade Grossman for a WR- it seems our o-line is started to gel, thank God.

Thanks Red and Omi, just blogged about my experience at my Mania official blog (http://www.mania.com/JarrodSarafin/blog/09/2008/hurricane-ike-experience_blog_638.html)..

Needless to say, it was a harrowing experience. The 5 days without air conditioning was the worse for me though.

And I truly feel for those people in Galveston and Bolivar. Bolivar in particular is nearly wiped out. There's going to be a lot of unconfirmed dead from that area for whoever stayed since they were likely washed out to sea. My heart goes to them.

Galveston will likely be a dark city for months as they pick up the pieces too.

It's heartbreaking to hear that. I just don't understand why people would stick around, especially after authorities told people that stayed to write the ss # on their arms so they can be identified. It'll probably be months before we know the exact toll in lives. Pity

That is very true, Wise. Definitely a lot of overpaid busts from #1 Draft Picks...*cough Ryan Leaf cough*

But I'll still take the #1 pick over 4 wins.

I'll take one victory...just so we escape that record. But I'd rather have the #1 pick in the hopes that the pick actually turns out okay. Offensive lineman or QB maybe...

Yes, I MISS going to playoffs and losing the first game every year. Why? Because at least we made it to the ruddy playoffs. At least, we showed up in our own HOME and won everytime. I liked Marty as well but how many years can you just settle for the playoffs? That's why I didn't disagree with that move. And the Chargers just looked at history and decided to act while the team still has a chance. Norv, who I hate, almost got them there last year.

Marty had some good teams on his run at KC. I would've wanted more.
Still remember the game against Seatle, when they were in the same division. DT (may he rest in peace) had 8 sacks I believe in that game but barely missed getting his ninth which was the play that cost them the game. One of the better games ever

Damn, I can't believe the Bear fans who were BOOING their own team while they were still ahead 21-20 because Orton couldn't get the first down. Then Hester had to get the fans fired up when they were stopping Philly at the goal line. What the hell people? If you aren't going to cheer for your team at least give me your damn tickets and I'll find someone who will. I can't believe that, booing your own team. DISGRACEFUL!

The O is dropping too many of Orton's passes. I hope they get better at this sooner rather than later.

The O-line has a big problem against pass rushers though Orton hung on to the ball too long a number of times, I noticed. Offense needs to call more play action passes and screens and they should work on that.

I think we still have a chance but the offense (pass protection, stop dropping balls and Orton still has to work on his accuracy and fumbles) needs to improve. We seem OK on defense as long as there aren't too many injuries. I would rather bench Tommie Harris for a few games and let him heal since the teams we are gonna go up against are much weaker than the first four. With the Vikes going nowhere and Aaron Rodgers injured I think we got a chance to steal the division but we still need improvement!

Elated that my REDSKINS are rolling.
Scalped the boys last week, clipped eagle wings this week.
Next week as long as they don't get overconfident we're going to dehorn the Rams. Ok they've been dehorned already, so we'll neuter them.
Can I be any cornier?

Chiefs are proving that Herman E. isn't that good a coach. He was overhyped with the Jets without any major accomplishments and only got the Chiefs job because he knew Dick Vermeil

Titans are looking very impressive. Jeff Fisher may be the best coach in the NFL. Hard to say that without a ring (by a damn yard) but his teams are always very good, regardless of who he loses.

How long can the Giants keep this going? Hate to see how good they look. Ain't Superbowl Champs suppose to struggle the following year?

Happy to see the Chargers stumble. Hate them. LT has lost a step and all the wear and tear is showing. Maybe they let the wrong running back go. Rivers has a big mouth and makes him easy to hate. And of course they're missing their steroid using all pro line backer, Merriman

Dolphins beat the 2 teams from last years AFC championship. SAY WHAT?
Is Parcell that good that the minute he steps in the franchise becomes automatically better.

Is there a worse division than the NFC West?
Maybe the AFC West?

Millen's firing didn't help the Lions.
Oh, that's right, he doesn't play.
Maybe in a couple of years we'll see them improve. But this franchise is entrenched in its losing ways and it'll take a lot to drag them out of that habit. Sort of like the Cardinals and Browns

What's the deal with Aaron Rodgers?
Think they're going to regret trading Favre?
I still think it was a good move, otherwise Rodgers would've bolted next year. And Favre IMO is the most overrated qb in history. The hell with the records, he only has 1 ring. Give me Brady, Montana, Aikman, Elway, Bradshaw, Simms before I even consider Favre.

At least this week the Rams weren't the worse team. Oh that's right it was their bye week.

Well its offical, the Detriot Lions are the worst team in the NFL, they might as well let the cheerleaders suit up, hell they might play better, cause the bunch of women that call themselves a Pro level football team, sure the hell aren't. I, in no way am dissin Da Bears, but this was at least a chance for the Lions, BUTTTT NOOOO they played the worst game of football that ive seen in LONNNNGGG while, and thats saying something with this team....damnit...oh well at least the Red Wings are up and playing again, and looking to continue mass spanking of the rest of the NHL....

LOL- maybe a change in uniforms is the answer?

Look at the Broncos- when they wore those ugly pink orange jerseys they couldn't win a Superbowl but the moment they switch to a darker blue one they won two in a row. When the Pats got rid of their red and whites and turned them into silver and blue they started becoming a dynasty. after Tampa Bay changed from pinky sissy orange to crimson and gold and added a skull and crossbones they won their Superbowl. :eyebrow:

WTF happened to my REDSKINS, I can't believe they lost to the lowly Rams. I know the Rams are coming off a bye and with a new coach probably had some life but that shouldn't have been enough to let this game slip away. The Skins beat them in everything, 1st down, possesion time, passing and rushing yardage. I guess those 3 turnovers and that hailmary were the difference.

At least the Cowgirls lost too. That always alleviates the pain a little.

Hopefully that loss reawakens the Skins for Cleveland and Detroit the next 2 weeks and learn to play every team as if they were the champs and not take them for granted.

Roy Williams is hardly a castoff; he's a premier receiver, and now that he'll be working with a top-notch QB (when Romo returns) with a decent O-line and running game, he should return to the form he had in 2006, when he went to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns.

What does that say about how desperate the Lions are, and how much this season is in the crapper; they'd much rather get a first-, third- and sixth-round pick in 2009 (giving back a ‘09 seventh-rounder in return) than keep one of the few real scoring threats on the team. At least we still have Megatron Johnson.

omicron
10-15-2008, 06:19 AM
Of course Negs, 2006 was the only year Roy managed to stay healthy and play all 16 games.

I understand why they did it. He's a good YOUNG reciever(TO is 34), and it should open up the field more for the others and prevent doubleteams on TO. Plus Dallas has a ton of draft picks thanks to various deals.

I really dunno what to think about this years' Bears- there are times that they look like they can go to the Superbowl and at other times they look like total chokers.

I just don't think Derek should get the blame for a losing organization.

So, who thinks the Lions will actually win a game this season? Here's their remaining schedule:

Sunday, November 23 TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Thursday, November 27 TENNESSEE TITANS
Sunday, December 7 MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Sunday, December 14 at Indianapolis Colts
Sunday, December 21 NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Sunday, December 28 at Green Bay Packers

They usually manage to play okay for a half, then fold like perforated cardboard. Maybe they can beat the Saints, but all those other teams are in the playoff hunt and won't be slacking off. Last night we saw the first 11-10 score in NFL history; could we see the first 0-16 season ever?

JarrodSarafin
11-17-2008, 03:13 PM
I thought Tampa Bay had the first 0-16 season in the 70s? Or did they have a shorter season back then...like 0-15?

Either way, I think the Lions have a shot at it..which is somewhat disappointing. I'd like to get the #1 draft pick...Come on, Lions...Screw up and win one game!!

neglet
11-18-2008, 06:01 AM
I think Tampa Bay's winless season was 0-14, in their expansion year.

If the Lions have a chance to miss the #1 draft pick by winning a single game, you can bet they will do it. It happened two or three years ago: they were tied with the Raiders for worst record, and played the Cowboys in their last game. I think the game actually meant something for the Cowboys, the difference between division winner and wildcard, maybe? And the Lions pulled it out to get the #2 pick. That's just how we roll.

I think after the Williams trade, we will have something like five picks in the first three rounds ... if we hire a decent GM, maybe they can parlay that high pick into more. We need all the help we can get.

OMG, they black out games by you?!?! That is ROTTEN! Hockey I could see, because that was always blacked out by me, but NFL? WTF! Is that because of your team, or who they were playing?

The NFL blacks out games locally when the venue doesn't sell out a couple days before the game. As bad as the Lions have been, their fans have been loyal and have bought all the available tickets--especially since the team moved from the larger Silverdome to the very nice, but smaller, facilities at Ford Field. But this crappy season, combined with the state economy in the toilet, means the sellouts haven't been happening. The two home games before Thanksgiving were blacked out, which is probably just as well. It's usually no big deal, because the other network will have a game I can watch. Luckily, they did sell out Thanksgiving so I could watch the carnage while eating my turkey.

Btw, did I mention that I actually got to walk around in an NFL locker room earlier this year? I was working as a guide at the state marching band championships, which were held at Ford Field. One of the warm-up rooms for the bands was the visiting team locker room, so I got to stand around there for half an hour. All the lockers were empty, of course, but it was fun to browse all the signs the NFL had posted. There was one on how to wear the uniform and equipment properly, and one stressing the importance of helmets. There was also one noting that bounties or rewards for hits are illegal. It was kind of cool, although obviously my thoughts of bad mojo towards visiting teams didn't work.

I think that stinks that you can't watch your home team unless they sell out. How the heck are they supposed to generate NEW fans or please current ones unless they can SEE a game?

That's pretty cool negs, getting to see anything off the beaten path plus double bonus for you that it was free. Bounties for nasty hits? Dang, this is a passionate sport!

The best thing I heard of was when a friend was a young boy, he and his brothers got to run around out on Lambeau Field (in the off season) and throw each other passes. They got to do that because they toured the old Packers Hall of Fame, and because a really nice groundskeeper said it would be OK as long as they didn't rip up the turf. They weren't Packers fans, just kids on vacation with their parents, but they always held a good deal of admiration and respect for Green Bay for having kind and helpful staff.

Has anyone else here gotten to see anything "back stage" at the NFL?

Omi, they didn't print the odds on the tickets, just the pay out. My $20 Pitt bet is worth $140, and the $5 Philly bet is worth $45. You could probably work out the odds from that, I know I can't my math stinks.

Oh man. Just watched the Pitt/Dallas game, which I admit I was salivating over since last weekend.

Every year I seem to catch 10 minutes or more of a game that was IMHO, epic. Today was that day.

If you caught the last 10 minutes of that game, you know what I'm talkin' about.

I'll have to catch the replay on NFL network, I only got to watch part of the first half.

...and in other news, it looks like the Lions are almost guaranteed the first-ever 0-16 season. I mean, they play at Indy, home against NO, and at Green Bay. All three of those teams are still in the hunt for playoff spots (maybe not Green Bay by the last game, but the Lions never win at Lambeau).

At least there's nowhere to go from here but up ... I hope.

If it helps Negs, I'm worried about the Colts looking past the Lions. We're playing so hot, I could easily see them looking beyond Detroit to...say...the Titans in a couple weeks.

That is I could see them looking beyond Detroit if they weren't coached by Tony Dungy and QB'd by Peyton "Game Tape" Manning.

Yeah. Sorry. 0-14 for sure. :D

And as an additional "F-You" to the fans, Detroit owner William Clay Ford says he's not firing anyone else this year:

The Lions will not clean house completely after the season, despite making history with their futility.

Owner William Clay Ford said in a released statement Sunday that "he expects both Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew to return to the organization next season."

Lewand is the Lions' chief operating officer. Mayhew was promoted to general manager after Ford fired Matt Millen three games into this season.

Before the Lions suffered a 42-7 loss to New Orleans and became the first NFL team to reach 0-15, Ford told Booth Newspapers that Lewand and Mayhew would help him hire another executive, with their roles yet to be defined. He also said he had not made up his mind whether to fire coach Rod Marinelli.

The Lions will lose at Lambeau next week, capping off a "perfect" season. At least the Cowboys lost, too. If they miss the playoffs, their traded picks become more valuable.

Of course, that just makes it more likely that they will make it in. Then I can look forward to a #1 pick of another wide receiver. Or another Joey Harrington. <shudder> Because our idiot owner can't bring himself to fire some guys that have made his franchise the laughing stock of all professional sports.

Is there a worse owner in all of professional sports? At least when Art Modell sold the Browns to Cleveland, the fans had a fast, clean break. They weren't forced to watch the slow, sad decline of their team into oblivion.

So, it's Pittsburgh vs. Pittsburgh WEST. Awesome. Not that I wouldn't have minded a Turnpike Bowl but I think Philly was a little scary for us. I'm liking the odds.

I think Polamalu ought to be named Secretary of Defense. I could not see us playing in Tampa had he missed that interception. Ravens would have gotten at least the field goal, gone ahead, and Pittsburgh may have lost the momentum. It's hard enough having to play against the opposing team, but the officiating was horrible. Granted, the roughing the kicker call, while beneficial, was a bad call, but mostly it was a very lopsided game in terms of judging.

I'm glad to see some fresh blood in the Bowl as well as a chance for Kurt Warner to prove he's more than a flash in the pan. I'm also liking the Steelers in there again. It shows that their offense in '05 wasn't completely powered by Bettis.

Whichever this game goes, we all win unless it's a 41-3 blowout or the like.
