'Who' Actors Launch Fourth Series (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7325727.stm)
Sounds great, I hope David Tennant does stick around for a while, he's fantastic. I love Catherine Tate, I'm really interested in seeing what the dynamic between the two will be like since it's not going to have any romantic shadings.
Jakester
04-03-2008, 10:30 AM
The general reaction of fans to having Tate be the latest companion has been pretty darn negative, to put it mildly, though. I thought she was fine in the Christmas special, but I'm otherwise unfamiliar with her work, which may work in her favour for me.
Lots of cool stuff coming up this season, too. Some of it you could glimpse if you were able to see some of the previews. Otherwise, I'll keep my yap shut.
I think Tennant is a great Doctor, and I'd love to see him stick around as well. Eccleston was also easily likeable and I wasn't sure how someone could fill his shoes, but Tennant did so easily and nicely.

what I'm upset abou is that the BBC America doesnt put Doctor Who on its On Demand schedule next to Torchwood at all... grrrrrr.... that and the box set sells for close to $100!
i liked Martha Jones as a companion, I couldnt understand how she appeared on Torchwood as Martha Jones this season, i guess she decided to skip out on the Doctor last season i assumed she'd be back in the Companion seat again?
Willthe Sarah Jane Chronicles feature K-9 the dog? i was upset because i missed that episode.
Jakester
04-03-2008, 11:50 AM
In the S3 finale of Doctor Who, Martha decides to stay instead of leave with the Doctor. She'll be appearing in several episodes this season, though. I wanted Kylie to be the new companion, but that ain't happening. There was an animated Who special that had both Ageyman and Tennant voicing their characters. That was pretty cool, too.
I saw the Sarah Jane pilot/Christmas special, and K-9 is in it, albeit briefly. I don't think he'll be a regular on that series. It was pretty good, though. Thinking back, I'm reminded of Slusho, though.
KingVoyeur
04-03-2008, 12:34 PM
The last I heard, Tate is his companion for like 6 eps, Billie Piper is reprising Rose for a handful of eps, then Ageyman is back for I don't know how long.
Jakester
04-03-2008, 12:36 PM
I knew about Rose and Martha returning, but not for how many episodes. I thought Tate would still be in all of those, though. I'll be very interested to see how they get Rose back -- or will it be flashback, or will they go back in time and meet a past version of Rose? Hmmm.....
mckracken
04-03-2008, 01:55 PM
c'mon Jakester... Rose is only in an alternat reality... once that the doctor cant open, sure but it seemed that the technology already existed on that reality to jump between worlds... it was only a matter of time before the tech was re-invented and the doorway was opened again...
plus Rose still would exist in the past on regular Earth only the doctor knows better than to meddle into the past.

New season kicked off on Saturday night and I have to say, it's sooooooooooooooooooo good to have it back. I think with Catherine Tate's comedy background we've got an assitant who can play off David Tennant really well, to illustrate this, there is an hilarious lip-reading scene to watch out for. And, Given what we're talking about here, the ending gave me a real shock. I did not expect to see Rose so early in the season, don't know what to make of her ethereal quality though :headscratch:
Plus the Adipose have got to be the cutest aliens I have ever seen.
Jakester

I'm with you on that spoiler, 'Tuz! I was shocked.
The adipose were awesome!

Some things I hope they will cover this series:
I'm pretty certain Astrid will be back (whether or not it's Kylie or not remains to be seen). I mean you don't give someone a name that's an anagram of TARDIS and only have them in one episode!
Queen Elizabeth the 1st. After that very very strange Shakesperean episode last season, I hope they realise that we haven't forgotten that bizarre exchange between her and the Doctor at the end of that episode!
Jakester
04-07-2008, 07:05 AM
I lurrrve Kylie, and I would have really enjoyed seeing Astrid be the new companion, but I do get what they're going for having a companion who has no physical/romantic interest in the Doctor. That's pretty refreshing, and I liked Donna much more than I did in "The Runaway Bride."
I know people have been slagging off RTD because he seems to be a one-trick-pony with the story structure (bad government/company, sonic device saves the day), but I don't expect tons from every plot. They seem more to set up some comedy and advance character development and slightly advance the larger arc. I guess I don't have a problem with it because for me, Who is still fun, and that's really all I'm looking to get out of the show.

Episode two continued the good work and I was shocked to find it wasan episode where they travelled back in time that I actually enjoyed! Seriously, I hate them normally but this one was quite good. And you know that ending is set up for future episodes. We now know that the Doctor and Donna are worshipped as gods in Roman times so we should expect to see that carried forward to the modern day as some sort of "Cult of the Doctor". Next week - the Ood return. Can't wait
Jakester

RTD has said that every episode will foreshadow the finale. Exactly what foreshadows the finale in this episode is up for grabs...
In episode 4.01, it was:
Rose's appearance
In episode 4.02, I think it might be
The notion of fixed events that cannot be changed.
I wonder if Bad Wolf will make a reappearance. I don't think it was ever satisfactorily explained how those messages showed up, only why they were there.

Apparently it is something to do with the "Medusa Cascade" as one of the soothsayers mentioned about the Doctor's real name being "...written across the stars, in the very cascade of Medusa herself...." or something like that in the last episode set in Pompeii.
It is something to do with a rift opened up by the Master at the end of series 3, but closed by the Doctor.... I am betting that is how Rose is finding her way back. And don't forget a hand picked up the Master's ring at the end of S3 as if it was significant.
Jakester
04-15-2008, 06:10 AM
Smooth, Dalton. Very smooth. I need to go back and re-watch the S3 finale, because I had forgotten all about the ring.
Daltons Chin Dimple
04-15-2008, 07:33 AM
The speech by the Master, when confronting the dishevelled and aged Doctor at the end of S3 was :
"I can remember the days when that famous Doctor, he was waging a Time War, battling Sea Devils, and Axons, he sealed the rift at Medusa Cascade, single handed. And look at him now. How did he ever come to this? Oh yes! Me!"

Alright episode this week, nothing spectacular.
I like the Ood.
Also another reference to the bee population going down. Bizarrest re-occuring theme ever?
Daltons Chin Dimple
04-22-2008, 04:40 AM
The Bee thing is real. All over the world bees are just dissappearing. Either they are following the dolphins off world in a "So long, and thanks for all the pollen" kind of way or they are just not reproducing anymore.
It is very serious for the environment due to the nature of their interaction with pollen and could have very serious consequences for mankind as a whole.
RTD might be working this into the story.
Metuzalem
04-22-2008, 06:48 AM
Oh I know the bee thing is real, I just found it odd that they keep making such a big deal of it on the show. To me, it suggests what you say, that it will evolve into a story arc in it's own right.
Jakester
04-22-2008, 08:48 AM
Apparently the bee disappearance happend in the 60's as well and it resolved itself. That doesn't mean that there's no reason to be unconcerned, because, clearly, disappearing bees makes our ice cream more expensive.
Seriously, though, the last thing we need is 1/3 of the food supply affected by beelessness, thereby driving the already increasing costs of everything up even higher.
Metuzalem

Dalton totally called it with this Medusa Cascade thing. Now the Doctor wants to take Donna there.
And those guys do look like potatos.
Daltons Chin Dimple
04-28-2008, 02:05 AM
Is it just me or do the Sontarans have a serious case of "Short Man Syndrome" ??
I am betting that the rift in time and space that the Doctor sealed single handedly at the Medusa Cascade during the Time War is not quite as sealed as previously thought, paving the way for a return of Rose and maybe even the Daleks and the rest of the Time Lords.
Metuzalem
04-28-2008, 03:40 AM
Or maybe he's yet to seal it in the first place? That's the thing with time travel, maybe things that are in the past are really in the future and vice versa. Past, present and future are all relative to the observer so when the Master was talking about the events at Medusa Cascade maybe they were in his past but our future.

Fun episode! It was great to see Martha again, even though we saw her not that long ago on Torchwood. Her warning to Donna was pretty interesting. Not untrue, but she seems to be a lot more cautious about the overall good he does; not that he doesn't do good -- it reminded me of one of the knocks against Batman, that just by being Batman, he attracts an element that would not otherwise exist, or be so extreme.

Another good episode. Jenny is adorable, and Georgia is certainly MILFalicious in a big way. It'd be pretty cool if the long gap between S4 and S5 were filled with a one-off Jenny series, or if she were to head to...say....Cardiff? Oh...and while in Cardiff, she could have a lusty and explicit tryst with one Sally Sparrow! Yeah!

I dug it. I was surprised to see Dr. Corday show up (playing a doctor, no less!).
And her meeting the Doctor hin her past/his future! And possibly as another regenerated doctor...and that look she gave Donna when Donna asked what happened to her...yowza!
Lots of set-up that I'm afraid we're going to have to wait for the 2010 season for, or at least the 2009 movies. That's mean!

KingVoyeur

That library ep was fantastic, just finished "The Forest of the Dead" on YouTube (I'm too impatient for the Sci-Fi Channel to catch up). Only two more eps till the two-part season finale, and apparently Rose is supposed to show up in the third to last ep.
Final Four eps on BBC:
"Midnight": The Doc and Donna decide to take a break and relax on the planet Midnight. While Donna sunbathes (and has minimal screen-time this ep), the Doctor takes a bus to the Sapphire Waterfall. However, something else has come along for the ride...
"Turn Left": (from Wikipedia) Attending a carnival on the "Chino-planet of Shan Shen" exposes the Doctor and Donna to flags, pagodas and local colour. But when cajoled to have her fortune read for free, Donna's past is carefully examined - for a specific single event. Meanwhile, something creeps towards Donna's back. With Donna's world collapsing around her, this time the Doctor cannot help -- only a woman thought lost in a parallel world can. The Darkness is coming as Rose Tyler and Donna team up before it is too late.
"TBA": The title has not been revealed as "it would give away too much."
"Journey's End": The big finale of series 4 is here, with a climax that has been building since Series 1. Guest stars abound, including Captain Jack, Sarah Jane Smith (both have confirmed they're in the 4th series, and since they haven't shown up yet, this would be a logical episode for them), Harriet Jones (confirmed)and apparently too many more to name (it's very hush-hush). In regards to the finale, Russell T. Davies himself states: "You've got to watch and listen closely. It's been seeded for a long time, with small but vital references going all the way back to Series One."

Big bad villain of the final 3 eps of the season is Davros. He's back with a red dalek in tow and he wants the Doctor dead.

I'm unfamiliar with the Big Bad -- I didn't begin watching Who 'til the 2005 series restart. Never could get into it before. I'm keen to see how all of this plays out, though.
Daltons Chin Dimple
06-18-2008, 08:08 AM
This is the skinny on him :
Davros is a scientist from the planet Skaro whose people, the Kaleds, were engaged in a bitter thousand-year war of attrition with their enemies, the Thals. Horribly scarred and crippled during this war with only one functioning arm and one cybernetic "eye" mounted on his forehead (remind you of something ?) he depends completely upon a self-designed mobile life-support chair which enclosed the lower half of his body and is reminiscent of a certain, shall we say, pepperpot like race very well known to the Doctor. In fact Davros is a megalomaniac who believes that through his creations, the aforementioned pepperpotty style race, he can become the supreme being and ruler of the universe. He is a brilliant scientist who has demonstrated mastery of robotics, metallurgy, chemistry, artificial intelligence, cloning, genetic engineering, biology, military tactics, and cybernetics.

07-01-2008, 01:40 AM
Jakester, here are some of my half baked theories.
When you first saw the Doc in the Tardis in this episode the camera did a slow pan past his old hand bubbling away in it's glass case. This was to remind us of it for some reason. Also, when the regen started, it started with the same hand that got cut off, and a lingering shot of that hand regenerating.
Now remember in Tennant's first full episode, the Xmas special at the end of season 1, he had his hand cut off and was able to regrow it due to residual energy left over from his regen from Ecclestone. I am betting that the hand has some part to play in this.
Ranting, mad as a balloon full of badgers Dalek Caan also said "He is coming, the threefold man is coming!" so I am thinking maybe the regen will involve multiple Doctors. Maybe more than one version of Tenant (driven by the spare hand somehow?) or the return of some old Doctors as per old, multi Doc episodes from the past.
Also, Caan said "The most faithful servent will die!" which everyone assumes will be Donna or Rose but that could actually be Sarah Jane who has, afterall, been doing Doctor-assistant type stuff since the days of John Pertwee. That is pretty faithful.
Finally, Donna still appear to have something on her back ! So maybe not the bug thing from the espisode Turn Left at all? Not forgetting the Medusa Cascade. Remember that the Master at the end of the last season said that he saw the Doctor single handidly seal the rift at Medusa Cascade.... but it is not sealed in this timeline...... ????
Everyone has said that Donna is different, that the Doctor is drawn to her for some reason. And that she is a very important person in the scheme of the universe. Well, when she was sitting on the stairs at the Shadow Proclamation, what was that she heard ? Was it the sound of drums ??? Does the Master still have to see the Doc seal the cascade at Medusa ? Does a chameleon circuit have something to do with this ?
And finally, if Dalek Caan can get into a timelocked event like the Time War, then who else can get into it, or out of it ? Will we see the return of the Timelords ?
Just my crazy musings.

Jakester
07-05-2008, 05:34 AM
I don't believe that they cut any of The Doctor. It's usually 42-45 minutes, which is pretty much what most TV shows are after commercials are removed.
Torchwood was routinely close to an hour, IIRC, and we all know it had scenes and language that BBCA felt the need to edit. It still galls me that they claim that alternately "the law" and "FCC regulations" prevented them from showing the series unedited, when, in point of fact, any broadcast network could air it unedited any time after 10pm, and cable channels, even basic ones, are still not subject to FCC rules. I'm reminded of the words of Carol Kane when she said, "LIAR! LIIIAAAARR!"

"Journey's End" was great. It'll need 1.5 - 2 hours on Sci-Fi. It's actual runtime is 1:03.

Gonna miss Granddad more than Donna, but she certainly grew on me.

I thought the first series or season of Torchwood was pretty uneven, but not terrible. I think it suffered a bit from trying too hard to be daring and "adult." The second series was less "adult" in terms of sexuality and language, but was much more solid.
I certainly don't think that a show needs to have nudity or swearing to be a compelling drama, but I liked that the option is available in Torchwood.
Any idea what's up with the 5 episode order for S3? Do the ratings suck ass?

:( *tear*
That was sad, but good at the same time. I really loved how everyone from the Whoniverse was involved in some way. I like the "Children of Time" name the big D gave them. It really gave closure to the first four years of the new series.
I was laughing my butt off when Doc #2 grew and had some of Donna's characteristics and they were yelling at each other
and was practically cheering when Doctor Donna kicked into high gear and started fucking with the Daleks. Awesome! It's too bad she couldn't have hung around for a while, it'd be interesting to see what that half-human/half-time lord brain could imagine. She almost fixed the TARDIS' chameleon circuit!
But now I'm sad cause there's no more sci-fi TV goodness until the Dr. Who Xmas special followed by the final eps of BSG (I guess there's Heroes in the fall, but it's kinda 50/50 after last season). Again, *tear*

Confused - please to be setting me straight. When can I enjoy these lovely sounding eps in HD, as in on Sci Fi? Much thanks.

Whenever Sci-Fi airs them, you silly girl! Maybe they'll be doing a Dr. Who S4.5 (even though there's only two episodes left) as well and you'll see them in 2010.

I think they're supposed to start again this Friday with "Midnight", then "Turn Left", then the 2 part finale.

Weeks ago my friend. While I was locked out. And you guys were talking about it as if you'd seen it so I didn't think to post!
Sue me.
I TRIPLE-DOG-DARE YOU!!!
Back to reality, yeah, I wasn't really impressed compared to the last couple of finales to be perfectly honest. I just felt kind of let down :Dunno:

I meant the crew who watched on Sci-Fi here in the states, like Negs.
I liked it a lot. Good way to end Davies' run, and I didn't feel we had a huge deus ex machine resolution like we tend to get with his stories. I suppose one could argue that Donna was very deus ex machina, but it worked well enough.

I dunno. I just felt that the series was building up to something *more* than what we actually got.
Take for instance the library double episode. That's one of the best they've done and it opened up so many possibilities for the future, the finale seemed kind of weak compared to it if you ask me.

Sci Fi is airing the final this Friday, Aug. 1. So I haven't seen it yet, but I am full of anticipation, with all the crazy stuff that's led up to it.

The most recent episode I saw ended with the Doctor running toward Rose, then getting zapped by a Dalek. They brought him back to the Tardis, presumably to regenerate.
I would have thought that was a great cliffhanger (I have no clue if Tennant is signed for another season), except that Sci Fi immediately showed a preview for next week where it looks like the Doctor is in the same form.
Of course, if I've completely misinterpreted things, DON'T TELL ME.

Wasn't the library 2-parter by Stephen Moffatt ? In which case, I imagine the saga of River Song will be resolved when Moffatt takes over as show runner in 2009/2010.
Hopefully we can also move away from the high-camp and "macguffin solves all" approach that is a bit too prevelant in New Who.

Okay, Negs. I will say that the UK got no post-credits teaser IIRC.
I'd love for Moffat to resolve the River Song storyline! That was brilliant!

Neg, I had the same thought. "Oh my gosh! He's regenerating!" Followed by a lackluster, "Oh, well, there he is next week, so, never mind."
My good friend Phil would just tell us all not to ever watch coming attractions, but he's not here, is he? :-)

I may watch it again.

There were things I really loved about the episode. I totally did not expect Mickey and Jackie to show up, and I just about cheered when they did.
I was THIS CLOSE to turning to my husband and saying, "You know, it bothers me that they haven't brought back K-9" when at the last minute they did!
But I thought the ending, with what happens to Donna, is just cruel. All throughout the series we get to hear her say that she's just temp, she's nobody special. And now she gets to be somebody special...but she'll never, EVER know it. This combined with the losing of her "husband" even though he saw her, makes for one cruel, lousy "F%^*$@ you" to Donna from the universe.

Yeah, the Donna thing was sad. Still, there may be a macguffin to get her back in the game. I expect that's it for her, at least as a regular, though.

And I really loved Catherine Tate's portrayal. Her "Doctor donna" was brilliant. I also loved her whole attitude - like how she never got jealous of the other companions - she was genuinely HAPPY that the Doctor got reunited with Rose.

Tate did a great Doctor impression!
Yeah, 'Tuz, I heard that. Not really sure how credible it is, though. I mean, Barrowman didn't get the part of "Will" on Will & Grace because he wasn't gay enough. So they gave it to a straight guy?!
Maybe he won't get Cap'n 'cuz he's still not gay enough.

Here's John Barrowman as a blonde (and yes, I see the irony of him being dressed as a Nazi in the photo, especially if the film focuses on WWII Cap). Just crop the hair shorter and bulk him up (which wouldn't take a whole lot) and I could definitely see it...

wow he looks so wierd as a blond... is tha from.... wait, where IS that picture from?
just DONT WATCH THE TEASER TRAILERS!
(i personally dont think thats it for Donna Noble, somebody somewhere is gonna burst her bubble (its a very delicate bubble she's in) and when somebody "activates" her past Dr. Who memories...she'll die.. well we cant have THAT happen can we? no the doctor will have to save her because thats the type of person he is....that and the fact that he's got blood on his hands from far too many people)
I missed part 1 due to me being at ComicCon, can somebody post a link from youtube?

It's from his cameo in The Producers, he played the main Nazi in the "Springtime for Hitler" song. It's an odd picture too, it's a little distorted. I can still see him as Cap though with shorter hair and more buff.
As for Donna Noble, I agree, I don't think we've seen the last of her. She went through more shit in this season than Rose or Martha had to go through, she deserves some kind of break.

Tennant Steps Down As Doctor Who
29 October 2008 11:57 PM, PDT
Actor David Tennant will quit his role as Doctor Who next year.
The star has decided to step down as the Time Lord after filming wraps on four TV specials of the cult sci-fi show, due to be screened in late 2009 and 2010.
Tennant announced his departure on Wednesday night during the National TV Awards in London.
Appearing via video link, he told the audience: "I'm very excited because in January I go back to Cardiff to do four new specials which will see me through to 2009 - but when it returns in 2010 it won't be with me.
"Don't make me cry. The 2009 shows will be my last, I love this show and if I don't take a deep breath now, I never will and you will be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair.
"It's been the most brilliant, mad, amazing, life-changing time over the last three and a half years. There is a whole 2009 before I leave. Thank you for watching it, loving it, and being so enthusiastic."

You know what, I LOVE him as the Doctor, but I also loved Christopher Eccleston so I'm totally optimistic about the future. HOWEVER....
somewhere in the back of my Whovian brain lurks a memory of an episode which states a Time Lord may only regenerate 13 times. What number are we up to? I used to be able to recite them all by heart, but now, damn, I'm old.

He's the 10th doctor, so there's 3 to go.
