Wonderfully thoughtful science fiction writer, and one of the very few black women writers in the field. Wrote very atypical science fiction. No space opera, no stories based on established movie/TV/game properties. Just her thoughts, tripping the mind fantastic.

I'll miss her, but her work is still out there for others to discover, others looking for imaginary journeys beyond the same ol' same ol'.

I was very sad to see the news of Octavia Butler's passing. She was one of my favorite authors in the genre, and certainly had a unique perspective to her fiction. Her "Xenogenesis" trilogy is one of my favorite works, but I think "Kindred" is the one book of hers everyone should read, even if they aren't a big fan of speculative fiction. She was way too young to leave us, and I mourn the books she won't be around to write.

Slate (http://www.slate.com/id/2137269/) has a nice obit on her.
