View Full Version : Is it food (not oil) that's the real global crisis?

Economists believe that with the growing middle classes in China and India, and rising fuel prices we will have a food crisis within six months (http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=213343).

A new crisis is emerging, a global food catastrophe that will reach further and be more crippling than anything the world has ever seen. The credit crunch and the reverberations of soaring oil prices around the world will pale in comparison to what is about to transpire, Donald Coxe, global portfolio strategist at BMO Financial Group said at the Empire Club's 14th annual investment outlook in Toronto on Thursday.

"It's not a matter of if, but when," he warned investors. "It's going to hit this year hard."

Also, British security agencies believe that society is “four meals away from anarchy” (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article492642.ece).

MODERN civilisation may not be quite as safe as we thought. Britain’s security services have been privately warning their staff that western societies are just 48 hours from anarchy.

MI5’s maxim is that society is “four meals away from anarchy”. In other words, the security agency believes that Britain could be quickly reduced to large-scale disorder, including looting and rioting in the event of a catastrophe that stops the supply of food.

What do you think? Should we start stockpiling our food water and guns, or is this just another Y2K exaggeration?

i totally agree. i mean the united states has many overweight people, our restaraunts overfeed us by ramping up the portions and sporting us with huge calorie appetizers and desserts its no wonder we're obese peeps.

if this doesnt off the human race, it will serve as a wakeup call to all of us.

speaking of food... i'm hungry

It's not pretty, and I am at work right now, but a close friend just called me from Hawaii, and we got onto these and related subjects as we always do. He told me to check out

Just a random thought about all of this, though, for right now.....

Unless there is a radical shift in global consciousness, and that we reverse the damage we've done, unless we bring population spread to an absolute halt, implement alternative energy sources, and switch from a capitalist economy, we're fucked.

In other words.....

We're fucked.

No, starvation and energy over-consumption are just symptoms of the crisis. WE'RE the crisis, and here's a lovely little theme song that pretty much illustrates my world view, as well!
