Anyone remember this show? Steven Spielberg produced, Rockne S O'Bannon (Farscape, Alien Nation) created. I loved this show about a submarine and it's crew, like a much better Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

This poor show was so abused during it's run, yet made some great TV scifi anyway.

Any fans here besides me?

I definitely enjoyed the first season. Don't remember many specifics, though.

The couple of episodes I saw were among the worst SciFi I'd ever seen. Don't know which season they were in. One had them run into Neptune, a phenomenon which "predated time", but yet they didn't even use its original Greek name. Thought that was pretty dumb.

Some say that the show deterioriated with each season. Really good in the first to really wretched in the third. I remembered enjoying all three. I now have season one on DVD and am really enjoying it, so I'll probably take a chance on the other two.

And review here.

Really wretched by the end, huh? No wonder Jonathan Brandis offed himself. Oooh, is it still too soon?

Well, his character started out as a Wesley Crusher-esque wunderkind. In season three, he was a comissioned Navy ensign.

I forgot about the fact Brandis offed himself.

Huh.

I thought it had the same problem that a lot of sci-fi shows suffer - terrific pilot episode, but got mundane after a few weeks. Plus it was just too well-meaning - right down to having that guy (Bob Ballard, IIRC) delivering the mini-lecture over the end credits.

And as for Darwin...

Actually, I liked Darwin. To justify his position in the crew, he was even given rank and a service number. Once they explained that to him, even that he was getting 0-1 pay, he wanted to spend it.

I watched a few episodes, . . .

Didn't it become "Voyage to the Bottom of the Ratings" ?

And then do a total change in direction for the third season including Michael Ironside coming in, and turn into some war show ? One minute I was watching something like ST-TNG, then next thing I know I am watching Saving Private Ryan, only more damp and talking dolphins !!

I just kept waiting for the episode where a giant man eating shark came after captain, played by Roy Scheider

Ones view of the show depends on which season you watched because it was, functionally, a different show every season. First season was a decent semi-hard sci-fi show. Second season is a classic example of why network execs should NEVER be allowed to "fix" a show. Third season was actually an upswing IMHGO. Decent military sci-fi.

I finished the season one DVD set. I LOVED season one, liked what they were trying to do. And I dig submarines. Nicely done. And some of the characters who left in season two, like Krieg, I will really miss, tho Krieg does make an appearance in season three.

Looking forward to season two...
