View Full Version : White Apocalypse...

Well, it always happens. I'm the on call guy for this station for a week, and mother nature decides to crap on me. Big, white, fluffy crap. This week, it looked like I had dodged the frosty bullet. But NOOOOOO...Friday morning, I'm up, ready for "rescue carry" Physical training, out the door of my apartment and...here comes one of my co-workers, crying, clearly distraught. She's a bit of a drama queen and known for throwing fits. But this is different. She's in actual physical pain, having taken a nasty spill on the snow in the parking lot, hitting her car on the way down. I bring her in and turn her over to my roommate, who is a close friend of hers. He gets her to the Army Hospital in Heidelberg, while I hit the highway to head to the station.

Going slow....too slow. But I'm already late so whatthehell? I get off the Autobahn, pass Stem Kasern, turn right at the light...and my car decides to slide leftward, independent of my wishes.

And then half of my car is off the road.

Damn...

Luckily, I'm on a part where alot of people who work on the same post I do pass thru, so a very nice lady gave me a ride. Later, you had five soldiers trying to remove my car, but she ain't going anywhere. One of my sergeants ended up using his German auto service to help my car out of her predicament. She's ok, and so am I. But just a little faster, and both she and I would have been rolling down the hill.

Snow, so much fun when a kid, and now as a working adult, a pain in the ass.

Hmm. This "snow" of which you speak. We have it here where we want it to be, at the ski resorts, you know, Big Bear, Mammoth Mt., etc. Perhaps you should petition the government of Germany to move further south. You know, make Germany a tropical island or something.

:)

They might as well try South. Last time they tried moving East and West, there were a few problems. :smirks:

Hm. Snow. Here in da South, such an event is so rare, it's practically an urban legend. And if so much as a light dusting occurs, not unlike dandruff,
the whole city of Atlanta shuts down and becomes atrophied.

It's quite sad, really. :smirks:

No kidding, even a THREAT of snow down here in Dallas, they start closing schools and businesses.

Plus, they don't seem to understand the concept of salting roads after icy precipitation.

This year has been Veeery mild. You Southerners have gotten it worse than us.

Last year though, the snow bank in front of my house reached 6 feet on either side of my driveway. My front yard was 4 feet or so deep in natural precip and drift.

When it gets really bad they call out dump trucks and front end loaders to haul away snow and dump it in the river. this is an actual shot from Rochester in after a storm in 2000

It rained this morning in Southern California. :(

Temperatures dipped way down into, like...the 50's.

And everything was like....all wet. :(

But the sun came out after breakfast and everything was like.... all nice. :)

Actually, the interesting thing about Germany is, the further south you go, the colder it gets. Because the southern parts of Germany are generally higher in altitude. Curious, that.

Yeah, and I remember those things. When Germans get restless, the rest of Europe tends to get nervous. S'happened three times, twice last century.

Preciate it, K. Ah, I usually have no problems. Just a bit of a miscalculation on my part. When I first got here, I wasn't used to all the train tracks they have everywhere. That almost cost me, too.

Yeah, Dallasites tend to panic in icy weather. And the maniacs on the freeway are even more maniacal. I worked traffic radio news during a massive ice storm in the late 90s one Monday morning. We were eating it that morning, fer sure.

And reality TV addicts.

But they're really the same thing, right?

Kidding.

That's in Sausalito. Here in SF proper, it's just been cold with rain on and off. The last time it snowed here was when I was 4 or 5 years old...and then it only lasted for about an hour.

So have fun shoveling out your driveway tomorrow ID.

Yeah. Here in Calif we use snow for FUN. Where you are from snow is another obstacle to anything you want to do in winter. You can't get away from it unless you leave your home for warmer climates. Here, we usually have to travel a little bit to even get to the usable snow, and then, when we are done with it, we can go home and enjoy clear streets and usually sunshine.

Hey K-man do you Get WIVB and WNLO TV Stations around where you live?

Kaeos
03-31-2006, 12:25 PM
I think those are both Buffalo stations, I pass through there once a week when I'm working.

I'm way east of there, about 2 1/2 hours - the little pop-up label that says Sodus Point is where I am.

Ok. We control all on air content for WIVB/WNLO here in Indianapolis IN. using Fiber lines to stream the video.
