View Full Version : True Blood

Another one that's been released to the wild.
The premise is that vampires are real and they've "come out" two years ago when some Japanese company developed a perfect synthetic blood, called Tru Blood. It's sold in 4 packs at convenience stores. Also, vampire blood is now a new drug for the humans, and vampires will pay humans money to let them get bitten.
Sookie works at the local Louisiana small town bar. She's smart and hot like Anna Paquin ('cuz it is Anna Paquin). Also at the bar is a gay construction worker behind the grill, a smart-mouthed sista, who is Sookie's best friend, and there's her boss who's in love with her. Oh yeah...Sookie can read people's minds. Things get interesting when the town gets its first vampire.
And I absolutely LOVED this show. It's got sex, nudity, vamps, and humour. Alan Ball is pretty damned good. If you've seen Six Feet Under or American Beauty, you already knew that.

Premiered last night. People who have seen the first 5 episodes say it's not as good as Six Feet Under, but they still like it. HBO's been promoting the heck outta this thing, that's for sure.
What did you guys think?

I saw the unfinished pilot a while ago, and I wasn't that impressed. Anna Paquin's character was interesting, but the rest of the cast didn't click with me, especially the lead vampire dude. The story itself wasn't that interesting either, but I very rarely think pilots pull off a great story.
So, True Blood didn't do enough for me to try and keep up with it regularly. I've got too many other shows that I'd rather be watching.

I too saw the unfinished pilot. I did DVR the actual pilot but haven't finished it yet.
I agree with you on the lead vampire, but I found the rest of the cast to be at least somewhat interesting, with Sookie's brother being at the bottom of the list. Still, Alan Ball has earned enough goodwill from me with American Beauty and Six Feet Under for me to give it more time. Plus, it's vampires and Anna Paquin in tight shirts (and hopefully, eventually topless).
I don't know what else I'm picking up -- Dollhouse and maybe Leverage and Fringe (which I really didn't like very much).

I just hope this isn't some kind of thinly veiled romeo & juliet / beauty and the beast remake. They seem to love to do that with vampires. The vampire in love with the human has been done to death. But I will continue to watch because It has lots of nudity! Yah Nudity! Female nudity makes everything better! It's why Mad Men's ratings are dropping like a stone: No female nudity!

You wouldn't say that if you applied that rule to Oprah or Rosie O'Donnell.

I liked the second episode more than the first, and I dig how they're ending them on cliffhangers. That's pretty fun, and unusual for HBO.
And, Jaysus, could Sookie have been any hotter in that dress?
Great show so far!

So far I love this show. Haven't read any of the books, but I find everything about it great. Anna Paquin is neither here nor there but her character is a hoot. She cracks up laughing in all the right places to bust up the vampire's campy melodrama. Lafayette, the cook/construction worker is sublime. I hear he's also in the movie "The Express." Tara is pretty hilarious! The brother is... virile.
The boss most concerns me. There's something up with him. He's always nearby when Sookie needs help, yet he never comes to her rescue. That ain't right.
And Bill, the vampire? I can't stop laughing! The actor is British and he is killing me with this dark cloud, melodramatic interpretation of an old-fashioned vampire in modern times. Even he says 'Sookie' makes me laugh. "May I call on you some time?"
The balance of humor, melodrama and romance is perfect. Keep it comin', HBO!
And IMDB states that Michelle Forbes is up for 3 episodes this season...

I love the way everyone says "Sookie." It's almost like "Suck-y."
Episode 3 was again a lot of fun. I'm glad it got a second season.
Now if HBO would just sort out the final season or movies for Deadwood....
(I know...ain't gonna happen)

I love it too! Especially when Bill does his whole old-timey, broody thing. Sookie... Just kills me.
Episode 3 was kind of a whirlwind. I loved all but that last few minutes there. Dawn put me over the moon with that gun-toting tirade. Limp d*** motherf***er! I fell over laughing. It was a shock to see Tara and Sam get together so soon. Jason's descent is clear. And Lafayette is kinda terrifying now.
Too bad about Dawn. She was fabulous!

I don't know if I love the show, or just love Anna Paquin. I expect that it's both.
Bill and the cop was really damn cool and unnerving. Loved it.
WTF was up with Sam at the end? I did glean some spoilers about his character from the book series' wikipedia pages, but nothing really helps explain what the hell he did at the end of the episode.
Sookie's brother is a moron. And yet, he's grown on me. I wanted him to die in the first episode, but now...well, his blister and his eggplant were damn funny.

I don't know if I love the show, or just love Anna Paquin. I expect that it's both.I think this is how I feel about the show right now. The show is kind of fun, but Anna Paquin is the reason I'm still interested at this point. Though, I keep liking more and more things about the show after every episode, so that's not entirely the reason I want to watch the show any more.
It looks like I am about an episode behind you guys as I just watched the third episode this weekend. I'll probably get around to watching the fourth episode just in time for the fifth one to air.

I think the end meant Sam is the killer. He's killing women who sleep with vampires. Probably thinks they're tainted. He had the keys to Maudette's storage unit on his keychain? Come on.
Jason's antics are leaving me on the floor. A blister? Who abuses themselves to that extent? He had to be convinced to go to a hospital?!
Sookie's corny outfits are confusing? Why is everything so short? She shows a lot of skin for a good Southern gal. And that outfit for the club? Who would wear that to a club? A church social, sure, but a nightclub? Tres corny.
This show keeps me hooked, that is for sure.

Not a Paquin fan but I am liking this show more & more with each episode.
We finally got to see one of the elder's in Eric. Hopefully we'll get to meet the elder chic vampire this season.
I liked how Lafayette beat on those fools at the restaurant. Lafayette is one funny dude.
I agree that Sam is the killer and he's killing chics who sleep with vampire. I think he killed Sookie's grandma to get Sookie to hate vampires thus she won't want anything to do with Bill.

Come on. They've made it clear that the younger you are the better you taste. Of all people that old lady is one of the least attractive vampire victims. Not to mention who would believe would waste all that blood?
I think Sam killed her 'cause he's a freak. He did it in a rage. Maybe because Adele was a vamp-sympathizer. I was just so shocked. How awful.
I wonder if the woman who turned Bill is the one he threatened Malcolm with. I'm hoping they show a flashback where he killed her. Or will she turn up and it'll be a battle over who Bill belongs to?

They broke their own rules already! If you become a vampire when you are on the edge of death and drink a vampire's blood then why didn't Sookie become a vampire? He said she was about to die when he fed her his blood! It's only the first season and they already screwed up their own internal logic! HAHAHA Losers! BTW what happened to all the cool female nudity?
Jakester
10-12-2008, 04:08 PM
I agree about the nudity.
Regarding Bill giving Sookie blood: he didn't give her enough blood. The impending death wasn't from loss of blood, but from her injuries. She just got enough V blood to heal her wounds. Subtle difference, but it didn't break the rules. Loser.
hanso
10-12-2008, 06:42 PM
I thought in order to be turned the vampire needs to bite you and then the victim has to drink the vamp's blood.
Bill didn't bite Sookie. The vamp that turned Bill, bit him and then forced him to drink so he wouldn't die.

So if the more V blood you drink the more of a vampire you become then why when Jason drank the vile of Vampire blood, the effects weren't permanate. They wore off after his little trip to the doctor. Shouldn't the effects have been permanate, all be it in a minor capacity compared to Sookie's new Vampire powers, that they never seem to reference anymore.

It wouldn't matter. Loss of blood is loss of blood, how it was lost would be irrelevant.
BTW Sookie flashed her boobies! Hurray it's the return of Female nudity! AMC's Madmen when will you learn? Loser!

-Fan, you really need to fucking pay attention to the show. Or at a minimum, stop being a moron.
And on that note, True Blood is now officially the best television show EVAR! Anna Paquin said 'fuck'. Anna Paquin french kissed a dude. ANNA PAQUIN SHOWED ME HER BOOBIES!. I saw them over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and then I had a cigarette.
I might have to get an HD television just for this episode.

Sam is more confusing than ever. And also Tara. They're both aware he did nothing but push up on Sookie at every turn and yet they talking like they're trying to build a relationship? How do you use "no strings" and "I want something real" in the same conversation? Please don't let him Tara. She might have might moved to the top of the list with that toss of the pants.

Right, Belle, it should be obvious to Tara that she would be second fiddle at best with Sam. I suppose if they hook up anyway, it could make for some drama, but it's silly, obvious drama, and I'm not too keen on seeing that played out.
Did I mention that I saw Sookie's boobies?

Not sure I'm following you NotAFan. Loss of blood is loss of blood but Bill didn't bite Sookie. That was the difference between how Bill was made into a vampire and how Sookie wasn't.
The chic vamp bit him, drained him and then forced him to drink. Sookie was losing blood and drank Bill's blood but she wasn't bitten.
I think Sam is that dog that keeps popping up. They shown him a few times during the series. Tara said Sam barks in his sleep and Sam went to sniff the murdered chic's bed sheets.

Yes but objectively what does the biting add on a genetic level that drinking someone's blood doesn't, nothing I can discern. So it shouldn't make a difference in turning someone into a vampire.
I think Sam is that dog that keeps popping up. They shown him a few times during the series. Tara said Sam barks in his sleep and Sam went to sniff the murdered chic's bed sheets.
This part is confussing as they obviously want you to think that, but in the same episode that he barks in his sleep, there is a scene where he plays fetch with the dog, so at the very least the dog exists independantly of Sam. If the Sam/dog connection isn't a red herring, which it very well might be, then I suspect it would be more of an astro-projection type thing.

Just three episodes left?! Dang!
It looks like Jason might be getting a clue.
We finally learned Sam's deep, dark secret.
Does Tara (and did her Mom) really have a demon in her, or is that lady a quack? I'm still undecided. I don't know what sort of rules this world has RE: demons.

Read no further if you haven't seen the finale yet.
Great closer! What's up with Admiral Cain? It was pretty obvious that she's up to something, but what? How does she know Sam? How is she going to frak up Tara even more?
I always thought Renee was awesome! I'm bummed that he won't be around next season. *sigh* I guess having him as the killer didn't totally come from out of left field. I (very) briefly entertained the possibility early on, but decided against it 'cus I dug his Cajun accent.
Oh...and
Lafayette! Noooooooooo!
Belledame

Uh the killer was revealed in the penultimate episode, via fax. Not the finale. And I called that one. He was the only mainly purposeless character that was too plugged into the characters (and was too supportive of everyone esp. Sookie). Also, when Sookie was attacked in the restaurant, on the second airing I caught a clear glimpse of the killer's arm and hair. Enough to peg it.
Maryann is odd. I wasn't sure about the phasing thing she was doing. Best bet is she gave Sam a hand up, but that depends on what she is (age). I thought she was running a brothel, but who knows.
Lafayette was only missing for two weeks and he made it back. He didn't seem terrified, just startled and freaked out by whatever rushed him.
What other freaks have come to town..?

I was half asleep at the tail end of the penultimate eppie. I thought it was Rene, but then thought I imagined it (and I fast forwarded through the recap).
Wasn't that meant to be Lafayette in the car?

For some reason I was really bored by the finale. Especially the slasher ending.
I'm mainly looking forward to season 2 for more creature feature. Werepeople and more shapeshifters. They mentioned werewolves in one of the episodes and I just read the back of the books that it's based on to see where they might be headed (I wasn't excited enough to actually read any of them) and there seemed to be more of that. Plus witches.

Of course! Boobies! I want more of Sookie's boobies, obviously. I'm also happy that part of the contract for this show is apparently just nudity for every hot female (and I suppose male, for the ladies) characters and nudity every episode. Because, you know, that's how they do it in the south. And supernaturals like nakedness a lot.

True Blood is a series that has caught the interest of all horror and supernatural drama lovers. The main credit goes to the characters of the show, who are playing their parts very effectively. Viewers have become addictive to see any particular character, and whenever something new happens in his life, viewers’ interest starts growing. The same is the case with True Blood, in which viewers are enthralled with one or the other character of the show. Everyone has different traits that make viewers go crazy to get the show. The same cast with the same spice is carried in season 3 as well, which is compelling viewers to watch True Blood season 3. Many viewers adore Sookie, who has trouble in maintaining long-lasting relationships with humans. Viewers find this trait in her to be very distinctive. In real life, it is quite impossible to find such a girl. Besides this fact, viewers love to know what is happening in her life.
