View Full Version : Clinton supporters threaten to vote for McCain or stay home

I’m surprised no ones brought this up yet. I hope you people weren’t depending on me, because you know how unreliable I am.

Anyway I ran across this editorial.

Your Whiteness is Showing (http://www.counterpunch.org/wise06072008.html)

This is an open letter to those white women who, despite their proclamations of progressivism, and supposedly because of their commitment to feminism, are threatening to withhold support from Barack Obama in November. You know who you are.

I know that it's probably a bad time for this. Your disappointment at the electoral defeat of Senator Hillary Clinton is fresh, the sting is new, and the anger that animates many of you--who rightly point out that the media was often sexist in its treatment of the Senator--is raw, pure and justified.

That said, and despite the awkward timing, I need to ask you a few questions, and I hope you will take them in the spirit of solidarity with which they are genuinely intended. But before the questions, a statement if you don't mind, or indeed, even if (as I suspect), you will mind it quite a bit.

First, for those of you threatening to actually vote for John McCain and to oppose Senator Obama, or to stay home in November and thereby increase the likelihood of McCain winning and Obama losing (despite the fact that the latter's policy platform is virtually identical to Clinton's while the former's clearly is not), all the while claiming to be standing up for women...

For those threatening to vote for John McCain or to stay home and increase the odds of his winning (despite the fact that he once called his wife the c-word in public and is a staunch opponent of reproductive freedom and gender equity initiatives, such as comparable worth legislation), all the while claiming to be standing up for women...

For those threatening to vote for John McCain or to stay home and help ensure Barack Obama's defeat, as a way to protest what you call Obama's sexism (examples of which you seem to have difficulty coming up with), all the while claiming to be standing up for women...

Your whiteness is showing.

I liked Anna Quindlen's Newsweek essay (http://www.newsweek.com/id/141491)on Obama and Clinton supporters. She makes some good points, in particular:

And the estrogen alert that now says female Clinton supporters are going over en masse to John McCain out of pique, spite or rage is way overblown.

The idea that we will illustrate our disappointment by voting Republican is just another insulting suggestion that we're all emotional nut bars.

Certainly there's a lot of it being talked about now, the "Clinton voters going to McCain." But I listen to A LOT of talk radio both Liberal and Conservative all day long wen I am out on the road.

Its the Right Wing Radio and Fox that are fueling this story. I have yet to hear a single "Democratic" or "Liberal" female voter call Bill Press, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartman, Alex Bennett, or Stephany Miller and say they are doing this.

Yet somehow amazingly they seem to call Brian Killmead, Bill Bennett, John Gibson, Spencer Hughes, and Bill O'rielly. Hmm.....:headscratch:

I am certain that when the televised debates begin in earnest those who supported Hillary will be instantly reminded why switching to McCain is the silliest notion ever.

With the campaign for President now officially underway, it's hard to say whether this kind of thing isn't disinformation.

Hell, it could be from someone in Hillary's camp doing this stuff to convince Obama's camp that they need Hillary as VP to win the election.

And seeing how the latest from Reuters says that Obama and Hillary will now be campaigning together...Well, there's something to think on.

Just as the primaries were, a lot of these "articles" and "emails" could be from anyone to keep politicians at bay or convince their own party to do certain things.

It's just overreaction from Clinton's supporters. No one likes to be the loser. As a result, there's a general tendency to lash out, no matter what the situation. Given enough time, however, everyone will settle down and think with a cool head about how much farther McCain is from Clinton than Obama.

Ok, I totally didn't read this thread. I only came in here because I saw sick's name. I totally saw the guy in the yellow sweatshirt last week in Madison!! I almost squealed in delight, and then wished I was at the High Noon Saloon watching him rap.

That's all. :D

OMG!! A POLITICAL THREAD IN THE LOUNGE??!!!!

I'm.... I'm.... verklempt!

I sincerely hope it's a case of news sensationalism fueling the irrational minority making these outlandish threats.

Where's the headline in "Healing Begins - Dems United" ?

Where's the headline in "Healing Begins - Dems United" ?

Give it a few weeks. Clinton and Obama are set to make their first public fund-raising appearance together this week. And like I said, McCain and Obama have yet to take the stage together and debate the issues.

Once both sides of the democratic party are reminded what 4 or 8 years of McCain means to their agenda, the party rift (if once actually even exists) should mend itself.

I wasn't asking, Where's the Headline? as in why isn't the news reporting it.
I meant it in the context as, where's the news or the audience for "Obama Wins. All is Well."

Face it - the newsclips of the fringe Hilary supporters ranting and foaming is a lot more entertaining and traffic driving, than say, shoulder-shrugs and handshakes.

I loved the clip from the ranting airbag a few weeks ago. Especially when security approached her. We live in a dangerous era of YouTube. Watch what you say or do....

I know exactly what you're talking about. I was laid off from the job that took me to Madison about 9 months ago and I have many regrets but the High Noon Saloon on a Wednesday (or was it Thursday) night with the oldest, most unhip, whitest rapper ever (who, to top it all off, looked like he was trying to relive his college days which were much too far gone by) is NOT one. That night was too much freakin' fun, Kah. Unforgettable!

Absolutely. Thanks for that!

Hilary and McCain are so tight on foreign policy issues that I could easily see supporters of the former backing the latter.

I've been gravitating towards Obama lately. But I still can't get past this feeling that his foreign policy is sometimes unfocused, even contradictory. In one speech, he promises to sit down and talk with foreign leaders, including those designated the "axis of evil."

The next, he is promising the Israeli Knesset to do "everything in my power," including the use of force presumably, to stop Iran from getting nukes.

Will the real Obama please stand up? Is he a visionary who will make Americans loved and respected again? Or just another double-talking Democratic tool?

I would very much like to believe the first. Time will tell.

hell Space, I'm a Republican. Obama probably IS a double talking tool (arent they all?) but at this point anyone is better than McCain and our options are fairly limited.

i feel it'll be a blowout... a huge blowout, I cant imagine the majority of people wanting McCain after 8 straight years of Geoge Dubbyah Bush. hopefully I'm right... we'll see.

Well if Obama loses the Clinton vote, he can always count on the White Supremacists vote (http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2008/06/11/president-obama-many-white-supremacists-are-celebrating/).

God, what a bunch of losers.

I'm glad David Duke finally stopped beating around the bush and admitted he still espouses the views of the Klan part-and-parcel. No more of this "scholarly" "maybe the Holocaust did happen, maybe it didn't. We need to study it so I'm going to Iran with every other 'scholarly' anti-Semite in the world" bullshit.

In 2004 I said to myself this country can't possibly think Bush is the right answer for president for the next four years. 51 percent of the people disagreed with me.

My point is this. Do not underestimate the power of the stupid, or suffer John Kerry's fate you will.

yes but WhiteKnight there was one principle problem to overcome with the John Kerry/ John Edwards vote...

i've seem Buckaroo Banzai and I know that all the Aliens from Planet 10 are named "John" and work at Yo-Yo-Dine Labratories!

John Kerry and John Edwards ARE Space Aliens from Planet 10!!

I’ve also heard a rumor that if Obama is elected President, then they are going to finally make the Buckaroo Banzai sequel. They will have to recast of course.

Who do you think, Mark Dacascos, Russell Wong or Keanu Reeves as Bucaroo?

mckracken
06-26-2008, 02:17 PM
believe it or not, the original script for Buckaroo II was later developed into Big trouble in Little China.

i dunno who could pull off Buckaroo Banzai now... I'll have to go look.

and NOT keanu Reeves...please. i think that Buckaroo was perhaps a once in a lifetime gift to mankind.... and sadly it cant be duplicated or repeated.

wow.....lol when one goes on vacation for a while for the bday, one misses out on a lot, first off. Welcome back Space, been awhile, but look forward to your well worded posts....you left wing nutjob you...lol and as for buckaroo...its dead Mckracken, just let it go peacefully into that good night....so it can lay down next to the Halo movie and fade away.....

But onto the real reason im posting......I think all of us, me most of all put too much on the shoulders of a President....too much blame, too much hope, and we expect too much.....as I watch the news everyday CNN, FOX, MSNBC, and so on, I notice as a country we focus wayyyy to much on the President race, and it setting the course for our country. Like i stated...i think we may be wrong on this. One thing the last few years of Bush have proven is how powerless a President can become once he reaches a point of unpopularity such as this. So as a country we turn to the U.S. Congress to take up the reins and help guide us as a nation, and protect the interest of its citizens. I think more then Bush has ever failed us, Congress has failed us more....in standing up to him, in standing up to Big Oil....shit big business period! They work for us, not them but that seems to have faded from their thoughts cause they sure don't act like it. So I think the next president isn't as important as what the next sitting congress is gonna be. I like Obama, but he's too vague and is NOT gonna be a saviour, I like McCain, i got to meet him once, and he was very nice, and for a Senator very plain spoken, that impressed me, and after our brief talk i really did walk away with the impression he loves his job, and country and part of me thinks deep down wants to do good for this Nation.....will he?......I doubt it. We all have to remember basic government on this one, a President can propose law, but Congress makes it. We need a better congress not President, we need leaders not beholden to big business but to its citizens, we need leaders.....not spokesmen for Exxon.

Hey whitetemplar! I like to think of myself as a libertarian or old-school conservative. Actually I would be Republican if it weren't for their crazy foreign policy and authoritarian leanings. Get the government out of our lives, stop spilling American and Muslim blood in the name of the almighty dollar.

I like Obama, but he's too vague and is NOT gonna be a saviour,

I'm beginning to have some reservations too, but I would still support his candidacy. He had the guts and the brains to be against this Iraq nonsense from the start, when John Kerry and the slimy Hillary Clinton were for it. That counts for a lot in my book.

According to the latest polls, there aren't too many Clinton supporters left who will follow through (at least as of this date... I'd like to see how many really have a spine when the time comes to punch that card) that need to hear this or anything else.
