I have just finished reading this graphic novel for the first time and my first impressions are :
What a complete, total, unadulterated mess ! Everything is way too amped up and over the top, eschewing good story and quality artwork in an effort to be cool and edgy. Complete let down after The Dark Knight Returns. Awful experience that doesn't really merit a second reading.

I agree. After finishing it, I just sat there looking at the cover thinking, "WTF?" :headscratch:

That was my exact reaction, followed shortly by "Well, that's two and a half hours of my life I won't get back!" then "I wish I read Batman:Hush or Wanted again instead of this !".
I feel an itch, a need to go to Amazon and buy some graphic novels. I have Watchmen, Batman:Hush, Yr 1, Dark Knight Returns (and Strikes Again) plus all the 30 Days of Night stories, Wanted, Superman Red Son & Man Of Steel and a few others.
As a huge Bat fan, any solid recommendations for me ????

The Killing Joke is great. I also got Gotham By Gaslight a little while ago, it was ok, but it does have artwork by Mike Mignola of Hellboy. I'm trying to get The Long Halloween on ebay, but I haven't read it yet, heard it's good. And, even though it's a Superman graphic novel, you should check out Emperor Joker. Basically, the Joker steals Mr. Mztplk's (or however the hell you spell it) powers and takes over the Earth.

I really disliked (hated, actually) Strikes Again for the exact same reasons you guys mentioned. "What a mess" is right! Sorry, Frank, but that one was EPIC FAIL!
I enjoyed Gotham by Gaslight, although I probably haven't read it since it was originally published.
Arkham Asylum can be credited with getting me into collecting comics (and Batman in particular). That and The Killing Joke.

Long Halloween and Dark Victory are bloody superb ! And if Nolan is mining them (as he seems to be) for his trilogy then his next movie will rock even harder !
