i would start with ultimate xmen(in my opinion the best X book)
-you won't have to deal with so much continuity
if you want more of the classic xmen i would go for New X-Men
and if you like gambit, i would go for Xtreme Xmen, i think he pops up in there every once in a while

I would suggest starting with some New X-Men TPBs, especially E is for Extinction and Riot at Xaviers (if the latter is even out yet).
Ultimate X-Men is also good, if you're looking for often mindless, always exciting adventures. All of those story arcs will be in trade form as well.
However, if you're a Gambit fan, I'd actually suggest buying some back issues of his ongoing series, by Fabian Nicieza and Steve Skroce. That was some good stuff, and probably the best that Gambit's ever been.
Personally, I'd avoid X-Treme X-Men like the plague. It's always inconsistent and the dialogue is laughable.
Uncanny X-Men is...merely good.

Where would i be able to buy any of his series, let alone the back issues?
also, which do you read to keep up w/ story lines since there are different series?
and wat are TPBs?

The series was cancelled a couple years ago, so every issue is now a back issue. Just go into any local comic store (hopefully you have some good ones around) and ask for it specifically. They may have some around. Failing that, you may be able to buy a few at once on eBay.

There ARE quite a few series, that's for sure. Each series has storylines that are separate from the others, so if you read only one, or only two, or whatever, you won't ever be lost.
and wat are TPBs?
Oops, sorry, it didn't occur to me how vague I was being! TPBs is short for trade paperback, which is a collection of a few comic issues into one larger book.
