well I've only just seen it so its a mixture of stuff going through my head but here goes:
wow. This is what the first X-Men SHOULD'VE been, if the powers-that-be had had the confidence in spending the money and putting faith in Singer and co.
Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it so I'll leave out details but there's a whole load of action this time around, more character interplay and the stakes are higher....all the characters were handled well, though Rogue and Cyclops have been alittle short-changed in screen-time but considering the number of new characters and the multi-thread storyline it works.
Some of the film is alittle slow but thats probably just contrasting the fast-pace of the action scenes, beginning with the intro of Kurt 'Vagner' to the no-hold-barred Wolverine snikt-fest at the Mansion....though my only complaint is the enigmatic-of-slightly-obvious ending which begs for an X3......
I'd say 9.8 on the X-ometer
in a nutshell: X2, go see it. even if you're not an x-men fan or a fan of the genre, this is a movie that has to be seen. here's the review (with slight additions) i posted in the "FanViews" section of C2F:
i was lucky enough to get the few remaining tickets to see the advance screening of X2 in melbourne, australia. having front row seats generally has positive connotations, but when it comes to the cinema, its a different story.
i was reluctant to give this movie a 9/10 rating for a few reasons, but first i'll go on about how great i thought the film was.
the first movie had raised the bar in comic-to-film adapations and i thought that it'd be pretty hard to surpass that standard. there were some things which could have been improved on - storm's scenes for example - but overall, it rating pretty high on my list. X2 adressess this problem of a tame expository film by cramming in a whole bunch of flawless action sequences in amongst the plot.
the characters had already been established in the first film, but X2 pushes that even further and the audience learns more about each character as thier powers develop and they make crucial choices. the addition of a few new characters such as pyro and iceman - both well performed - gave the film a more youthful feel, portraying what teenagers would or could do if they had such amazing powers. the film also uses these characters to comment on simple thing such as family, and of course, good versus evil.
performances by previous cast memebers were also fantastic, and especially james marsden in one scene. i also came to like halle berry as storm, which was a major gripe for me in X1.
there are a lot of cameo-type appearances which let the SFX guys have a bit of fun, but the plot focussed on a handful of characters which let them develop thier own personality. mystique, for instance, is pretty damn funny. apart from that, the dialogue offers a bit of insight into the characters, and further validates thier (ie. mystique's) opinion on mutant superiority. some key characters are xavier, magneto, jean, and of course, wolverine.
there is a problem i have with it though - as much as i loved the directing in X1, it didnt have the same elegance in the sequel. perhaps that was to relflect the more action-based film X2 is, but there were a few continuity probelms, and cuts from one scene to another were often abrupt. but that's just me nit-picking.
apart from that slight problem, i loved the movie from beginning to end. it was funny, touching, and action packed - a combination hard to come by in hollywood.
when X2 officially opens in 3 days, i'll be at teh box office and this time i'll get seats up the back!

This film is superb. I got a real kick out of watching it. My biggest fear about the film was all the characters that were going to be in it, but you never felt overwhelmed (and there are loads of character appearances). Also, it feels bigger and it feels more like an ensemble. Certainly it's more involving than the first.
The action set pieces are excellent right from the opening scene (and there are some scenes that are kind of eerie too). Also I've a feeling that Wolverine might have a little competition in the popularity stakes with Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming plays him spot on for me).
Everything is improved upon from a good first film- even the music.
Singer has produce a quality big ass blockbuster film which raises the bar for the genre.
When you see X2, you'll know what X3 is likely to be about if you're familiar with the comic, and that could top this.
One of the best sequels ever made (seeing as few match the original films) and dare I say might be the best comic book movie to date?.

Knack, I would totally agree with you if you said that it was the best C2F ever made, X2 was an amazing film. I'll have a review up for X2 on Smart-Popcorn.com soon enough, so if you really care what I think(and I know you guys don't), browse your way over there and check it out.
Acting was great. Story was great. It was all great. I'll have to work REALLY hard to find a fault that isn't asinine(sp?).

god damn that was incredible, i started clapping when Colossus came on and there were tons of other moments like that. After reading the novelization I had very high standards but this movie went above and beyond these. The whole phoenix thing was just incredible and the ending made the movie that much better and in a way I felt like it was definetly a special nod to comic fans, kinda like, hey you guys know what's going on BUUUUT no one else does, well at least that's how it felt to me. This movie was 10X better than the original and the original was great too! THANKYOU BRYAN SINGER FOR ANOTHER INCREDIBLE MOVIE!

This was more than just a movie, it was an epic! And Thom, your fanview review nailed the movie comparison with another sequel Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan. I think Bryan Singer, being a Trekkie, threw some similarities into X2 directly from that (especially towards the end). This movie should kill Spider-Man's record opening. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face after Nightcrawler's opening scene. That had to be one of the most incredible action sequences ever filmed. I'm starting a campaign to get Bryan Singer nominated for best Director. He frickin' deserves it!

The movie is grrrrrrrreat! I liked it even more than Spider-Man and Spidey was my first comic hero I ever liked as has always been my number one fav so saying X2 I like more is a hard thing to admit to but I would be foolish not to.

I agree, I think the director and script writers were more confident in making this version than the first. Plus we were able to see more recognizable mutants like kitty and collosus. I hope in the next there will be large segments of mutant fighting mutant action, and more characters will show up. And I was happy when I saw beast and the name Remy Lebeau, and of course collosus.
Maybe We will even see the sentinels.
