Just wanted to hear what everyone's favorite/best x-men story arc was.

Mine right now is Return to Weapon X from Ultimate X-Men issues 7-12. I thought that was such a great concept and it just showed how great a writer Millar is.

I usually only stick to the more current stuff (i.e. New X-Men, Ultimate X-Men) stuff but I'm thinking I'm gonna go buy some older X-Men TBPs, so I'm looking for some recommendations

I think I need to read the Phoenix Saga before I can comment on the "best arc". But my favorite story arc has to be Inferno. This was my first introduction to Mr. Sinister and the demon world and stuff like the techno-virus. Plus, at this time my favorite version of the X-Men(Storm as the leader, Wolverine, Havok, Psylocke, Colossus, Rogue, Dazzler, and Longshot) along with Madeline Pryor were believed to be dead by the rest of the world and the original X-Men were known as X-Factor. This is also the arc that turned Madeline into The Goblin Queen and got both teams together for the first time. And since none of the X-Men had seen Jean Grey since she returned it was a classic moment when they saw each other again.

yeah definetly the phoenix saga, though i've never read it, but there are so many TPB's entitled Phoenix Saga, Trial of the Phoenix, are there any X-veterans that can refer me to the best Phoenix tpb.

Well, my opinion so far is that New X-Men is terrible, Uncanny is not much better and X-Force (or whatever that is now) went totally downhill.

Classic stories that I enjoyed most were:

Fatal Attractions: X-Factor #92
X-Force #25
Uncanny #304
X-Men (2nd) #25
Wolverine #75
Excalibur #71

*** The Excalibur story was GREAT!

X-Cutioner's Song: a lot of fans dogged this one, but I still thought it was an interesting read.

X-Tinction Agenda: haven't read all of it, but what I have read, I've loved.

Acts Of Vengeance was interesting all-company crossover in that the villains decided to change opponents, so you got to see some really interesting battles.

Phoenix Saga & Dark Phoenix: anything with the Hellfire Club is bound to be great.

I thought "The Twelve" story that ran for a while was pretty cool.

*****
If you're not just looking for X-Men stuff, but Marvel in general, you HAVE to get Secret Wars!

The Phoenix Saga. Followed close by The Age of Apocalypse.

I also enjoyed Fall of the Mutants.

i must say that i used to loathe new x-men, but i started reading it recently and i love it, i dunno what changed my heart, i think it was the fact that when i saw X2 i felt i needed to read about the classic xmen too (because the only xbook i read besides Exiles, is Ultimate Xmen)So I started to read New X-men and I love it.

Wat issue numbers does the Dark Phoenix Saga and the Hellfire Club run through?

I think in order to apreciate new x men it would be good for a lot of fans to go back and read stan lee's run on the book in comparison to chris clairmounts.

All morrison has done has moved it foward and made it less retro. He's made the characters more believable and in some cases he has vastly improved on characters (cough *cyclops*)other writers (cough*chuck Austen*) seem to have little or no respect for. Beast also now eems more apealing than ever (not that he wasnt in the first place) less a teddy bear and more of a real person with real feelings.

personally I think if you want a good arc, read essential x men 1 and 2 this contains all of chris clairmount and john byrne's work on the title. It also has the begginings of the second team fo x men and the entire phoenix saga beginning to end (well... at least until x factor came along)

Well for me my fav is by far FATAL ATTRACTIONS. Right behind it is Days of Future Past, and then everything Ultimate. Speaking of which i have a really good Manip that I have had in the works for six months that i needed to see the movie to complete. so look for it in the DCG soon.

For me it goes like this:

1. Mutant Massacre: A large portion of the Morlocks are slaughtered by the Marauders, leaving the X-Men as the only ones who can stop their killing spree. TWO of the greatest Wolverine/Sabretooth battles EVER ensue, Angel's wings are bloodily torn apart, and countless members of the X-Men are brutally injured.

2. X-Tinction Agenda: Many X-Men are captured and brought to Genosha to be put on trial for their "crimes" by Cameron Hodge, a former mutant associate who is barely recognizable as human after his dismembered head has been attached to a large machine (Archangel cut off his head with his wings). It is up to the remaining X-Men and X-Factor to storm Genosha and save their friends. Classic moments include a brainwashed Havok fighting Cyclops to a stand-still and Wolverine kissing Jean Grey in what may be his last moments alive.

3. The DARK Phoenix Saga: The Phoenix Saga was alright, but IMO The Dark Phoenix Saga is where it all got interesting. Wolverine fighting his way through hoardes of Hellfire goons was amazing and the final battle against the Shi'Ar on the moon for the life of Jean Grey is one of the best fights in history. Jean's final decision is heart-breaking.

4. Inferno: Demons are unleashed upon the Earth and Madelyne Pryor, the mysterious Sinister-created clone of Jean Grey, ascends to her place as Goblin Queen. For the first time since they were thought dead, the X-Men team up with X-Factor to put a stop to Mr. Sinister, N'astirh and the Goblin Queen.

5. The Phalanx Covenant: I have a soft spot for stories where the heroes are on the run, have no place to go and don't know if they can even trust their friends. The Phalanx Covenant is a prime example of just that. Plus, Banshee and Emma Frost are two of the favourite characters, and Cameron Hodge makes his shocking return.

Well to answer your question newbie-wat? i have consulted the old beat up graphic novel that my brother wisely bartered to get with 2 issues of some comic he did not like. (do not remember but it was Marvel)It runs from issue number 129 through 137 in this particular graphic novel.
It begins with the aftermath of the muir island and proteus and ends on the moon.. cool story arc.

as an aside: This is an old graphic novel so i do not know if it has been republished. the cover price is 6.95. Wow thats a good bargain nowadays. I was just wondering if this has been republished in any form?

MALLRATX2,

My favourite story arc was the entire run of MESSRS. JOHN BYRNE, TERRY AUSTIN, DAVE COCKRUM & CHRIS CLAREMONT that started with GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1 until that particular creative team for THE UNCANNY X-MEN(TM) sundered.

...However, I am also extremely fond of the period wherein MR. NEAL ADAMS drew THE UNCANNY X-MEN(TM), although I cannot recall the Writer's name, especially the adventure that was reprinted as [B]GIANT-SIZE X-MEN(TM) #2.

The GOD LOVES; MAN KILLS Graphic Novel was what BS should have used to storyboard his first film, as it is Utterly Without Flaw, with MR. BRENT ERIC ANDERSON @ his peak.

POST SCRIPTUM: Receive 100 bonus marks & go to THE TOP OF THE CLASS(TM) for giving full props to most under-rated film to date that has been written & directed by my man MR. KEVIN SMITH! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
