Makes certain operators of interactive computer services and Internet service providers liable to persons injured by false or defamatory messages posted on public forum websites. Actual libel and slander I can understand. If you post false information about a company's financial health, for example, under the pretext of being an insider or employee of that company, then I can see real harm or damage coming from that sort of posting. Harm which could potentially affect a lot of people.

But "defamation" is a vague, nebulous concept, subject to a hundred different interpretations. We all know where that would lead. Any and every religious, cultural or other such interest group would seek to use such a law to silence debate on crucial topics of politics, law, or morality if certain posters were seen to push the envelope too far.

Just another example of the chilling times we live in. Watch what you say/type.

Cracks me up whenever any body or organisation in the US starts trying to regulate the web in this way. The ladies and gentlemen of the Phillipines etc. chuckle to themselves, then carry on as before.
