View Full Version : Casting call for Nightwing

Okay, I've been putting a lot of thought into this as Nightwing is my all time favorite DC character (possibly my favorite comic hero period). But I can't come up with an actor who I could see playing the part.
The rest of the cast is not as hard to figure out, but Richard Grayson himself?, that’s another story. Now before I go putting my picks up, I thought I'd see what the level of interest is for this, so lets hear it folks... who do you see in this movie. Cast as many characters in the book as you would like.

I could see Chris O'donell playing Nightwing.
In fact, I already have.

I'm gonna move this to the Batman forum, as that's the umbrella this character falls under.

I second this, I'm a huge nightwing fan and I think o'donnel was a great dick grayson(although I didnt like the way he was kinda bad ass in the movie, o'donnel did a good job, and besides the bad ass exterior, he was very similar to comic Dick)

Jason Marsden, who played Burt Ward in Return to the Batcave could be Nightwing if only he was a bit taller.

You think Burt Ward would get angry if they didnt ask him to play the role? I seem to remember Adam West getting pretty steamed over Batman.

I have to admit I'm not a big fan of Chris for this part. I thought for the script he had he did okay, but I don't see that as the Richard Grayson from the Nightwing comic.
Lets hear who else you might cast from this comic as well;
I.E. who would play;
Barbara Gordon
Det. Redhorn
Nite Wing
Cassidy
Hogan
etc... etc...

I know he's too old for the character now but I've always seen Tom Cruise as the perfect choice for Dick Grayson/Nightwing. He has the look and the devil may care attitude that Dick has shown while being deadly serious about his work.
I'm not as up on the younger, newer actors in movies today so I really can't choose anyone more up-to-date even though I've heard talk of Jake Gyllenhall from Donnie Darko was considered as a replacement for Maguire if he couldn't do the Spider-Man sequel which leads me to believe he must be about the right size to play Nightwing because the character shouldn't be imposing like Batman or Superman. Just lithe and athletic.

While I see your reasoning and it is your prerogative, I respectfully disagree. Nightwing has found his own audience outside the Bat titles as well. He might have been trained by and raised by the man, but, he changed the costume and name to distance himself from the image of "the boy wonder" and to get out from under the "shadow of the bat". Dick Grayson has carved his own niche in Bludhaven and with the Titans. I started this thread in the general topics forum because I am a huge fan of Nightwing and only pick up Bat titles if they cross over into his story. Nightwing is a much more interesting character to me than Batman ever was (My opinion of course). And I no longer associate him as a "Bat title" regardless of others views of him.
I also consider the general forum an area where more people will take notice of this, not just Batfans...
Thanks for hearing me out and for your great work with C2F in any case.

I always thought Elijah Wood would've made a gret Robin...now that he's older, I guess Nightwing is the obvious progression..

I agree that he'd make a better Nightwing than Spider-Man. He's an awesome actor but a little too intense to be Peter Parker. Dick Grayson though.....yeah, I could see it.

Even though he is getting slightly older I always thought Paul Rudd would make an excellent Dick Grayson/Nightwing. He was mentioned to play Superman by Wolfgang Peterson during Batman vs. Superman, but I thought he fit Nightwing much better. The only younger actor that has really impressed me enough to remind me of Dick has been John Hensley from Witchblade. He has the build, the height and the mixture of attitude and lightheartedness to be nightwing.

What do you guys think of Ewan McGregor as Nightwing? He'd have to darken his hair, and he'd need to get into athletic shape, but I think he might pull it off.

They can throw Ashton in this role, but for God's sake, DON"T MAKE HIM BATMAN.

I THINK BARRY WATSON (FROM 7TH HEAVEN & WHAT ABOUT BRIAN?) WOULD BE A GOOD NIGHTWING/DICK GRAYSON. HE'S NOT THE BIGGEST GUY IN THE WORLD AND HE'S GOT THE HAIR.

Eh, Watson isn't bad, but anyone can get the right hair with a hair dresser or even wig.
What about Ian Somerhalder, Boone from Lost and also from Smallville?

Ok here are my two candidates for Nightwing and Robin
Nightwing:
1) Chad Michael Murray From "One Tree Hill and "house of wax"
Robin:
2) Frankie Nunez From "Malcom in the middle

Gregory Smith is the name, I used him as Robin in my Titans series in the DCG. I guess it's pretty believable that Smith would be possible as Nightwing.

Well, according to this interview, Milo Ventimiglia is interested in the role of Nightwing. I think that could be good casting.
However... there's a catch. He wants to skip Robin. I don't see that, unless they just have Robin in flashbacks and do a separate Nightwing series. It should not jump from Batman Begins to Batman & Nightwing. Wasn't Batman Forever (and it's terrible sequel I shall not utter) bad enough?
Never mind the gay over tones of those. Why the hell would Bruce adopt a grown man? Not that there aren't man / boy gay overtones. Certainly we had Wertham complaining about that (among other things) in the 50s and that brought about the terrible Comics Code. That little bit of history disgusts me. Unfortunately we're seeing history repeat itself with video games.
Anyway, I don't mind gay superheros. I like Apollo and Midnighter, who are basically Warren Ellis making a gay Batman and Superman. I even don't mind man / boy love comics. Not my cup of tea, but it's a huge genre in Japan and many American fan girls, and even some boys, are making it a big market in the US.
Yet Batman and Robin are just not gay. I think that's bull----, especially if you look at modern comics. You can have a young Dick Grayson adopted by Bruce Wayne in a way that makes sense and isn't campy or creepy.
Meanwhile, I wouldn't mind skipping Robin and just going right to Nightwing. Though I'd also want to see Dick interacting with current Robin Tim as they are like brothers and that's an important character interaction.
Either a Nightwing movie or TV could be amazing. Then again, I said that about Birds of Prey or Catwoman and Warners managed to totally screw those up.
I wouldn't mind to see a Nightwing movie that is separate of the Batman films. I don't think the Batman Begins Batman needs, or is ready for, a Robin just yet. Like you said, Xenos, I could see it being done without any gay overtones, with Bruce sympathizing for a boy who loses his parents and so on, but I really think it's just too early for that.
However, if a Nightwing movie were made, even potentially taking place in the near future, I could see flashbacks discussing his Robin upbringing without making it too much of an origin story. Really, I don't think that too much back story is even needed for Robin... I don't think anyone in the world is a big enough fan of Robin to insist on a movie of his origin be made. Everyone and their mother knows who Robin is, just a rough backstory about him is all that is needed.

The only reason I would want to see Robin in Nolan's film is so the Joker could brutally murder him. Not that I'm bloodthirsty or anything, but such an act would serve to make the relationship between Bats and Joker intensely personal, which is what their dynamic requires.
Goblin became such a personal foe for Spider-Man after he killed Gwen Stacey. If Joker only threatens Gotham or something, he's just another run-of-the-mill psychopath for Batman to take down. But if he murders Robin, it not only creates the really twisted Joker I want to see (one who would actually kill a kid), but it would help create the relationship between Bats and Joker that is so essential to their dynamic in the comics.

Eh, but then it would have to be Jason who gets killed. Though an adaptation of A Death in the Family as a stand alone film with Jason as Robina nd Dick as Nightwing would work. Though certainly it just won't be anywhere near the Nolan films.
