View Full Version : MTV Spider-Man
Wow, Finally saw the animated series of Spider-Man on MTV and I must say it one of the best, the story and dialogue could be better, but it's the artwork that I truly enjoy. The combination of Computer and Animation makes Spiderman looks awesome overall. I've been waiting for a real good Spiderman Cartoon. I agree, this is has alot of violence and definetly not for kids. I can't wait for next series and hopefully they'll make more of these types of animation like X-men and other Marvel superheros!

Did anyone see who Peter was online with?
The handle was GS122. That's an inside reference for long-time Spidey fans.

Yes! So you remember that this is the very same rope that was used as Spidey's web on the Electric Company TV show.
Ah, good times - good rope.

I think it actualy relates to the most famous death in Spiderman's long history. GS is the dead one, 122 was the comic issue.

Oh... I thought I had gotten it right. I was so proud, too, and now my pride has been diminished.

Actually she was dead by the end of issue 121 but I'm certain that what the show was going for.
Sorry Frosbite.

I believe this show definitely has potential. It seems that for every lame line there is a clever one and for every lame villain there is an interesting plot twist. The CG landscapes are something to look at, yet some character designs seem to center around the same body model (with a few notable exceptions). As many people pointed out, the show has some of the best Spider-Man acrobatics... ever. Yet on the ground, the movements can have a jerky, artificial quality (think "Reboot"). The show has a definite sense of continuity, which, if used properly, is always a plus. On the other hand, some episodes seem complitely out of continuity, referring to the events that didn't happen at that point. I suspect this has something to do with a peculiar numbering of the episodes http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
Ultimately, the good elements outshine the bad elements, giving me hope that when the show's creators will smooth out the wrinkles and bring us a truly great show we can reminiss about on the "I love the 00's" special http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
INDUVIDUAL EPISODE COMMENTS (Warning: SPOILERS)
The Party
I only saw the second part of that episode. Peter's monologue on the sealing was funny. I didn't realize that the cool-looking silver-blue CG guy was supposed to be Electro until I saw the episode summary. Other then that, nothing special. Still, the episode intrigued me enough to stay tune for the next one.
Continuity note: Peter makes a reference to X-men, implying that they are real people in the show's universe.
Sword of Shikata
An interesting attempt to connect the primary and secondary plot. Most of the time, the secondary plot is jsut there to fill in time and give the other characters something to do. In this episode, the secondary plot actually depended on what happened in the primary plot. Rich guy dies, MJ loses shot at acting. Could of been done better, but I give them credit for trying. The capturing-superhero-to-add-to-collection-of-rare-animals has been done to death. Shikita reminded me of Lady Shiva from DCU (minus the whole sword-as-a-powersource thing). Speaking of which, I am dissapointed that we didn't get any background on Shikata whatsover. The least they could of done is explained what was the deal with her sword. Instead, we are left completely in the dark. Oh well. At least we have some material for future fanfiction. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
Continuity Note: The cops call Spider-Man "mutant freak", implying that the prejudice against mutants exists in the cartoon universe. X-Men crossover, anyone?
Keeping Secrets
I am sorry, but what kind of name is "Talon"? What does it have to do with robbing people? "Green Goblin" I can understand. "Doctor Octopus" maybe. But "Talon"? Peter is right: where do the guys in Daily Bugle get their ideas?
Am I the only one who noticed that Harry dated a black girl and NOBODY CARED. The comic books stopped making a big deal out of interracial relationships quite some time ago, but TV and movies tend to be slower to catch up. I know it doesn't mean much to most people, but given my dating history, I am can't help but be a bit partial. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
The chat between Peter and GS122 was interesting. The "spandex" exchange was priceless. ked the fact that Spider-Man actually tried to persuade Talon to change her ways. Normally, in those types of storylines, the superheroes try to turn the bad guys in and worry about their friends later. Once again, I must complain about the lack of backstory. Unless Talon shows up again, I would of liked to know more about her.
Law of the Jungle
I watched the previous incantation of the Spider-Man cartoon. To me, Doc Connors was always an essentially nice guy who just happened to turn into an angry lizard-monster. In this version, Doc Connors is more bitter and sarcastic. Frankly, I liked the old version better. The design of the lizard is a definite improvement, though. Other then that, nothing remarkable.
Tight Squeeze
Ever since the end of Cold War, the media tended to potray Soviet technology as a piece of crap, so it's nice to see an episode where the Soviet tech is not only useful, but quite deadly. On the other hand, the Russian of Pteradax members was simply awful. As a citizen of that once-proud nation, I find the show's mutilation of my birth language disgusting. Indy has officially intrigued me. Don't get me wrong - Mary-Jane is a nice person. I just never liked her very much. I know that MJ and Peter are destined to ultimately end up together, but I hope against hope that Peter and Indy would actually have a chance to have a relationship.
Head Over Heals
WTF? Did I miss somethimg? Just last episode, MJ was trying to figure out the nature of her relationship with Peter. Yet this episode, they seemed to have some kind of romantic relationship. The ending cleared in up somewhat, though I still say someone messed up the continuity.
The "psycho-girl-stalks-superhero" storyline hs been done to death. The MJ/Peter "romance" was painful to watch. Thank God Mary-Jane realized that in the end of the episode. Indy was kind of cold, which I found rather unsettling. If it wasn't for the ending, this would of been the worst episode yet.
When Sparks Fly
He's baaack. You can't keep a cannon villan down for long, and Electro is no exception. I tried to feel sorry for him. I could understand where he was coming from. The loneliness can drive you to go to desperate lengths to end it. I've been there. I've done some things I am not proud of. But ultimately, I realized that what I was doing was wrong and changed my ways. Until Electo realizes that, I can relate to him, but I can't feel sorry for him.
The Peter/Indy exchange and Harry's comment on it was hillarious. I liked the fact tht Harry was finally forced to confront and evaluate his hatred for Spider-Man. I am looking forward to seeing what may come of it.
Note: the sign that Electo drained power from said "Static Shock"
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Good: One word - Indy. I like her gravity-defying polytails, her sarcasm and her down-to-earth brilliance. Peter's humor is yet to approach the comic-book levels, but it's getting there. The CG designs have come along way since the previous cartoon.
The Bad: There are still many utterly lame lines and lame plots. I hope the show eventually gets away from formulistic writing and tries something diffrent. Something unique.

First, I second that.. first I second? Is that right? Anyway, I second that some of the dilaouge is weak at points. This especially is surpising since Bendis, who is known for dialouge, worked on it. Too bad they didn't get him to work on some scripts.
Also, the animation is very good. I love Mainframe. Yet, I ahve seen better. Though this is the best I've seen in the US, there are a few Japanese shows that are a bit better and more cel shaded. Though I'm not sure how 2-d looking they were trying to go with this show. There is a French company that also made a relaly cool short that I loved. I posted about their Molly Star Racer here (http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/Forum1/HTML/001541.html)

Interesting points. First, I liked Reboot and thought the animation was amazing. Though we are like 5-10 years down the road, so things should be even smoother.
As for coninutity. Yeah, MTV seems to be airing them out of order. Yet another reason to hate MTV and kill Carson Daily. (Not that I need more reaons.) Well, at least it's not as bad as Clerks on ABC.

Complaints thuss far:
1# To much damn techno
2# Doogie Howzer isnt cuttin it for me
3# animation needs some work.
so far thats it, the writing good, but the storys need to be put together right damnit! this show should be moved to Cartoon Network, or possibley Spike. (although it does have a MTV feel about it)
I think this show will get better with time. give em a cupple seasons to hash it all out. Unfortunatley GOOD shows on MTV usually have the shelf life of an open can of fruit cocktail.

Personally, I loathed Seasons 1 & 2 of Reboot and loved Seasons 3 & 4. As for the animation quality, perhaps Reboot was a bad example. "Voltron: The Third Dimension" would be a better one.

Oh, come on, techno is cool http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
BTW, am I the only one who is upset that the most recenlty shown episode implied that Indy and Peter may of spelt together? As much as I support their relationship, Peter never struck me as the kind of guy who would take that sort of thing lightly. Or was continuity screwed up again?

The show, imo, just kicks ass. Some continuity (sp?) foul-ups here and there, but oh well. The animation is also great.
And personally, I think Doogie has nailed the voice to Peter.
I'm just waiting for them to top Spidey's line to the Lizard..."Know where I can get some tail." Don't know why, but I just love that line.

So what happened to the MTV Spider-Man? Did it get cancelled or something? Haven't seen it in some time.

From what I understand, they simply ran out of episodes to show. Hopefully, that will change soon.

Apparently they're releasing the entire first season on DVD, which is great news for those of us who don't live and in the States and have yet to see a single episode http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/frown.gif
