View Full Version : Sexually Empowered

So... this board hasn't had any activity for a long time. So I grasped at a straw for us to comment on.
Nobody seemed to have anything to say about Kirsten Dunst's remarks about the growth of her character in the next film. She said her character would be stronger and empowered by herself and her sexuality. I find this refreshing because of how weak Mary Jane often appeared in the first movie. She was cool, but she has room to become more take-charge and self-assured.
Later it says that Mary Jane wont stand for Peter's rejection and will be active in deciding where the relationship goes.
What does everyone make of this? Will Mary secude and take control of our beloved bachelor Peter? Will she stop with Peter and date other guys(all the while really just wanting to make Peter jealous)? Or will she just praddle on and be the strong woman she should be.
We all know Mary Jane needs Peter. So I think a lot of the next movie will have her fighting to gain Peter's affection in one way or another.

Here's my idea: Mary Jane, in an effort to make Peter like her, becomes all slutty and whorish. Peter, being the jealous person that he is, wants to give Mary Jane a ride on the jealousy train as well, so he also goes and has promiscious sex with everyone he can find. But one of these girls catches Peter's eye, and he sees this one as more than a brief f*ck; someone he truly likes. And who is this person? Gwen Stacy.

I can't see that happening at all. Sony isn't going to make their tentpole summer 2004 release a porno. Parents won't take kids to see it if it's sexual. The primary storyline is Doc Ock versus Spider-Man. The Mary Jane and Peter Parker storyline is there, but it is background.

I don't think Frostbite was being serious. Or was he? (Cue dramatic music)

I knew it!
Mary Jane is going for John Jameson in the next movie. She's jerking Peter around and trying to make him jealous. Sure, she'll act like she really likes John but we all know she loves and needs Peter.
Maybe Gwen or Felicia will come around in the next movie and Peter can fight fire with fire.

We should all have these 'problems'! Let's see, in the comics Betty Brant and Liz Allen were regularly hissing at each other, vying for Pete's attentions. Mary Jane and Gwen used to compete for him as well. Felicia actually dated Flash Thompson in an effort to make Pete jealous. And let's not even get into the whole MJ/Felicia rivalry...
Not bad for a geek, eh? http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/tongue.gif http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
I might've asked this before. I can't remember, there've been so many threads. But is Felicia Hardy's first name pronounced like "Fel-lee-sha" or "Fel-iss-ee-ah"?

If you were to say it very very slowly it should sound Fe-li-see-a. But if said normally it just comes out Felisha. So pronounce it Felisha. Felicia.
And most guys do have those problems. Even I've had a few girls who I've had to say no to for one reason or another and it seemed like their first reaction was to try and make me jealous. It would piss me off pretty bad too.
Mary Jane isn't fighting with another woman. She's just going for another man to make Peter jealous. That aint cool. And Peter would never do it to any woman. To pretty much every woman, though, it's empowering, admirable, and basically common-place. They like to make us sweat! Even if it's at the expense of some poor guy who thinks he has something going.
Not all women are like this though.

i cant remember, who wrote the script for spider-man 2, is it the smallville guys, because I think they are geniuses, i love their work
ModeMan

Yes, I believe so. Yeah, if a big part of this script is a concentration on how Peter and MJ should be together but don't get together, the Smallville crew knows exactly the right buttons to push on the audience.

Ugh... Kirsten Dunst pisses me off. She better not ruin the sequel. Her job is to be the damsel in distress, not some empowered feminist.
Anyway, onto the ACTUAL topic at hand. John Jameson? Hmmm... that could actually work out. And I will admit, I don't like the series, but the guys working Smallville have never really made it all mushy and crap. Should make for some interesting plot development. Of course, sucks for Peter considering it's not really his choice to push Mary Jane away, he just has to. So we get to see Mary Jane as the unaware bitch in the next flick... lucky.

Look, the only answer to all of this is in Spider-Man 3 where Felicia Hardy, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacy all have a slumber party and then the pipes in the house explode leaving them all drenched and running in the water.
Cinemax featurette anyone?

And then they'll have to take their shirts off because they're so wet, and then they'll be covered in chocolate, and since the girls like chocolate so much and don't want it to go to waste, they just lick it off each other. Tantalizing.

Hey, maybe its because of the weather but it seems like everyone's turning into odfb's(old dirty fanboys). That's my job! Darth is the good guy, Essex is the peacekeeper(well keeping peace like Wyatt Earp), mallratx2 is the Marvel movie cheerleader, Grimlock is the kid who was always in detention for bullshit reasons, Frostbite is the kid who was in detention to for legitimate reasons, and rare01 is that guy you become friends with so he won't kill you when he snaps!

Let's try and steer this baby somewhat back on topic. In the comics, Peter asked Mary Jane to marry him a couple of times before she finally said yes. Do you think their relationship will pan out that way in the movies?
Frostbite
05-03-2003, 01:52 AM
That would just be mean of her. Could you imagine it? "Mary Jane, will you marry me?" "No."
I get tears just thinking about it.

She is a woman. So, yes, I can imagine it. Women do things that so often seem cruel for reasons only they know. The reasons seem obvious to the woman but the man is completely oblivious and baffled. A mysterious gender is that of Mary Jane's.

MJ was always quite ditzy in the comics and always quite a wimp. It always annoyed me that she wanted him to give up the suit. Why was he with her? He could have had the Black Cat! Kirsten Dunst did a perfect job of annoying me in the movie. I hope that was her great acting. She'll be stronger and empowered by herself and her sexuality? What does that mean?! That she will no longer be a scream queen? Thank you!
I really hope Peter moves on to someone else. Gwen would have been wonderful, but I think they've cut that storyline out (sacriledge). But Betty Brant will be in 2, so maybe something will happen there. She's a lot smarter than MJ and more mature. Maybe he'll go for an even more mature woman - Felicia Hardy. Brooke Adams who will be playing Felicia is over 50. An odd twist? I guess there'll be no Black Cat. Pity.
Maybe MJ will try to make Peter jealous by flirting with Spider-Man.

My bad. Just read that it's a different Brooke Adams playing Felicia. Maybe there's hope for the Black Cat after all.
