View Full Version : Anyone here use DVD capture technology?
To capture screenshots from DVDs for your base images that is. If so, what do you use? Is there any other way to capture scenes on a DVD other than capture programs, as pressing Print Screen obviously doesn't work. It would be more effective and efficient than searching for pictures on the net when you've just got them on your DVD already.
Any ideas?

do you use MAC or PC? I use PC, and I can use PowerDVD to do a screen capture.
Just pause the movie where you want to do a screen cap. Next you press "C" to take a screen cap (there is also a little camera icon). Then open your favorite image editor and paste it into your new file. I just tested it out with my new DVD Narc (great movie by the way) and it worked with no problems.
Again I'm using a PC and the software is PowerDVD.

guess i could provide you with this stuff as well.
here is the site for powerdvd http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=28
it's about $40 from them, they also have a trila version you can download. I'm not sure if it will do the screen capture, I use the full version.
You can also find it postedon various file sharing applications.
Can't wait to see what your going to do with it. Your latest work has inspired me to do a "Dark Knight Returns" image. I can't wait to beat the crap out of Superman for the image.
Hope this stuff helps, if you have more questions or need some help let me know.

I have also used PowerDVD... I got it free with my DVD Rom on the software disc... also included were Nero and the drivers.
Works like a charm.

Most paint progs have their own capture. Psp's lets you capture windows, active areas, or using a rectangle.
file>import>screen capture

Hey, I've got a PC, and I've also got Power DVD too! I must try what you suggested - Thanks! The traditional print screen method doesn't work obviously, as everything moves and when you save, it just comes out black. Will let you know how it turns out!

Dperceful,
Ok I tried using Power DVD, but it didn't seem to do anything when I pressed "C". No camera icon showed up either. Is this method actually part of Power DVD on its own, or do you need other additional software to carry out this function? Do you use PowerDVD 5? I think I have version 4.
Swingerbone, what is Nero? And do you need special drivers to take a picture?
Juvenilemike, I have paintshop pro but I tried the method you suggested, but it still seemed to result in the black screen thing I was describing earlier like doing an ordinary print screen. How exactly does this work?
All help appreciated. Thanks.

I really can't see any camera icon on the bottom of the menu. Which menu? And nothing happens if I press C and then paste into Psp. Do you have PowerDVD 5 or 4? http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/confused.gif

not sure which version i use, i'm not at home right now, when i get home i'll take a look.
as far as which menu is concerned. when you put your dvd in and it launches PowerDVD there is a menu it launches that gives you access to dvd like options such as scan, pause, next, previous, etc.
i think we might be looking at a version difference, when i get home i'll post my findings.
I'm also pasting into photoshop, but that shouldn't make a difference.
I'll let you know what I find out.

PowerDVD - I have the capture camera icon, but I would search in the help to find out what to do with the version you have.
Nero is a CD Burning app, widely believed to be one of the best out there. Not really for use with what you are attempting, but a good app for making mix cds or maybe archiving your entire work of manips... anything that would take up a CD... or you can use Re-writables and just continue to add to it.
When I get my monitor working on my comp I'll check out my Power DVD version... I'm on a laptop for now.
OK, I checked back at that link you posted. It seems that Power DVD version 5 hasn't come out yet (unless I'm mistaken).
I also located a camera icon on the right hand side of the play controls (it was hidden before) next to the "Karaoke" button. However, it just says "Next Angle (A)" when you move the mouse over it. Nothing happens in the way of any screen captures however, and pressing "C" still seems to have no effect! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/frown.gif http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/confused.gif
Oh, it also says "Dell" right in the middle above the play button. I don't suppose it's a different version to a regular Power DVD?

Might be a stupid question, but how about capturing pics from divX files already on my hard drive?

sounds like you might have a different version. I'm using PowerDVD XP. Check your email I sent you some screen caps of the app and it's capture ability. The version you have might be a "limited" version. If there is something particular your looking to have captured let me know I might have the movie and can cap it for you.

not without a video capture program with a still image export/capture feature. you could try media cleaner, after effects, etc. you can do a search on google for shareware or freeware that will do this for you. i went thru the options on the divx player and didn't see a capture method. sorry.

Hey, thanks for sending the emails to me. My version definitely looks different to yours, and there isn't that capture button at all (or even that temple looking background). I have Windows XP, but I don't seem to have PowerDVD XP. However, the version I have doesn't seem to be a limited version either. There's a site I found here which seems to have downloads of the full PowerDVD XP version. Would it be the 3rd one down on the list that I would be looking to download?

If not, i'll try kazaa - only thing is that kazaa is on my other computer which I'm trying to fix, although I might have to download it again!

that's not a download link, it sends you out to amazon for purchase.
i would go the kazaa route, kazaa is a small download, plus powerdvd is a small download around 10MB. not that i condone illegal file sharing or anything like that.
Hey, I've downloaded Kazaa again and PowerDVD XP. It works now... perfectly! It was definitely a difference in the versions we were using. Thanks for all the help!

Hey, I don't suppose you have Jar Jar Binks's underwater homeworld from Phantom Menace on DVD do you? It's really a shot of the underwater city etc, not Jar Jar, his family, or the ship that I want (although if it just had the ship in the picture and was very small, I could probably get rid of it).
Well, even if you don't, thanks anyway. Anyone else have Phantom Menace on DVD?
PS, you wouldn't happen to have either Shanghai Noon or Back To The Future 3 on DVD would you?

i refuse to own phantom menace on dvd, terrible movie, imo. the only reason i picked up clone wars is because toys r us was selling it for $9 the day of the release. sorry i couldn't help you out. hopefully lucas will realize he has lost his touch with story telling and just hand over the reins to someone like peter jackson. again, this is just my opinion, nobody get upset.
hope it all works out for you welshcat.
