hmm, I wasn't aware that German wasn't just a bunch of gibberish. I always figured they just assumed they knew what each other talking about http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif.
Actually I'm just refering to anything that people can't glance at and tell it's a No Topic. I often have to direct off-topicers to the current No Topic and it will be rather tough if they don't know where the No Topic is.

German is certainly not gibberish.
English came from German.
Many German Words are the same in English - or at least very similar.
Hand, Finger, Haus, Maus, etc.

Hundert Sechzehn Kein Thema

Well most languages are evolutions and mergings of others. English takes most of its words from French (I believe). There was a great documentary on about it a while ago, how we took French words for things and made them specific. For example begin and commence. You could say when are you going to commence your Xmas manip? But it'd be kind of weird.

When I was a sophmore in high school I took half a year of German. It would have been a whole year, but the teacher and I had a difference of opinion. She felt that I should turn in my work, but I objected to doing that on moral grounds.
No big loss though, and it was probably better that I left. I'm not very good with languages and wasn't really learning anything. Also there were emotional issues to consider. It was putting me under a lot of stress resisting the urge to beat the crap out of the guy in the seat next to mine. He had been speaking German since he was a kid so really he was just in there to get an easy A and lord his knowledge over every one else.
Also the teacher didn't like me very much, mainly because I never responded when she called on me. It was her fault though, for some reason she thought it would help the learning process to assign us all German names and force us to use them in class. The problem with that is when you spend your entire life responding to one name it's a little hard to start responding to a whole new one. Especially when that name is only used by one teacher, for 90 minutes, every other day. Although to be honest about halfway through the semester I had pretty much gotten used to the name, but I would still ignore her when she called on me. Just to piss her off. Finally she failed me and threw me out of class.
Just thought I'd share.

English is a Germanic language... I have a chart somewhere thay shows the progression onf Archaic German into various languages like Modern German, Dutch, and English.
French has more in common with Italian and Spanish which are all considered the 'Romance' languages.
I think most language proably stems from Latin anyway... so that is how we get the Latin->French but Most everyday speech is very Germanic. Most people use Begin rather than commence... and German for commence is beginnen! Start would be anfangen.
Maybe more "proper" speech is Roamntic, but everyday colloquial language, I believe, tends toward the Germanic.

I have that poster. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/supercool.gif There is a goddess...Angelina be thy name. *bows and starts chanting "I'm not worthy!" *
Okay, over the past few days, my DVD obsession has grown to leviathan proportions. I've purchased Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (the new 2-disc SE), From Dusk Till Dawn, and Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (I refuse to call it "The Movie"). My next targets: Fight Club, Trigun vol. 6, the James Bond Collection, and Gangs of New York.
*starts humming "The Hands That Built America" *

Jolie does look really nice in the new Tomb Raider movie. Anyone noticed her boobs are more "normal" looking? I guess the higher budget allowed for better boob effects. Last time it just looked like they were two coconuts glued on top.
It's kinda like Storm's hair thing.

Speaking of Jolie's boobies, there is a "Got Milk" ad of her as Tomb Raider in a bikini. She looks pretty good but there's one thing about Angelina that doesn't do it for me: She has no ass. I don't need a girl with a ghetto booty but I do like like them to at least have a butt like Rebecca Romijn Stamos. Of course I still wouldn't turn Angelina away because her non-bootyness, that would be insane.

Yeah the english german thing I knew. I realise now I was being a bit of a dumbass. What I really meant (he says trying to save face) is that once established as languages French and English intermixed words a lot more than any other language. This was because of geographic and political ties between the two. That is not to say that the same was not true with Germany, after all our Queen is German, but the common people used french.

OK, so the coolest thing that happened to me so far this summer? I've been emailed by both Geoff Johns (Teen Titans) and Frank Tieri (Weapon X). How sweet is that?!?!? Both were because of message boards I moderate. They both seem like good guys. Anyways, the point of this little story, besides braggin rights, is that my latest board is going public tommorow so I thought y'all might wanna check it out. The board is part of http://www.comicboards.com and I moderate the Superboy and Legion board and the new Weapon X board as Spikeor. So come by and check us out.
Thanks Zac.
