hey guys, i thought i'd get your opinion on art-for-pay. a friend of mine asked me to photomanip and as well as digitally color some hand drawn artwork for a presentation he is making at San Diego Comiccon this week (which is why i haven't been manipping for here much in the last couple of weeks). He wants to pay for the art even though I told him it wasn't necessary. He said he couldn't pay profession rates but that I should just name my price. What is a fair price anyways? Has anyone ever done commissioned work? I probably put in close to 20 hours of work on the project...

thanks,
kevdawg

if you have to charge.. i reckon somewhere between 5-10 dollars per hour is fair..

well if he won't pay professional rates it kinda limits your asking price. i charge 75/hour for web and logo work.

what is his idea of professional pay?

if his idea is 75/hour lowball him to 25.

i would take no less than 15.

it really boils down to what is your time worth? in my opinion it's worth alot, you do excellent work, out of all the manippers here there are a handful that are near or at your level of work.

you do production quality work, i would not settle for pay that is anything less. since it's a friend, okay you get a price cut, but i wouldn't be drastic.

if he's not paying professional rates, and he's ur buddy... i'd charge like $100 or so. For coloring, it's a lot cheaper... usually $20 a page is beginner's pay.

$75 a page. That's the going rate for a page, flats pre-laid. Colorist are not paid by the hour, but rather the page. Point being if you take twenty hours to color a page, it's not Marvel or DC's problem.

To be nice I'd say $40 a page for high detail and complex backgrounds. $25 for just pin ups with little else to them.
