Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com), a leading comic book news and resource Web site, is proud to announce details of "Comic Book Idol," created by J. Torres, writer of the "Open Your Mouth" column at CBR, as well as books for Oni Press, Marvel Comics, and DC’s forthcoming “Teen Titans Go.”

"Comic Book Idol" is an amateur art competition hosted by CBR. It's a five-week, five-round contest in which contestants will be asked to complete an art assignment each week by a deadline. Their art will be posted in a CBR forum designed especially for judges to post comments on and critique said art, as well as for CBR readers to view and vote on their favorites. CBR fans select which contestants move on in subsequent rounds, and two artists will be eliminated from the competition in each round until we have the one and only "Comic Book Idol," who'll receive some amazing prizes for the hard work accomplished during the competition.

The regular panel of judges consists of Jamie S. Rich (Oni Press Editor-in-Chief), Ron Marz (CrossGen Senior Writer and Code 6 Editor), and Joe Quesada (Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief).

There will also be five comic creator guest judges to be announced later.

The host for "Comic Book Idol" will be J. Torres, and details about the competition as well as weekly introductions, instructions and announcements of who moves on and who's eliminated will be found in his CBR column "Open Your Mouth."

To enter, potential contestants must have samples of their work on a Web site or online portfolio. Contestants must have the ability to scan in their artwork and post it online to participate, and should be prepared to draw everything from a character sketch to actual comic pages. Contestants
will be given approximately five days to complete each art assignment.

The contest begins with an open call for submissions kicking off August 7th. Those wishing to be considered for the five-round competition must post links to their work in the designated CBR "Comic Book Idol" forum. A panel of judges consisting of CBR staff members will visit all the links posted and choose ten to face Rich, Marz, Quesada and CBR readers. The first official round of competition starts August 14th and the event continues through till September 18th when the winner is officially announced.

The winner of "Comic Book Idol" will be given three amazing opportunities within the industry. They are:

1. A short story assignment written by Ron Marz and art directed by Bart Sears to be published as a back-up story in CrossGen’s “The Path.”

2. The opportunity to produce a comic strip for the Oni Press Web site "Sunday Comics" (http://www.onipress.com/sundaycomics/) feature, which in the past has had contributions from Brian Michael Bendis, Judd Winick, Paul Dini and
others.

3. Marvel EIC Joe Quesada personally handing your art samples to the Epic submissions editors for review.

Watch the "Open Your Mouth" column for details, deadlines, and other announcements regarding "Comic Book Idol."

lol! Mike, that is EXACTLY what I thought!

This looks really cool and I think it'll be fun to watch, even for those of us that can't draw though. Very exciting!

So then is this open to ONLY pencil drawings, or will computer-rendered art work as well? I'm not just talking about drawing with Wacom or something, but you can use Poser, and apply some Photoshop filters as well, right?

Wow--that's pretty cool.

Any idea on when there will be more details available?

If the open call goes out Aug. 7th, but the first round begins Aug. 14th, does that mean all of the submissions, qualifying, and announcements happen in a 7 day span?

I am looking forward to this, the G.I. Joe campaign shook all the good talent out of the trees and into our backyard-this should really get the creative juices flowing!
