View Full Version : Dench as M vs. Continuity - have they cracked it this way?

I have been thinking about this in detail, and I think I have uncovered a few things in relation to the continuity. One point that comes across in some articles and interview are hints that the "Dench as M" factor and it's impact on continuity in the mechanics of a prequel will be addressed.

I think they are going to go all GoldenEye on us here. Remember the pre-title sequence of this was set, starring Brosnan, before Dalton's tenure as Bond ? One "11 years later" caption after the opening titles and off we went with barely an eyebrow batted or a "huh?" from the audience.

I think they are going to do something similar, but spread out over the film. Yes, we will see, oh... hang on.... POSSIBLE SPOILER...

...where was I ? Yes, we will see 007 (as Craig) gaining his 00 status. Yes, we will see him make some mistakes and go through some transformation that makes him into Bond etc. However I think they may tenuously set all that in the past (in a woolly and maybe undetermined fashion) and that Dench as M will not appear until later in the film.

What do you reckon ?

Also, bear in mind....MORE SMALL SPOILERS ABOUT BOND 22...

.....bear in mind that apparently Bond 22 follows straight on from this Casino Royale with some important plot points carried forward to the next movie, so if viewed as two films being one story, there is plenty of time for an approach like this.

I'm not sure there is much of a time lapse between the teaser sequence and the main story. Because... SMALL SPOILER ALERT...

According to the synopsis from Latino Review, M makes a comment to her aide Villiers about being frustrated with "new agents" or words to that effect.

I hadn't heard that about Bond 22. Is that the intent, to make the series an ongoing story like the Harry Potters?

I think they are at least going to try and capture the essence of, say, the Blofield trilogy at the heart of the books, where the stories clearly followed and had a loose relation.

Who knows, as P&W take aspects from Bond mythology heavily, maybe we will meet Dr. Shatterhand and his garden of death in an upcoming Daniel Craig outing.

I think "restart" means "restart." The past 20 movies are wiped clean, including the fact that M was previously Dench. (Which is why they could have restarted with Brosnan grumble grumble.)

So is Dench out?

Makes sence , . . .

No, Dench is in. But she doesn't have a "past history" with 007.

I haven't read the novel in ages . . .

But isn't it a man 'M' in the book?

Of course, M is a man, Felix is white, and the enemy is Communist Russia. Times change. ;)

Just so long as we don't see Casino Royale Meets The Crying Game. What a spoiler that would make.

Brokeback Bond, Uncle?

Well I prefer The Crying Game over Brokeback Mountain (Ducks head)

In regards to the topic, When this movie come out, I going to put all continuities aside and treat as if it was a "what if" case. Probably, I could give it a fair critique or praise. After all NSNA,(yes the once considered "the bastard of the bond film family reunion") was basically a "what if 00 section ceased to exist..etc. "
