Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village") will play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi is directing the movie, which started filming this month.
Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.
Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle that includes Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.
Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco are reprising their roles. Thomas Haden Church plays Sandman and Topher Grace a yet-to-be-named villain.
The movie is being produced by Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad. The story is by Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi, with a screenplay by Alvin Sargent.
Howard stars in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming Lady in the Water as well as Kenneth Branagh's As You Like It. Howard also stars in Lars von Trier's Manderlay, which opens January 27.
Wow....I love Bryce, but I'm not sure if I can get into the idea of her as Gwen Stacy. She certainly has the "innocence", but I don't know if she looks the part.
Wow....I love Bryce, but I'm not sure if I can get into the idea of her as Gwen Stacy. I can't get into the idea of them casting anyone as Gwen Stacy. I mean, the chance to do the Gwen Stacy storyline has come and gone with the first movie, so now it seems kind of pointless to give the name to some random girl whose storyline has nothing to do with the Gwen Stacy in the comics. It's a bit like turning Eddie Brock into the Sandman.

I guess they're going the same route as in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, but I agree, Gwen shouldn't be used. If they wanted to add another female and create conflict, they should've just used Betty Brant - but then they didn't exactly cast someone that would work well with Tobey Maguire. She looks taller and older than him. But who knows, adding Gwen could end up being good....

I agree with this. Most of Gwen's "classic" story was already given to MJ; the high school girl he wanted but couldn't have; the kidnapping by Green Goblin, the "choose the bus or the girl" scene. What's the point?

agreed. They should have had her in the first movie. maybe even the second movie. but now? Peter and MJ are together, she knows his secret and he's got what he's always wanted. Adding her now does nothing except please the fanboys who have been whining about not having Gwen in the movies.

Doesn't 3/4 of New York know his secret by now?
Doesn't 3/4 of New York know his secret by now?
Yes, but they are not telling, because they are all good people. ;)

Well, they may have seen his face, but how are they to know who it is? They just know spider-man is some kid with a face they probably can't remember too well by now.

The casting of Gwen and Capt. may be the last go round for Sam.... I don't think he wants to come back and do SM4, if there is a SM4.

Um...actually Raimi is on record as saying that he would do up to SM6 if Sony will let him. So I don't think that's a problem.

He also said he'd never do Venom.

Um...actually Raimi is on record as saying that he would do up to SM6 if Sony will let him. So I don't think that's a problem.
Raimi said he would like to do six, if he still have the passion and if Sony still wants him. He also said, if there is still something to tell, about Peter's journey; something left for Peter to learn. However the point I was making dealt with his statement, "If I still have the passion".
Sam is on record to have said, that he does not care to much of the character Venom.... yet, apparently Venom is in this film. WHY? IMO, because Avi Arad(Marvel) producer and Amy Pascal(Sony) wants their cash cow, Venom... totally against the wishes of Sam Raimi; who again, is on record as saying, not only he like the more classic villains, but prefer to bring them to life on the big screen as oppose to the "newer villains".
With that said, in the EW interview with Dallas Howard, she stated that they(the writers for SM3) had just produced a script involving Gwen, and that she was a LAST MINUTE CAST, for the film just days before shooting began in November. Sam said in Spring05(late May) after Topher was announced to have joined the cast of SM3, that the script was complete. Well..... based on Dallas' statements, Gwen Stacy obviously was not in the original script, and Gwen & Capt. Stacy was added recently, at that time.... meaning, Avi and Amy must have dictated that Gwen, Capt, Eddie, and Venom be included in this film, SM3.
Sam said earlier last year, that he was going to finish telling the Goblin story and tie up loose ends between Peter & Harry; and, that he did consider some parts of Cameron's original script involving the villains Sandman and Electro. Which is were the first speculation of Topher being Electro came from. When Sam commented the day he announce Topher's casting, "Spidey will face double the trouble" Goto Sony/Spiderman website news section. Topher was most probable originally cast to play Maxwell Dillon/Electro.... which made sense with Topher's physique.
So, IMO, Sam has had little to say about the direction of this film, compared to the first two films. Which I believe, Sam may be, if not already, growing weary about future projects surrounding the Spiderman series. He may be being pushed out, for a new director and a new cast, to finish the remaining films.
