The Extended version of The Two Towers is my favorite, because it greatly improved upon the theatrical cut. Fellowship is my favorite as a film on its own, but the Extended cut just added some lovely moments to an already great film. Ditto for ROTK - the theatrical cut was a masterpiece, and the Extended edition is a longer masterpiece. The Two Towers, on the other hand, was greatly improved upon in the Extended cut.

Frankly, I can't watch the theatrical cuts anymore. My brother thinks I'm nuts. He likes to watch the theatrical ones when he doesn't want to sit with a movie for 3+ hours. Frankly, to me, watching them is like watching a film edited for television. It's annoying because you see the cuts.
FOTR is my favorite extended simply because it was the most noticeably cut of the three.

I agree with alaris. While I definitely enjoyed the theatrical version of The Two Towers, the extended version greatly improved upon everything.

I wasn't as knocked out with the ROTK EE. I mean, an avalanche of skulls, Gimli fart jokes, Saruman-Kabob, giving MOS the slice-and-dice... eh.
I did like the extended scenes in Mordor. I would have preferred more of this. As indeed, more time to develop the Faramir/Eowyn relationship.
Two Towers works either way. Though some parts make more sense in the EE. Actually, I take it back, the EE is better. :smirks:
Fellowship is my choice. It just feels like a more complete movie, where they tried to include as much of the book as possible-- instead of just cramming in more fight scenes.

I voted for FOTR, but I actually can't decide btwn it and TT. I liked both of them in different ways, but TT was just SO GOOD it gave me goose bumps at several places, like when the Ents went to war.
As for EE, hands down FOTR wins it for me. I could never go back to watching the theatrical again (although I did like the title scene better in theatrical with the green forest than in EE when it showed Bilbo writing in the book).
I thought EE ROTK was great, didn't make it much more spectacular, but added to it nicely. The only thing I liked better in the theatrical was that Aragorn's coming w/ the army of the dead wasn't spoiled ahead of time, b/c we didn't know how the dead answered him when he cried "What say ye!"
Now, this will be surprising, but I rather disliked the EE for TT. I enjoyed seeing those cut scenes, but somehow I don't think adding them made the film better. I think the theatrical had better flow and was done perfectly. For one thing, I thought that cutting straight to the white flower at the grave site after Theoden asks "where's my son" was more effective than cutting to the funeral scene. I can't explain it, but for me the funeral scene diminished the effect of Theoden's grief - I just thought it was much better cutting straight to the grave scene. The funeral was almost an interupption in the progression of Theoden's feelings.
But, the one big thing I disliked about the TT EE was the end, where Faramir warns Sam and Frodo about where Gollum is taking them. It completely ruined the final scene, when Gollum is talking to himself. In the theatrical, my spine was crawling (even though I'd already read the books) as Gollum fought with himself over killing the hobbits, and then finally whispered "We'll let HER do it". There was an element of sinister mystery in how the film ended off like that, but adding in the scene w/ Faramir completely spoiled that (and what was coming in ROTK with Shelob) and completely diminished the effect of that scene.
Whew! There ya go....my two cents.

My choice is the FOTR. The EE of TTT added nicely to some things, like Faramir's character and the Ents, but I would also have left out Théodred's funeral scene and Faramir's warning to the hobbits. And, the EE of ROTK was a bit of a disappointment for me. The end of Saruman was a welcome addition (although I didn't like the idea of Legolas shooting Gríma - it would have been better to have a Rohirric archer in the king's company to do it, or Saruman with his last strength could have pulled him with him when he fell), as was the little of the Houses of the Healing that we saw (there could have been more about Faramir and Éowyn finding each other though). But, the skull avalanche was just cheesy, and a couple of other additions were unnecessary as well.
In general, the FOTR was the most balanced of the three parts; in the later two, Jackson and company got a bit too carried away with making the situation even more desperate than it was in the books. As a critic said about his King Kong, which goes for the LOTR movies as well, someone should have told him to kill his darlings - less would actually have been more.

So... you mean you haven't read the books?

I have read the books, but I like to judge the films as someone watching it who hasn't read the books. Just because I know what's coming, I wouldn't like it to be made obvious in the movie ahead of time.

Fellowship was amazing. Plus it was the only movie in the trilogy I really even liked. Way too much Jar Jar Gimli in the later 2.

Just if I could throw in my 2 cents or less . . .
I absolutley love The fellowship E.E..It take a great film & make it even better and more loved by Tolken maniacs  . . .
I thought the Two towers E.E. was a complete mess. I mean there are some good things in it( in and of themselves/ Strider's age etc.) but he just messed with too much of the harmony & pace of the film , and it doesn't flow nearly as good. I cetainly prefer the theater cut.
I'm Still out to lunch as far as R.O.T.K. E.E. goes. It has some great extentions, But takes the mystery out of the dead men in the mountain climax(forgive me how that sounds!)I do really like the Frodo & Sam Mordor stuff however.

But didn't you think that the ROTK theatrical cut was pretty darn near perfect as well? Except for omitting the Housing of Healing, I thought it was brilliant. And for my taste, putting the less than 5 minutes of the Houses of Healing back in wasn't quite enough in the EE.

Yes, there just wasn't enough time. If it had been a mini-series, they could have spent a certain amount of time just on the Houses of Healing. But in a film, it just would have slowed the pacing down to a crawl.

That's why we have those wonderful books. We can read them over and over again and imagine the scenes in our heads!

Return of the king for me. The inclusion of Sarumans demise was over-due and the mouth of Sauron scene was a superb touch.

RotK for me also cuz that scene when the riders come up on the hill and see the besieged Minas Tirith......then they prepare......and then the charge.....ahhh.....the music....the timing....the knowing of whats before them....its the most fantastic sequence I've ever seen. From there to the part where the battle is over is pretty good :smirk:
