View Full Version : DCG Get Together Madness...

This really doesn't belong in a No Topic, but a lot of us seemed to think it's a pretty nifty idea.
So...
Anyone want to plan a DCG get together, either for folks in their area or for out-of-area people?
For instance:
In my area (the San Francisco Bay Area), there are a lot of Science Fiction conventions. In February, DunDraCon takes place. It's a President's Day event, and is focused mostly on gaming. I frequent this one because I'm a freelancer in the industry, and use this as a chance to make new contacts with game companies and artists. This is a GOOD place for comic and graphic-novel focused artists, or game focused artists, to make an in. It's smaller than GenCon by FAR, but because of that, you're more likely to get noticed. I see the same four artists there every year, and I know for a fact the organizers want new blood in that place.
In May, over Memorial Day, Baycon takes place. It's a four day science fiction convention, replete with its own artists alley, fiction and art workshops, and a more than halfway decent Masquerade for costumers (I know at least one other DCG'er that does costumes besides myself).
Over Labor Day, there is Silicon, which I haven't been to in quite some time, but which also has workshops, artists, and Masquerade.
This coming Easter holiday, or thereabouts, there will be NorWesCon, in Seattle. I am planning on attending that, and being The Joker as part of the Gotham villains. As I mentioned in another thread, we don't know if our Ivy will be there, and there's an open invitation to our resident Satanic Rabbit if she's interested in joining us. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
I suggest conventions for a very simple reason: They usually take place in hotels, they are large, neutral areas that come complete with food, entertainment, places to sleep, and people to interact with. And, if you find you don't like your fellow DCG'ers, you can always find something else to do.
Also, I frequently hold "orphans" Thanksgiving and Christmas/Yule, New Years holiday gatherings. If people feel like trekking to my neck of the woods, give me enough warning, and I'll probably be able to open my home to you. Yes, I really am that nice a guy. 's'truth.
Anyway...
Folks want to work up some sort of get-together dealie-or-other?

I was hoping to meet Ashley and Stat, since they are down in FL and only some hours away.... but that doesn't look like it will happen. I've met Robbo, though, and was going to meet Kev at the same con, in 2002, but didn't get around to it.

hey jemstone, i'd probably be down for a meet n'greet some time. i'm not much into fantasy/gaming but other options that the san francisco bay area also has:
Wondercon (probably in SF from now on)
APEcon (Alternative Press Expo in SF)
Paramount's Great America
6 Flags Marine World
Dave & Busters (are you close to the one in Milpitas?)
not to mention historical movie sights like:
the faux freeway from the Matrix Reloaded
stuff that Hulk smashed in SF and the labs that he worked at
and more!
i'm probably gonna make San Diego Con a pretty annual thing. i might check out the new wizard world LA and at some point i'd like to go to Wizard Chicago...

I hardly ever attend comic conventions... I'm used to working Guest Services/Hospitality/Security at science fiction conventions, and the sheer lack of Guest security at Wonder Con has made my skin crawl every time I think about it... Like the time the guys guarding the Playboy Playmates decided they wanted to go to lunch, and left the girls alone behind their booth, without any sort of coordination, management for the lines, or anything for over two hours. I found someone in charge of the floor and read him the riot act for not having gophers to get them food and water, or at least having standby security folks. Sure, the odds of anything untoward actually happening were LOW, but the fact that these people were off their post for TWO HOURS and there was no one to back them up... Gah.
SD Comic Con is a long held dream of mine... sadly, I don't ever have the time or the money to go to it... maybe next year...
As to the D&B in Milpitas...
Heh. Yeah. I live five minutes from the place.
Fun fact of the day. The Skynet building that Arnie blows up in T2 is about ten minutes away from my house. During the filming, it was visible from Highway 880, which passes right by my residence. Also, several of the "back hallway" shots at the Mall in that movie were done at one of our local malls, Newpark in Newark/Fremont.
Oh, and parts of Logan's run (interior shots) were done at Eastridge Mall in San Jose. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

In all seriousness, and not just because I want to bump my phat thread, yo...
I'm starting the plans for my Halloween Weekend NOW...
I have three places for people to crash in my house - two couch beds (not sofabeds, which fold out into beds, but couches that are also beds) which will sleep one person with lots of room, two with adequate room, and three if they're really friendly, and a futon in the office.
I have some local folks who are interested in crashing at my place, but live close enough that they could drive home if necessary. I give preferential treatment to people based on the distance they have to drive.
Anyone up for Halloweenie Goodness? Fun, Food, and Frivolity! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

It's wierd how many people actually know what and where Valdosta is. I love this city with all my heart. And, of course, as soon as I leave they get a G-R-E-A-T comic book shop. I was actually lucky enough to discover comics while in GA. Through this, I have met some truly wonderful friends. This goes out to all my PEOPLES in that thing we used to call the UWA. If it wasn't for you you guys I don't think I would be in Cali. trying to live out my dream as an artist. THANKS.
On a side note, Buckhead huh? The world is a VERY small place after all.

Do what I do in times like this. Find something loud, obnoxious, and full of driving noise (today, my musical drug of choice is The Ramones) and play it until your head pops, or the people around you begin to flee like small animals in the face of an Elephant.

BSG is basically 24 episodes (with a couple of two and three hour specials), one season... And it's pretty much The Book Of Mormon in space. That being said, it's not bad entertainment, and uses the same SFX guy that did Star Wars. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
