I thought this article was pretty interesting.... Anyone else have any useful links for people who want to give constructive critism?

Great link, Strangefish!
Unfortunately, I don't have a similar link to offer, but I do have a 3 word summary of what I think a UIR should be: "Honest but Kind".
Sometimes, when offering a critique, we need to say things that people might take negatively. At these times, honesty is as important as kindness when communicating. There's never a cause to be cruel or insulting.
On the other hand, try not to take criticism too personally as an artist. Accept the critique, use the information that you agree with, and discard the rest. The critique is of the work, not the artist.
Thanks again, Strangefish!

It seems like only 2 or 3 people give critiques most of the time.

Yeah, I suck at doing Uir's consistently. But that's just because when I do them, I tend to go all out. Well, actually that's not true. If it's someone that I think will take the advice on board then I'm happy to give it out, but I get frustrated by the many folks that just submit like 30 pictures all at the same time. Why not submit one and then use what they've learnt from the UIR to make the others better? And it's a little hard to UIR the 10 millionth picture of a black lady with white hair and blurred white eyes.
But still, I do it everynow and again, because it stings when you work hard and no one mentions your pict.

I posted a good deal of generalized UIR advice, addressing that, among other things, JM!
It's in the UIR I started for today: http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/Forum7/HTML/002856.html
Can anyone else think of anything that needs added?

Oooh, great article.
Can't really think of anything to add in terms of advice for reviewers.
There is one bit of advice for artists, but I think that goes in the other thread.
As far as UIRing goes, I try to do it at least semi-regularly, when I have sufficient time and/or there's a really good update. (A fairly rare conjunction, admittedly.) I'm no veteran, obviously, but I figure I get good enough press that I have a duty to put my two cents in when I can.
Oh, and I've got agree that UIRing the same cut-n-pastes and 3 minute recolours gets wearying quite fast.
Hey, I have a few unhelpful words of advice I'd like to offer onto to the rest of the DCG:
Cut and paste any random UIR from the previous month and simply change the names of the artists and titles of the pictures. No-one will know the difference.
So, for example, today's UIR might go like this:
Captain America by Squedge - good casting, but I'd like to see proper full rendering of Gambit rather than just a straight recolouring of the eyes in red.
Wasp by Kev Incal - looks cool, but that white streak in her hair looks rather painty. And it's spelled Rogue, not Rouge!
Of course, not all the comments might fit as well as those ones above, so you might need a few changes here and there. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Dangit. I KNEW that I should've did the full figure. But the headshot was just SOOOOOOOOOOO tempting...

okay i'll throw in my opinion.
first off about uir's. it would be great if people participated, therefore you would get some diverse insight into your image. but what you get is what you get, and just kinda deal with it. i would love 7 or 8 reviews on my work....but i know i might only get one, oh well, it happens, so move on. try to understand, everyone has a outside life and their schedule might not permit a uir.
as far as how to handle a uir. criticism is meant to be helpful. none of us are trying to intentionally trying to disrespect your work. if you don't like what someone has to say, that is your right....they also have the right to tell you where you could improve.
i appreciate the work that everyone does and try and be equal on all fronts. but when an artist says in their notes, "i did this in 10 minutes," or "this is a sketch i did while in class," or whatever. You have just opened yourself up to a world of hurt. why submit a sketch or a doodle, when you could take the time and finish the whole thing. why submit something you did in 10 minutes when you could spend another hour fixing the missed spots of color, cleaning up the edges of a selection, taking the time to find a better base image, etc. for those artists expecting a glowing review of their cut and paste, it's not going to happen, what can be said other than, "great job of taking someone elses work and combining with someone elses work." i would rather see something original from you rather than the 400th pic of christopher reeves body with the face of brendan fraser, matt bomer, paul walker, josh hartnett, or whoever is in the running for superman this week.
so there you go. the big thing is participate in the uir's...for as long as it took me to write this post i could have written the first uir for today. maybe save your No Topic post for a little later, whip up a quick uir, if even a partial one. don't forget, this site posts your work for many people to see, they provide the space for you, they provide the learning materials for you, they provide you a place to talk about the artwork as well.
