Hello all.

First, I'd like everyone to keep on lookout for the occasional Announcements that appear under your User CP link (top right) and above whatever forum of posts you're looking at.

There was an Annoucement Option in the old UBB threads version of software but since it was so corrupted, we were never able to utilize it. Occasionally, we will have something that is required reading for all and you never know, we might have Promotions for you or Contests.

Onward to Avatars:

Here's the deal on the avatar situation. vBulletin software has two options...Generic Avatars and Custom Avatars.

Generic Avatars is a tool for Webmasters should they wish to use Avatars as some ranking system tool and upload a couple of avatars themselves onto the server which as a sorta Post Count or Hierarchy type usage. You get what I'm saying, right? Generic means= webmaster controlled avatars.

Custom Avatars are what you guys choose just like the old UBB days. Here's the deal on UBB vs vBulletin which scares alot of webmasters. If the Webmaster chooses Custom Avatars for you, the user, to utilize....then there can be a downfall.

What is that, you ask? Well, the upload option.

I'm going to ask all of you to think about continuing to link to your own various photobuckets for your avatar needs. Sure, there is a Upload option but if everyone uploads avatars, it can cause serious lag in some unforseeable future.

Alot of webmasters make the avatar a contest. Take Comingsoon, for instance. They correspond the size of avatar you can have with the post count you have. In other words, those starting off will only be able to have 50 by 50 and a certain file size. When, you reach 3000 posts or something, the size moves up to 80 by 80 with increased file size. Keeps going to their limit of however much it is.

I'm not going to do that. You all can the avatars but like I say above, I would appreciate it if you continue using your own photobucket(or whatever site you use) link.

As you all also know, the rights to have a avatar depends on how you use it. Like the rules from UBB, no porn allowed for your avatar needs. If avatars are found offensive or you are abusing the right, we can now take them away from you. So please be cool with this option.

Stay within the rules and have fun.

Damn. I'm trying to use that pic of your penis as my avatar, but...it's too fucking BIG!

The thing that bugs me about this avi thing is I link from a photobucket, but the file I want to use is still to big. It's 82x82 pixels. Has to be 80x80, I size it down. It's the current one. But sizing everything oneself is a bit tedious. Is it possible, for linked avis, that there be no limit to their size but the maximum size they will display is 80x80? Like on the old forums.

I tried to link a 50x50 avatar (from image shack) into my user CP and it said the file was too big?! :angry

Why would there be a kb limit if you are linking it from another site (it doesnt take away bandwidth from this site)?

The kb limit is there because of the ability for some to upload avatars. Im looking into a way so ppl cant upload it to our servers and in so doing eliminate the need to worry about size limit.

Just letting you know.

Ah ok then.

If I was you why not just disallow any avatars to be uploaded to the server? People should have no problems linking avvys over to here anyways...

And I really like this emoticon: :angry (:D )

Yep, thats the issue that I'm looking into.

Vbulletin has two different versions of avatars. Generic and Custom. Generic avatars come equipped in the default version of the boards and those are just avatars that the webmaster creates to match up with post counts. A set of images that will appear under your name to correspond with your post counts. When I turned on Custom avatars, thats where this problem comes into play. Im looking for a way to have Custom avatars but only have them set so they can be linked instead of both linked and uploaded(the option is universal for both right now).

That is a pretty cool smiley. I think our Stylesheet Goddess, Monic, found it. :D

Actually, is there a feature that compresses images like on the last board? I've stuck with the current avatar for so long because I don't know how to compress other images I want (hell, it's actually the reason I used the current one in the first place).

It is possible to lower the weight of an image with Photoshop and its "save for the web" feature.

Is there any software that doesn't cost $700 that I can do it with?

I don't know another one. But if you want me to try it for you, email me the pictures.

Thanks, Mon. I'll get back to you once I pick the pics I want to keep as an option. Your offer is much appreciated.

Okay, I've went ahead and switched Custom Avatar permissions from 80 by 80 at 20000 bytes to:

100 by 100 at 50000 bytes.

I hope this helps out. The same rules apply for everyone's avatars. Keep the avatars clean. No porn or rated R material allowed. If you do this, your avatar rights will be revoked and your account may be revoked too.

Please continue using "linking" option for your own photobuckets or file hosting sites for any avatars.

Hope that helps you all out some.
