View Full Version : Design details of comic characters

WC

Following on from Dperceful's Archangel design details, I thought I'd start up a thread to cater for people who'd like to know particular design details of comic characters they are trying to recreate. Anyone who knows the answer to the questions can help out.

I'll start with one:

Did Mary Jane Watson, in her first appearance in Spider-Man #42 wear a black mini dress or was it a black top with trousers/jeans?

All help appreciated, and feel free to ask your own questions.

I'm pretty sure she had jeans on.

Yep, black top with jeans.

(I knew those _Essential Spider-Man_ volumes I never have time to reread would be useful for something some day... http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif)

I could scan in a couple panels if you want exact reference pics.

Cheers.

Dynamic Forces (I think) is going to/already has come out with a mini statue portraying the classic first appearance of MJ. I looked for it briefly on Google with no luck.

I have a question:

What color are Kyle Rayner's eyes? and does anyone know why, when he has his mask on, it's all white in the eye holes? Is this part of his mask, or like a side effect of his powers or what?

Thanks!

Why are any superhero's eyes white? http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif Anyways, I think his eyes are brown, but it seems most every DC character has blue eyes, so I suppose the odds are in favor of that. All this aside, don't the rings' effects make the wearer's eyes green? Or is that just GL on the Justice League cartoon?

According to a good many fan sites, Kyle's eyes are Hazel.

Yep. But according to the DC Website, they're dark green. Weird... Maybe he lost his (ret)contacts?

I'd guess DC's answer would probably be the more accurate one (at least right now), WWG.

Do you know what colour jeans she wore? Isn't Essential Spidey in B&W?

Is it the same colour jeans as in the statue which Zac is referring to? I think it might actually be produced by McFarlance toys not Dynamic Forces, but I could be wrong.

I think they were blue, and I'm not sure if the statue keeps that color or not. The only image I've seen of it was a few months ago and it was still being sculpted, so I'm not even sure it's out yet.

As far as who is making it, I thought I read it was being done by DF, but it's scuplted by Clay Moore, who runs MAC, so there's no telling.

well according to the marvel chronology project's scan of the offending panel from ASM #42.. black top blue jeans.. http://www.chronologyproject.com/w.htm the bust seems to be black top tan jeans.. http://www.monstersinmotion.com/anim/marybust1lg.jpg

Yeah, the Essentials are in B&W, but I have a couple colour shots too in various other comics.

Like Zac and lh said, they're blue in the original panels.

(Hey, hundredth post... That means I'm about 1/40 of the way to beating Zac. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif)

Thanks for the answers guys. Now I have another question which is baffling me. Does anyone know what exactly Viper/Madame Hydra looks like? Does she look like this
http://www.comics2film.com/DCG/DispArt.php3?f_id=4773&f_ssn=

or like this?: http://www.classicmarvel.com/cast/viper.htm

I'm pretty sure I've seen a version where she is wearing thigh-length dark green or black boots and not those green pants and short light green boots like in that second link. Can anyone verify whether there is a version like that and perhaps if you could find a picture, that would really help, as I can't seem to find one anywhere. Surely I can't have imagined that version I'm thinking of, because I even did a picture of Viper with Spider-Woman years ago, but now I'm not sure of the accuracy of that.

What!? Tan jeans? Blue jeans aren't suddenly out of style are they? If so then my and my all-blue-jeans wardrobe are skeerewed!

I'm reasonably sure she's worn both those costumes at one time or another, but I don't have too many comics with her unfortunately.

Oh, and Zac: I didn't even know they made tan jeans until now... As for "in your prime", I think you had, what, three and a half thousand posts when you changed your name? And you've certainly had at least a hundred since... I'm still a ways off of besting that, methinks.

I've just completed a manip featuring the Green Arrow family. My problem lies in that I created a new Speedy with the character Mia in the role. My problem is, I haven't been able to afford comics for the last year or so, so I don't know if Mia is still alive or around in GA anymore. Could someone tell me her status?

Thanks! That's really helpful. Now does anyone know what Firebird's backside looks like? Does that red bit which looks like red knickers go all the way round to the back and is it actually like knickers, or is it only on the front (where it joins that bird symbol)?

In case anyone is wondering why I'm asking all these questions, I'm currently trying to make custom action figures and I need to know the exact details of these characters.

Um, she is still around, but I think she got injured in the recent storyline (can't remember how).

Certainly not dead or gone. But she's not talking to Ollie at the mo.

Hope that helps!

(btw, I'm intrigued to see who you cast as GA)

Yes, that does help PK. Thanks. As for who I cast as Ollie, well, let's just say there are 24 good reasons for my choice.

I want to do an Iron Man manip. I am trying to figure how I should make his armor look because it changes all the time. I think I want to do my own version using a hybrid of his classic look and more recent armors.

As someone who's done a lot of Iron Man pictures, I personally prefer the classic Red and Gold because it is a simple yet elegant design which, when rendered properly can look extremely powerful. I'd say go with a combination, but avoid the over-complicated armours. They just look plain silly and unmemorable - I certainly wouldn't remember their design without a reference picture. They just look cluttered and as if they are trying too hard. As technology progresses, things should get minaturised and more streamlined, allowing for more asthetic appeal. There shouldn't be all this excess paraphernalia on the exterior like the most recent armour has.

wonder woman design questions

first skin

the model is tan.....i'm using the replace color tool to make it a more milky, cream colored skin....question is, is her skin more pale than tan?

breastplate

ugh this thing is a pain. i've looked at a variety of breastplate designs....but my real question is the bend on the plate. does it conform to each individual breast or is it curved over both? the bend will effect how the light bends on the metal, so that is primarily why i'm asking.

thanks ahead of time for the help.

She's always been portrayed with more pale skin, but I figure if she grew up on a sunny island, she would have a pretty nice tan. Then again, clay may not tan too well. I'd go with an even mix of both.

I think the plate has always curved over both and been flat/straight in front.

Just bumping this up to the top. I'm thinking of doing an X-Men Sentinels pic. But which is more classic? The 60s version with the original X-Men, or the one in the 1980s with the new X-Men, just before the Phoenix saga? The original is obviously easier to do, as everyone's costumes are virtually the same, but that could be quite boring too. Plus Iceman would only still be "Snowman", and I'd want to do a really showy ice effect, so I wouldn't get to do that with the 60s Mr Snowman. The new X-Men are more challenging (but probably more interesting) but I get the impression from the Marvels graphic novel that the 60s version is more remembered. Any opinions?

I'd say just do whichever one you feel would be more worthwhile. Judging from your comments here, I get the impression that'd be the one with the new X-Men. Besides, I'm not so sure the original's all that much more iconic... the new X-Men are, in a lot of ways, far better remembered than the originals... They were, after all, far more successful.
