Just finished reading this and thought it was awesome! I found it really interesting how Gaiman depicted ancient gods trying to exist in America, faced with being forgotten in favor of the new gods of media, money, etc. I read that it's been optioned to make a movie, I just hope they don't mess it up (but they probably will).

Make sure you read the sequel that just came out last year, Anansi Boys. Same universe, but entirely new cast of characters and a tone that's more humorous than "American Gods." I thoroughly enjoyed both books ... and I do hope they don't mess up the movie version.

Well, I thought I remembered reading about it on the Cinescape website, that's what prompted me to go out and read the book, but I can't find the article now. Hmmm....

Neither IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/) nor neilgaiman.com (http://www.neilgaiman.com/) make any mention of it. None that I could find, anyway.

I haven't heard of a movie adaptation (the last Gaiman movie adaptation I had heard about was Stardust), but I remember thinking as I finished the book that it would be very cool if done well but almost doomed to not be done the right way. I think it's inevitible that discussions of a movie will arise around this book.
I loved the book, though. Anansi Boys is on my list but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Oh I totally agree. Movie discussions are inevitable, but I don't know how they could possibly do it right, and do it well. I suppose if Neil wrote the script himself it'd be a big help, but who to direct? His buddy McKean? Who could do Shadow properly? Or Low Key?
Way too many question marks. It's become one of my favorite books, and I'd hate to see it get bastardized into a low quality film.
And for the record, Stardust is in production, being directed by Matthew Vaughn, and apparently De Niro, Pfeiffer, and Claire Danes were all cast. There's also an animated (thank god) adaptation of Coraline in the works, and I believe Dakota Fanning is starring there.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that I attended a reading by Neil (and somebody on these boards got a nifty signed graphic novel from it) in December, and he mentioned he'd like to do, and has ideas for another Shadow story in the not too distant future.
