View Full Version : No name brand UIR (14/06/2004)
I just couldn't be bothered coming up with a snazzy UIR title this time...
Supercindy1 by cmeza
Good costuming, but really grainy. And that's all you get, I can't be bothered with properly reviewing pieces without art notes.
Blood And Gore South Park Style. by RoadWolf
Fun piece. I really like Freddy's eyes, though both guys look good.
Penance by sensor girl
Very nice piece. The reds are great, though it'd be nice if there were a few highlights to break up their monotony. Her eyes are also great. I'd change the colour of the butterflies a bit to make them stick out a bit more, but that's me.
Genisis: Superman by Juvenilemike
Well, at least you got the right spelling on the poster itself... http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif Great piece, best of the lot by a country mile. Great layout, and I quite like the nice simple black background. Krypton looks great, very nice fireball there. I'd have added more of a glow around it, mind you. That would create a lot of light! Supes himself is very well done, gorgeous colours on the costume. The blues are really beautiful. I'd have added some details to the costuming, seams and wrinkles. Maybe they're there but got killed by the compression though, I dunno. Great piece overall.
F.a.k.k.2 by Vagabond1972
Cool piece, I like it. I think you oversmudged in spots, some of the linework just vanishes. I'm also not sure about the hair... her hairline is too curved, it makes it look like she's balding!
You Gotta Be Kidding Me! by LAUGHING BEAR
Good piece. I kinda wish you'd put some carriage returns into those art notes though, it's tough reading them in one huge block. Good costuming, good Frankensteining. His legs seem a bit big though. And I'm not sure you need all that background...
Red Son Animated by sickboy_ukuk
Cool piece, though I'd have put in a few highlights and shadows. You don't have to gradate them, which interferes with the animated look, just put in blocks of different colours where there should be highlights and shadows. Check out Albea's work to see what I mean. Another thing: his head seems kinda small, even given the Timmish style.
Magnus: Robot Fighter by Winterhawk
Nice work, as always. I couldn't access the big version for whatever reason, so the following comments apply to this one. Apologies if anything I bring up is a result of compression. Nice background. The robot's really cool. Nice costuming as well, I rather like the chainmail. I'd have added in some wrinkles though. His feet seem a touch too long, especially the near one. The main problem though is that neither Magnus nor the robot cast shadows! Still, a good piece overall, if not quite as good as some of your other work. But then, it's an early one, so that makes sense.
Supergirl by kevin newburn
I agree, it is one of your best! Awesome piece. Great pose, simple but sexy, and thus totally Supergirl. The hair's really well done as well. Favourite pic of the day! Pretty please, can I colour this?
New Universe Flash by Mshadow1023
Not bad. It's too blurry for my taste though. Yes, I realize the Kingdom Come Flash is supposed to be blurry, but there's still too much blur. It's okay, I guess, but not your best.
The Batman: Manga Style! by effektdmentality
What would happen if DC manga-ized its characters? Junkyard would have a heart attack, for one. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif Be that as it may... Cool design, nicely drawn. I like the cloak. Nice background story, a very cool Elseworlds. There's a few factual mistakes mind you -- the one that sticks out for me is that there was no way of the ronin. Ronin were samurai, so they simply followed the same code as other samurai, bushido. Still, that's just a minor nitpick from the historian in me. Very nice piece overall. A colour version would be cool.
Supergirl Undies by stillhbk
Nice piece, and a cool experiment. Great colours, particularly the gorgeous skin tones. Very nice blues as well. I like the seams, nice touch. I'm not sure why you couldn't do the skirt and cape though -- just draw the edges in black and it should match fine.
Juggernaut by motherchucker
Cool piece, nicely coloured. I like the shading in the skin tones. The metal could use a few more highlights.
The Slasher by digitized
Good piece, as always, though not your best -- I agree with Dan that your White Queen pic is. It's all rather blurry. The hair's not bad. The fur on his shoulder's really well done. The anatomy of his hand is sort of wonky, the thumb looks odd, as does the bend of the index finger.
Cyborg by siddhartha
I never was much of a fan of this storyline... even less so than I am of Superman in general, in fact. Still, this is a decent piece. Good Frankensteining, nice background. I'm not sure I like the head, it looks too much like its grinning. I think its a bit too big as well. The head's also a totally different look from the body, I think they should match more closely. The costuming is okay, but really flat, particularly the belt. Not your best really, though okay.
Black Cat by Electric_Chinchilla
Very nice piece, great work for a debut manip. The texture of the suit is nice, though I'd have added more shine. Nice wrinkles, really well done. Maybe a touch too sharp in spots, I'd have blended them in a bit more. The glove looks a bit, er, dirty. It might be beneficial to play around with the brightness a bit. The fur's kinda smudgy, though not at all bad. The hair's kind of faded looking, I think it could use some more shadow. Like I said though, very good work. I'm only nitpicking like this because the piece is at a sufficiently high level that all I can do is nitpick the details.

[b]supercindy1 by cmeza:[b/] I don’t know the first thing about photo manipulations, so I have my reservations when it comes down to critiquing your work. But based upon the opinion of merely an onlooker, I think the skirt is a little long and Cindy, would not be my top choice for Supergirl, but all things consider I think you did a good job.
[b]Blood and Gore South Park Style. by RoadWolf: [b/] LMAO That looks sweet. Nice job.
[b]Penance by sensor girl:[b/] Nice job. The model of the pic looks a little bit like Leelee Sobieski. I’m not a big fan of Generation X, but really like this piece. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
[b]Genisis: Superman by Juvenilemike:[b/] That looks sweet! Looks like the Kent’s are going to have to move soon, to another farm when that meteor hits. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
[b]F.A.K.K.2 by Vagabond1972[b/] I’m not familiar with the character, but art wise looks good. I like the “smudge” technic you used for the hair.
[b]You gotta be kidding me! by LAUGHING BEAR [b/] “Believe it or not! I’m walking on air!” Tehehehe. That brings back memories. Nice job, looks like you put a lot of effort into it. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
[b]red son animated by sickboy_ukuk:[b/] the similarities between your style for that particular piece and the artwork of the Justice League animated series, are very close (with the exception of the eyes). Good job.
[b] Magnus: Robot Fighter by Winterhawk: [b/] Wow! Outstanding performance! Love the background. Nice manipulation on Magnus too.
[b]supergirl by kevin newburn:[b/] I really like this. Nice technique, highly detailed and yet the simplistic ink work makes it looks sharp, crisp and clean. Reminds me of Todd Nauck’s work. My only beef with you is the size of her breasts. Makes her look a tad bit disproportionate to the rest of her body. But I guess many artist lean that way nowadays. Awesome job keep it up.
[b]New Universe Flash by Mshadow1023:[b/] Though I’m not so fond of the flash with the bedpan on his head, it looks good. Nice job.
[b] The Batman: Manga style! by effektdmentality:[b/] Nice design, and premise for the story. You should pitch it to DC, for their Elseworlds books.
[b]supergirl undies by stillhbk:[b/] Her torso looks a tad bit disproportionately (too long) and her butt looks too narrow. Nice job on the colors and the background.
[b]Juggernaut by motherchucker:[b/] Juggy, looks as big as sentinel, in this pic. It would be a nice idea for an X-Men cover if you only portrayed Juggy’s hand squeezing the life of the X-Men instead of the whole thing. The colors are ok. But the dark colors on juggernaut’s uniform kind of flatted the pic.
[b]The Slasher by digitized [b/] Good work I love this character. Nice work on the fur.
[b]Cyborg by siddhartha: [b/] Nice details on the cyborg-organic parts. But the head is too big for the body.
[b]Black Cat by Electric_Chinchilla: [b/] Nice work. Not familiar with the model. But she looks like she could pass for Black cat.

Thanks guys. I forgot to put my art notes in, but they're there now. I've got to get to the gym, but I'll be back for a uir later.

Supercindy1 by cmeza -- From what I can tell its a recolor of Cindy in a dress.. Very pixelated and the blues come off as very flat. Also If you were trying to create a two separate pieces look you didn't quite get there. The "belt" and break between the red and blue doesn't stand out enough to give the illusion of two separate pieces. It still looks like what I believe it is... a recolor of a sheath type dress.
Blood And Gore South Park Style. by RoadWolf -- LOL.. I love Freddy's eyes and seeing into Jason's ribcage. Very funny. Very cool.
Penance by sensor girl -- The recolor work on this is very nice..the reds are a tiny bit flat for my tastes especially around the nose/cheek area. And I agree with B that the orange of the butterflies almost gets lost in the red so perhaps a different color for them would have been a bit better. I have to say I really love the eyes on this. The deep shadows around them and the very cool glow you have going on in them really makes them stand out.
Genisis: Superman by Juvenilemike -- This was definately worth the wait to see. I love the whole thing.. The sun/meteor is really sweet and the composition as a whole is perfect. The only complaint I have on this one is that I would love to see Superman a bit bigger so we can better see the wonderful work you did on his costume. Gorgeous piece.
F.a.k.k.2 by Vagabond1972 -- Interesting technique but I think the smudging is overdone in a couple of places. You lose all definintion on the gun, gauntlet/glove and pants. It works best on the body and in the hair but I think the hair should angle a bit more towards the back unless there is a breeze blowing her hair upward.
You Gotta Be Kidding Me! by LAUGHING BEAR -- LOL... NICE!!! Really nice work on Tom and the "Hero" costume. The lighting on the two faces in the background - Charisma/Ashton- and the guy hailing the cab out a bit too much from the original lighting of the background though and I agree with B that perhaps a bit less of the background would focus the action better on Tom.
Red Son Animated by sickboy_ukuk -- Cool piece. I really like this style.. One minor quibble. The screen right forearm curves to the wrist while the screen right has a sharp angle.
Magnus: Robot Fighter by Winterhawk -- The chain mail came out wonderfully on this and I like the robot. And the background is great. I'd love to know where it came from -- Did you make it/ find it ?? -- The only thing I can see on this that I would change is the lack of cast shadows as B already mentioned.
Supergirl by kevin newburn -- I agree that this is one of your best pieces. I love everything about it. The pose the clean lines the posture, the boots. Everything. I would also like to ask your permission to perhaps color this.
New Universe Flash by Mshadow1023 -- Interesting concept but I think that there is such a thing as too much blur even for Kingdom Come. The blur is sooo heavy its impossible to make out much detail and the helmet/hat looks more like a halo.
The Batman: Manga Style! by effektdmentality -- Love the design on this. The pose on this is wonderful as well. And great detailed back story.
Supergirl Undies by stillhbk -- Cool concept. Really nice colors especially the hair and skin tones.
Juggernaut by motherchucker. -- Really nice perspective on the drawing but the colors are a bit flat overall. The metal needs a bit more shine and Juggernaut's costume is a bit flat. Also I would have liked a little bit of shading on the X-men even though they aren't the focus.
The Slasher by digitized -- The hair on this is well done but overall the piece as a whole is overly blurry. You can barely make out any detail in his face and torso and somehow his index finger looks as if it is bending the wrong way.
Cyborg by siddhartha -- Good work intergrating the cyborg and human parts but unfortunatly even before I read you art notes my first thought was the body looks a bit plastic. dperceful found a really great robot making tutorial http://www.worth1000.com/tutorial.asp?sid=161011 that might help for future reference.
Black Cat by Electric_Chinchilla -- I love your art notes on this... And this is really nice debut manip. The one minor quibble I have is the hair on her head ends up looking a bit flat and blocky but white hair is always difficult.

hmmm I've been slipping on my UIRs. here we go..
- supercindy1 by cmeza
ok I like that this is pixilated and grainy looking, makes it look a bit more realistic, the skirt looks real nice, the "s" across her chest is the weakest part. the angle's a bit wonky on it
- Blood and Gore by RoadWolf
stupid movie.... I mean when freddy is brought intot he real world jason should've squashed him.... ummm nice picture I like freddy better then jason though.
- Penance by sensor girl
I have no idea who this is, but it's a good looking pic. the butterflies look nice, but I think i'd have made them less read and more yellow. just to adda bit of contrast to the picture.
- Genesis: Superman by Juvenilemike
this looks really nice, superman looks great. the background not so much. instead of just the farm I think if you'd used an entire horizon shot it would've looked nicer.
- F.A.K.K.2 by Vagabond1972
great face, love the eyes. teh smudge effect looks awesome on the hair, it's a bit of an overdoo on the pants.
- You gotta be kidding me! by LAUGHING BEAR
this is great, love the idea and the costume.
- red son animated by sickboy_ukuk
good looking picture. only thing I can think of doing to crank it up is trying to vary the line thickness. I think it's the next step.
- Magnus: Robot Fighter by Winterhawk
good looking costume, and I love the robot parts strewn about. that background is great too.
- supergirl by me ; )
yeah I know her breasts are a bit big, it's cause this started out as a picture of Ant who has a way bigger rack. thanks for the compliments guys. anyone who wants to color this is more then welcome.
- New Universe Flash by Mshadow1023
ok I like this the costume looks like its cool, but it's so blurry I'm jonzing for some details.
- The Batman by effektdmentality
I like this design a bunch. I think to give it a bigger manga look you could exagerate the sleeves and pants even more.
- supergirl undies by stillhbk
I like the coloring abit better then the original drawing I think. actually now that I look at it I think it's the "inking" I use quotes cause I know its a manip of a drawing. the lines are to blocky and uniform, it works agains the coloring
- Juggernaut by motherchucker
the golds look very nice, the hands not as much. I think the thing that sticks out the most is that the fingernails are the same color as the hands.
- The Slasher by digitized
this is a cool picture, it almost looks like its moving. good manip
- Cyborg by siddhartha
I like, this is a pretty good job of frankensteining. I don't quite think everything fits together right, but you did a good job with the cut and paste.
- Black Cat by Electric_Chinchilla
this is pretty good, I really like her glove. the costume textures look real nice too.

Soryr it's so late.
What the others have said about the grain should be taken into account. There's several different types of picture, but they can usually be categorized as one of the following:
Pin-Up: A shot showing the casting choice, with the costume in place. The subject is aware and posing for the photo.
Action: Often a scene, showing the characters as though the picture was taken by a person on site. A candid shot.
Poster: This is usually a collage, including both of the two above with text and layout frills.
Your picture falls into both of the first two. Because of the grain and the background the effect of a candid shot is given, because of the pose the pinup affect is there. Whilst overlap between the three is allright, here I think it causes some problems. If you had gone all out and added depth to the belt, and maybe the sleeves, then the candid pinup might have been more believable. As it is though the picture doesn't present your abilities too well. I can see you've got a good eye; the belt flows well, and the 's' is well position. Although I think maybe cut and pasted? But you need to take more time. You're not done when the costume's on. You've got to add the small details and make it look pretty or gritty, but make sure that either way it's a choice not a byproduct. I look forward to bigger and better things. However, I will not be UIR'ing anymore of your pictures until there are some adequate art notes.
Blood and Gore South Park Style.
Good work, well in keeping with the south park style, without overdoing things. There's just enough detail, and the characters of the two really come through. Freddy's spots are a bit much though http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
by sensor girl
Wow, this is a really vivid picture. Reading through what the others have to say, I agree that the nose is a litle flat, not much just a little. Using a lasso with maybe 10 feather and decreasing the brightness by 5 to 15 would bring it the features out more and echo the sharpness of the eyes. Go around the cheeks and nose. My only problem with the butterflies is their pitcure tube look. They seem to be the same butterfly at different angels and sizes. I'm trying to think of a way of changing that; different colours, depth of focus blur. But the only *real* option for me, would be to redo them or find alternatives. The picture looks great, but the butterflies give it an ameteurish touch that you don't deserve or need. Whilst I like how you've framed it I'd be tempted to play around a bit. I'd like to see the same picture on a larger canvas with the face centered at the bottom. Maybe 1and 3/4 the current height, and 2 and 1/4 the current width. The dominating nature of the reds might be heightened by the isolation that the black would give on all sides. I'd also consider darkening her lips a lot. Another idea for the butterflies just came to me. Have one in shot, and then the shadows of the others out of the scene. Just things to try and mess about with. Great job.
ME!!! I'll address your awesome, and gracious comments in a seperate post
At first I thought this might have been a photo sent through a filter, so your proportions are amazing. I'm still finding it hard to believe that the body wasn't done seperatly from the gun armor and pants. The hair looks alright with the smudge, as does the top and shoulder, however it wrecks the fun and hand.
You gotta be kidding me!
by LAUGHING BEAR
Wow, this almost makes up for everyone elses lack of art notes, ever. You might want to structure them a little better next time http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
Clark: Well done. It looks good, the leg on our left, has a funny shadow on it though which spoils it a bit, but the cape flows nicely, and the rest of the costuming is solid.
The rest seems really forced tho. I know, I know, it's a bit of fun right? But that doesn't mean it can't be well executed. Not that this is poorly executed, just that it could have been better. The bodies of the two in the background aren't dark enough to fit them in and thus they look cut and pasted. Compare the shadowing on clark to the shadowing on them (and the crowd) and you'll see that the shadows on clark are markedly darker than those on the others. Clark has the right levels, so adjust the others via highlight/midtone/shadows. That should help the heads to fit in also. Finally you might want to add their shadows on the ground.
All in all it's an okay picture, but I think if you'd used some of techniques you'd learnt in making Clark on the others, rahter than rushing the joke, the payoff would've been much greater. As it is, the (small) flaws in the picture distract from the punchline too much.
ps just saw you're doing this on GIMP. Wow, I'm impressed, how easy is that, I tried it a few times and got frustrated?
red son animated
A great take on the Bruce Tim style. It looks good, the face is well structured and everything is well proportioned. You've also managed to port the character across from the comic well. That said there are a few minor flaws, his hands could use some work and his nipples jagged. I also wonder about the blue, I would have been tempted to give his boots a red stripe, however that's a design decision and is purely personal prefrence. Good work.
Magnus: Robot Fighter
I'm basing this on the larger version. There was something I couldn't quite put my finger on for some time that didnt' quite work with this. I eventually worked out it was the lack of floor shadows, as others have mentioned here. They not only make magnus and the metal seem out of place, but the lack of shadows being cast by the metal onto the metal, makes it seem like small objects that have been resized. This is becuase of the flash. On a large object it would be hard for the flash to reach all the nooks and crannies but here every part is illuminated. That said, I love the various robots included.
The work on Magnus is great, although there's a strange bump in his right (our left) foot. The chainmail is really well done, and I'd love to see a tutorial on how you did it. The fold as it passes between legs is great. I also love the sublte shadows on the shoulder. Small touches make the picture. Not your best but still good.
by kevin newburn
This is a perfect example of great pencil work. The lines are clean and crisp. The character is well draw,n, in terms of proportion and pose. There is emotion and character behind the image. It's brilliant. I really don't have anything bad to say. I prefer supergirl with smaller breasts, and consequently a smaller 's' (no 'a' there bucko ;P), but that's just me. My favourite picture of the update! I just read the other comments and can really see the similairity to Todd's work. You should pass it on to him, he's a great guy.
Okay, I'm going to skip a few now, because I need food, and just do those that took the time to review me. Because you guys rock. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/wink.gif
I agree with the others that this is super blurred, but I don't think that in itself is a bad thing. It reminds me of those pictures you'd get in the 80's specifically with Visionairies toys. The holograms and the like. I think if you'd sharpened the focus on the head then the image would be given a lot more force and power. The hair on the (our) left shoulder is great, and possibly the best example I've seen in the dcg. The hair on the right looks a little disconnected tho. I think that's mainly due to the gap where it would have been expected to follow round the shoulder at the bottom.
Hair is hard to do, and you did really well, only getting stuck at the head. My advice would be to start with a photo of hair you like and try use that as a base, adding your own extensions as you go.
Otherwise, everything is good. I'd add a background, and maybe add some colour to the white highlight on the chest. Also, i think the eyes look a little too much like alien eyes, so i'd bring them in (horizontally). I know it seems like I think there's a lot wrong with the pict, but that's not true. Well... there are a few changes I'd make but that doesn't mean that I don't like the picture, or that I think it sucks. Just that it holds a lot of potential and with a little more work (and some helpfull tips) it could be right up there.
Lol, I love the disclaimer. There's a few things that I'll put down to compression, such as the blending into the shadow. Okay, first I'm going to say it's great. Really well done. The costuming is great, I know how hard it can be to do black costumes and the folds and fur both work perfectly.
That said there are some things you might want to consider. First off; the glove. It looks as though you did a negative image and then played around with the saturation. It's good, but the fingernails, and the shadowing on top give it away. Also, there's a weird plating effect that might've been created because of the viens. Smoothing this over would help remove any doubt. The slow disappearence into the fur is superb btw. Others have mentioned the hair. It does look a little off, although it takes inspection to pick up. White hair is easily one of the hardest things to do well. I've had to do it four or five times now and still don't feel comfortable with my efforts. I think the key is to not be afraid of adding stark dark shadows. You've got the low lights but now you need to go all out for those super dark shadows. Also, I'd suggest thickening the mask a little.
Okay and the last thing is the background. You've done a great job creating the character, but ruined it (somewhat) with the background. Add a lamp post, a support beam, anything but put her outside. You could even have her snuglling up to Wilson Fisk.
It's a good picture, but it's wasted a little by not changing the background.
Okay that's all from me.
