View Full Version : *GASP* How SinistUIR! (17/06/2004)
Full UIR later (the server is just not cooperating!), but I just had to say that it's great to finally see Sinister's lab up! Awesome piece, Adam, I do indeed think your best to date. I'm glad my suggestions were of use. And anyone who hasn't checked out the full pic, do so! The 90k version isn't a patch on the real thing...

When someone is working on a piece for over a year, and better yet, the image he creates is actually fantastic, he needs all the love we can afford to give. So, let my add a little chunk of my heart to the evergrowing pile of praises. Go Adam!

The cows are coming.....head my warning! But, until then, here's a UIR.
Mucus Tick by Winterhawk -YES!!! I loved that episode! Your right tho, the head does look taller. But nice mucas work on this!
Nucleargirl by jumpingjahosaphatyehaw -Oh dear, not this lame character again...doesn't Lex know not to mess with clones by now... Watch when you recolor to have a smoother edges.
Independant Project: Martyr (photoshop Draft 1) by MondoDaMidget - Weird...I like it.
Gambit2 by show_u_who_i_am -I didn't know Gambit's eye's glowed white....?
Elektra-red Outfit 2 by benpixen -It's better then the first one, but you lots the definition between the...umm...two large bulbus thingies on her chest...
Doomsday by siddhartha -This one is more then slightly desturbing on alot of levels....
Kate Bosworth As Invisible Girl by xxxNightwingxxx -Interestng effect...
Carmen Electra As Jet Girl by Jab -Nicely done, I especially like the jet pack.
The Defenders! by M -Great casting job! Especially on Jason Scott Lee as Namor. I would have never thought of that one.
I Dream Of Lindsay by Ed Hopkins - Who doesn't dream of Lindsay? Well, besides straight girls, and people that just don't like her... Nicely frankensteined.
Sinister's Laboratory by Essex -That's a cow! Sinister is cloning cows! I knew it! He turly is sinister! I should have never given him my secret vial of cow DNA...oh...wait...that vial doesn't say Cow...it says Creed...hehe...ummm...boy do I feel awkward now...good job on the manip...I think I'll go away now...

Thanks a lot guys for all the really nice comments. I really appreciate it!! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
It's only fair that I do a UIR myself today!
Superclaudia: Good....but exactly like all the others you've done. Frankly, I'm bored by now. Anyway, you've done some really nice work in some areas. The cape looks great and the S is perfect. But when it comes to her blue costume, it seems a little too...easy. I think some higher concentration shadows and some material folds and seams would do wonders. Nice work though.
Vertigo: Mmm....alright, but nothing special. You've done much better. I don't have much to say that you probably don't already know, but I will suggest one thing. When you recolour lips or eyebrows, don't use such a harsh brush throughout. The outlines shouldn't be so stark, because then those features stick out much more than her other facial features.
Mucus Tick: Really great subject! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif Good to see a pic like this in the gallery. The effect you used is very effective and the shade of green is perfect. I think what the figure needs though is some more lighting. It seems pretty generic, but the time of day depicted in the background suggests that the lighting would be much harsher on the left side of the image. Actually, I think interaction between background and figure is one thing you need to work on next. You're a great manipper and that'd be a good challenge for you (though you already started in the Magnus pic). In this pic, for example, the angle of the background doesn't match the Tick at all. The photo seems to be taken from a slight bird's eye view, but the figure is on a straight angle. It makes the background seem like an after-though. Just something to consider in future images. This one is still very great.
Wow...this UIR is taking me longer than anticipated. I babble on quite a bit. I think I'll have to review only some images today.
Jet Girl: This is quite good. The costume is done very well and the jet pack fits in well (though I wonder what its source is, honestly). The background could use some retouching, or perhaps a new background altogether would be best. That might raise this image from a simple pinup to something a little bit more exciting.
The Dream King: I REALLY like the ambiguity of this image. It is both abstract and not...depending on how you look at it. I like it a lot.
Thanks again everyone!

Superclaudia2 by cmeza- This is a suggestion, rather than a criteque: Smudging out her cleavage would have done wonders.
Vertigo by sensor girl- This is actually pretty good. The waist looks a little messy, but no big.
Mucus Tick by Winterhawk- Wow. You don't see a lot of "Tick" here. Good piece, and extra points for obscurity.
X-men by motherchucker- Nice coloring.
Nucleargirl by jumpingjahosaphatyehaw- Hmm. Pretty good, but the quality of the different parts don't match. The cape vs the arms, for instance.
Independant Project: Martyr (photoshop Draft 1) by MondoDaMidget- Whoa. This is new. I'm curious to see where this goes.
Gambit2 by show_u_who_i_am- Nice as a piece, but the charicter itself just doesn't strike me as any kind of Gambit. That is to say, he's clean cut, serious, with flowy energy, and a rather fancy costume.
Elektra-red Outfit 2 by benpixen- Actually pretty good. It's a little messy near the feet, though.
Doomsday by siddhartha- Interesting movieazation of Doomy.
Kate Bosworth As Invisible Girl by xxxNightwingxxx- Nice use of a photo effect.
Carmen Electra As Jet Girl by Jab- This is the best done costume of the day. Thumbs up.
The Defenders! by M- Fun piece. Nice casting choices. Man, it still gets me how much Pierce looks like a young Alex Trabeck.
I Dream Of Lindsay by Ed Hopkins- I'll be honest here. I thought the original "I dream of Genie" was a sick piece of work, but this is in a new evel of bad taste. As a consolation, it was a well- frankenstiened piece of bad taste.
The System Pg.6 by master caster- Nice illustrations. You've got a good style.
The Dream King by avgs- This may be my favorite of the day. Good job.
Sinister's Laboratory by Essex- Nice piece. Well Worth the wait.
UIRing as promised. Better late than never!
Superclaudia2 by cmeza
Like Essex said, it's really good but the same as all your other pieces. The cape's nice but a bit blurry, the costume is obviously just a colour change and could use some details.
Vertigo by sensor girl
No, I'm afraid it isn't really your best. The costuming badly lacks depth, it needs a lot more shading. The belt also looks rather flat and painty. I agree with Essex about the lips and eyebrows.
Mucus Tick by Winterhawk
It is indeed cool to see a pic of this character. Very good piece, as always, though not your best. The mucus effect / costuming is awesome. It looks really, really good. I think a bit too much detail is lost in the hands though. The head, as you say, is very oddly shaped. Again though, a damn fine piece. That mucus effect is, once again, perfect.
X-men by motherchucker
Good colouring, as usual. This is a bit small though, some of the details are difficult to make out -- a bigger version would be nice. I think your colours could generally use a bit more shading, they have a tendency towards flatness. I'd dodge and burn a bit to make them more lively. Collosus' metal, for example, could use a bit more shine.
Nucleargirl by jumpingjahosaphatyehaw
Pretty good. This is a definite improvement on your first piece. I have two main problems: first, virtually everything you've retouched in some way (ie, other than the face, belt and shoulderpad) is really, really blurry. There's some very ugly edges here... Second, the colours are really flat. This is especially true of the blacks, but also applies to the golds. Some good use of dodge and burn would easily clear up that problem. A proper background might also be nice.
Independant Project: Martyr (photoshop Draft 1) by MondoDaMidget
It's not bad or anything, but it really means nothing without some glimmer of the back story. It seems well done, though I dunno if you did anything other than cut-n-pastes and colour changes.
Elektra-red Outfit 2 by benpixen
Pretty good piece. More detailed art notes might be of help. The costuming's okay, but really flat. More dodge & burn please! There's a hint of shading, but there should be a good deal more. This badly needs highlights, in particular. Bits are also a bit blurry. Picture quality varies notably, the bg and costuming both being blurrier (and the former, grainier) than the character.
Doomsday by siddhartha
It's okay. Cool redesign. The lighting varies rather drastically between different bits, mostly obviously between the teeth and everything else. The eyes are also oddly lit in comparison to the rest, and they should be more angled. The most obvious problem, though, is the teeth: there's no anatomical concessions to them at all in the jaw area, they're just pasted on. It doesn't look particularly real, alas.
Kate Bosworth As Invisible Girl by xxxNightwingxxx
I like Theron for the role, she's got the right look. Plus, as amply shown in Monster, she can act! As for the piece... Interesting invisibility effect. I don't think it entirely works, simply because she isn't actually, y'know, invisible anywhere. It might work as a transition, I think. It's not the way I'd do it, but then I'm not the one doing it. The costuming is otherwise rather flat and blurry, with messy edges. It could use some good old fashioned dodging and burning.
Carmen Electra As Jet Girl by Jab
Indeed, this is a good piece. Very nice costuming, good colours and textures. Some nice wrinkles and seams as well. I think the yellows could use a bit more shading though, they seem a lot brighter and also less detailed (sorta blurrier) than the red glove and (moreso) the non-manipped parts and the jetpack. The jetpack is indeed very nice, it'd be cool to know where you got it, as Essex said.
The Defenders! by M
Good work, especially for Paint, but not your best. The lighting and picture quality don't even remotely match. The faces, etc need to be cartoonier to match the costumes. I'm not particularly fond of Surfer here -- he's a very flat grey, and badly needs some shine. The best advice I can provide though, is to get better software! I'd love to see what you can do with something more complex than Paint...
I Dream Of Lindsay by Ed Hopkins
It's nice to see some new work from you! Good piece, as always. I'm not huge fan of the original series either, but that's me. This is undoubtedly well done. Well frankensteined, and good job matching the colours, though the head seems a touch brighter than the rest, possibly because there's more highlights. Good job as well adding the reflections on the bottle (nice touch!), as well as the very nice genie effect. I'd have done another layer in front of her though, to have it all around her rather than just behind her.
The System Pg.6 by master caster
As always, good work. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're a fine artist. I'd love to see an inked & coloured version of this series. This is another good page, with everything very nicely drawn. The lady's neck in the last panel seems kinda odd, I think the angle it's drawn at might be a bit too severe for the perspective of the shot. Great overall use of perspective on all the panels, though.
The Dream King by avgs
Good piece, definitely the better of the two. Very cool abstracty look, with just enough detail to define the character without losing the style of the piece. It's just really, really cool. Very artistic piece, more obviously artsy than most of the work in the gallery. Thumbs up!
Sinister's Laboratory by Essex
Favourite pic of the day, as though there was any doubt. This is simply amazing work... great details everywhere, especially the eyeballs and the corpse in general. Great costuming on yourself -- the texture of the costume is wonderfull -- and also superb work doing the aging and adding the beard. Great work on Rare01 and "Emma." Bishop looks particularly good, because of the lighting. The whole background is amazing, I can't even begin to imagine the patience it must have taken to do all the wires, etc from scratch! I don't think I'd ever try to do a background in anything other than 3D (though if I ever got Photoshop, I'd probably be far more likely to try!). The lighting on the background is absolutely gorgeous... beautifully done. Great work on the Poser bits, great poses and great post production. I honestly couldn't tell they were Posered until I saw the mention of it in your art notes -- this despite the amount of time I spent poring over this piece for suggestions. So to recap: amazing work, my friend. Amazing work, well worth the wait and I do indeed think your best piece to date. Two thumbs way, way, way up!

got to give praise to essex. i've been absent due to a forearm muscle tear.....my typing is a litle tweaky because of it, but i have to say amazing work by essex. as a photoshop user i have to say it's amazing to see a scene like this built from scratch, this image is a tutorial in itself. i love looking at it and breaking it down element by element. of course essex is a brilliant artist and photoshop only allows him to bring his art to new levels.
truly a great piece....i have a feeling we will be seeing it again in november http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif .
good job essex, a worthy addition to you gallery.
