dperceful has come through for us again! Dan has written a very good tutorial on creating metal objects in Photoshop. It should be very informative for a lot of people.
Enjoy!

I proofread this a while back, and I can tell everyone that it's great! Simple but effective, and very useful for those (such as myself) that have somehow never gotten around to playing around with metal. I've actually already used this tutorial for a few accessories in my piece for the Heromorph crossover.
Great work, Dan!

Thanks for the kind words. It is by no means "THE" way to create metal...just one way to do it. I like how it gives the metal a slight Alex Ross watercolor look to it. For as long as I've been using Photoshop and looking at tutorials for it, I have never seen metal done this way. I hope this is an original and useful tutorial for all. If you have any questions about this tutorial or a tutorial request for me you can post here or email me at dperceful@yahoo.com

As soon as I figure out how to do these effects on Picture It, I'm starting on a Metal Men piece. Thanks, Dperceful!

JOEL- I guess they're trying to say that if we're born, and then we die, then there's lots of padding in between.

just take the bare esentials and transfer it. it's nothing more than a grey template with some highlights and shadows. the coloring process will be different....but again, just break it down to the bare bones.

thanks welsh. right now i have nothing planned other than a complete costuming tutorial. i have to get excited about it before i do anything with it....right now i'm just kinda zapped out artistically. i'm also open to tutorial requests...a lot of people wanted metal...so i did it. a lot of people wanted a complete costume tutorial...so that's my next one before the end of the year. i just hope everyone keeps in mind...these are just one way to do these effects. there are other ways to do metal, energy, blood, etc. again, thanks for the kind words.

dperceful is right about the pen tool. Its best thing to make stuff from scratch.

it is...but god i hated learning that damn tool. my students hate it too, i have at least passed that on to them.
but seriously, it's a very useful tool, especially for creating objects.

The pen tool is indeed worth any trouble it may cause to learn it. I don't even use the lasso selection anymore. It's all pen tool for me. But its uses go far beyond just creating shapes and lines, of course. The ability to stroke a path with any of the other retouching tools is one of the most useful features in PS, in my opinion.
