I mean of course American Idol is rigged. Everything you see on the goddam tube is fake! I don't understand this fixation people have with "reality" shows. It's all so depressing, the American public increasingly gets their viewing rocks off seeing ordinary people humiliated and crushed. How pathetic.

It is the sign of a society that has lost it's moral fibre.

Not to mention it's ability to think.

And by way of a tangent, I should admit right here and now that when I was a lad, I used to have sexual fantasies about Paula Abdul. There, I said it.

Then it was Nia Peebles for awhile.

But then, that's neither here nor there.

If people are willing, yes even eager, to humiliate themselves on TV, and others find some form of pleasure in watching this happen, may be a sign of a decline in moral fiber. But it also may be an example of how freedom really works. Our social structure is such that even the lowest common denominator gets its day in the sun. It is just a fad, and 10 years from now we will have moved on. True freedom is sort of like sampling everything at a smorgaasbord. Some things taste like crap, but some are really good!

Man, I shudder to think about what might be considered entertainment ten or twenty years from now. Remember that Star Trek episode "Breads and Circuses," where they had Roman gladiatorial contests on live television? Who's to say that won't happen? They'll take convicted criminals and put them in a ring up against detainees from Gitmo. Lots of blood for the kiddies!

And the product placement! Oh, the product placement.

Sick. Yet disturbingly plausible.

The only thing that stopped me from killing myself after finding this out, was the knowledge that professional wrestling was still real.

I've thought along those lines as well, but go back through history and follow the pattern of human social development. Reality TV doesn't really represent a trend leading towards televised death, what it does represent is a need for people to get attention, and for others to boost their self esteem by vicariously witnessing the type of embarassment they feel about themselves in their day to day lives. All of us are under so much pressure to conform to some idealized standard as perpetrated by TV and advertising, as well as by corporations and general societal pressures that are insidious and omnipresent without being overt.

It is a tangled web we have weaved with our "freedom" in this country, one that is actually leading us towards being less free, I'm afraid.

I think some have forgotten that with freedom comes responsibility. We seem to have been forgetting the "responsibility" part without blinking.

Actually, I would have liked to get on Branson's Rebel Billionaire, if it had lasted.

Meaning, of course, that I am no better than the people I just condemned.
